Did you guys know that Lucus genuinely thinks the 'new' puppet Yoda that was originally in TPM pre the Blu-Ray was 'better' than the puppet in ESB and ROTJ...

he says as such in the From Puppets To Pixels documentary.

He thinks that the only reason people hated the puppet in TPM was because it looked too different, but in Georges' mind it was objectively 'better'. I kid you not.

Here is the doco in which he says it:

It's pretty obvious that the director of American Graffiti and creator (sort of) of Star Wars and a little bit of Indiana Jones is no longer with us.

Around the 21:40 mark, they don't even know how old Yoda is
The one guy said 800, and George agreed. The creator doesn't even remember Yoda is 900 in ROTJ.

He did fix the vaseline effect under Luke's land speeder, and the edging around the ships during the Hoth scenes. Inside the cockpit, there used to be some lines of blue screen around the borders of the windows. Actually Empire seems to benefit the most from the touch ups. I also like the Emporer and the added windows inside Cloud City. If the others were small things that made sense, I wouldn't mind so much.

Regarding Chris Gould's changes articles over on DVDActive, can anyone help identify his sources? He has two sources of the Special Editions of the Original Trilogy (prior to Blu-ray), with one seeming to be theatrical but unidentified, and only identifying one as being 2004 DVD, and I think he had some other sources of the Prequel Trilogy as well. I tried emailing the guy, but no reply. Annoys me when people don't list sources. I guess maybe they're cams, and that's why they're not cited? They seem too good for cams though, and makes no sense to compare color of a cam to a DVD.

I don't know much about the review you're thinking of, but the 1997 Special Editions came out on LaserDisc. The picture (and digital surround sound) quality were quite good and one of the better LaserDisc transfers I've seen. So that may be what he used as a source in a comparison. Although that's just a guess.

Disclord on the LDDB page for the SW Special Edition noted it best (although now it seems the aspect ratio on this release had issues):

Quote:
For unknown reasons - and making a mockery of the THX LD programs so-called "standards" - the Special Edition transfers in this box set have incorrect aspect ratios. Star Wars is only 2.21:1, instead of the correct Panavision ratio of 2.39:1, while Empire and Jedi's aspect ratios are both 2.28:1 - better than Star Wars, but still short of the original Panavision framing.

In addition to being the very last release of the original three Star Wars films on LD, this LaserDisc set is the only home video release to present the Special Editions of all three films with the same picture and discrete digital soundtracks used for the theatrical releases. All later editions on DVD and Blu-ray are altered to various degrees and don't represent the theatrical prints.

As a technical side-note, these are the only LaserDisc's of the Star Wars films to be encoded with Faroudja Lab's Super NTSC process which produces greater color resolution, reduces chroma noise and eliminates most of NTSC's artifacts such as dot crawl and flickering rainbows on closely spaced diagonal lines. While Super NTSC produces improved picture quality with all types of comb filters, when a Super NTSC LaserDisc is decoded with an advanced Motion Adaptive 3D comb filter, color resolution of up to 160 lines horizontally and 480 lines vertically with no loss of vertical, horizontal or diagonal luminance resolution is possible.

I think that I've made peace with the Star Wars special editions. The added windows in Cloud City is pretty nice. With that being said I'd still absolutely love to have the theatrical versions of the original trilogy on Blu-ray. Packerfan75 that sure is an interesting avatar picture!

Default Blu Ray issues

a few years ago I picked up a used set of the Original Trilogy on Blu Ray.
When trying to watch them, subtitles repeatedly pop up for the Audio Commentary, despite the the subtitles being turned off, as well as a Camera Icon showing up off and on.

Is this an issue that others have experienced, or is this a defect of these particulars discs, and caused the original owner to sell it in the first place?

Some players had issues with Fox discs around that time. Player needed a firmware update, probably.

Yeah those issues used to occur with my Fox DVDs as well as some Paramount. I remember random subtitles popping up on my Indiana Jones DVDs. Very strange.

Well, with the news that Ep VIII has been pushed back to December 2017 that leaves summer wide open for a marketing assault for the 40th anniversary of Star Wars.

I previously speculated that following the 1997 anniversary could still work (theatrical release at the end of January, home video versions to follow in the summer) but now that there's a full year between Rogue One and Ep VIII I don't think accusations of "burnout" really apply any more, so why not bang out the restored Star Wars to select theaters in May 2017 with home video versions in time for the holidays?

Yeah that's a good point. I don't wanna build up anticipation in case it doesn't happen, but the stars seem to be aligning....

This is pretty funny, and makes the prequels somewhat bearable.

One new movie every year for the foreseeable future? Still seems like it's heading into burnout territory...

Pirates 5 has been moved to May 2017, but yeah, 2017 seems like the sweet spot for a new home video release to promote Episode VIII.
