Just an observation:

Circle of SW Life.

When Disney is good and ready. I am sure they have already planned it out.

Someone needs to put a fire under their ass so they'd hurry up. I'm getting tired of waiting.

Absolutely right, it just decides "oh, we'd better have Finn leave now" and "oh, we'd better turn on Rey's powers now" and it just doesn't flow well at all. Some of the stuff in there was obviously reshot later and that's indicative to me of how they struggled to make that scene work. It's damned near a miracle that the movie works at all, given the lack of time they had to throw the script together.

The opening crawl didn't need to mention Obi-Wan. We met him the same time as Luke. We heard about him a little before we met him, but then we knew a lot about him right from his own mouth.

I put a question mark next to 30 years, because I don't know how many years Luke has been missing, nor how many years this new empire has been gaining power. One would think that it would have been around the same time as Luke leaving. Otherwise he would have gone and stopped it right at the begining of rumours of a new empire.

We only needed a brief one line thing about Luke being missing. We didn't need to know in the crawl that people were looking for him, that was the first (roughly) damned line in the movie.

The opening crawl from ANH makes no mention of Obi Wan, or what a Jedi is or what happened to all the Jedi, how the rebellion came about in the twenty years since the formation of the Empire, or how that came about . We got no back-story.

The crawl in TFA serves the same purpose. Luke is the Maguffin (although he of course means more than that to the fans). We know the resistance is looking for Luke. We know the FO are out to stop them. We are introduced to Kylo Ren who is supposed to be doing that job for them, but we slowly learn that he is after Luke himself.

I can't look at Leia's hair in TFA and not immediately get overwhelmed with imagery of Mars Attacks! popping into mind.

No. A Jedi did not just pop up out of nowhere.
The earliest force users got together to meditate and use the force for barely anything. this happened for a long time.
Then, a few got sick of having some sort of power and not knowing their extant, so they broke off and formed a new faction. They tested their abilities, the trained themselves, they discovered, through time, what they could and could not do.

Rey was handed a lightsaber and gained all those abilites at that moment.
As it stands, with what little info was given in the movie, THAT was her training. Not that she had any when she was a kid.

That is the big issue.

This movie told us nothing, and only gave more questions.
The problem is that it was made to be part of a series/trilogy and not a stand-alone.

Had they acted like it was going to be a stand-alone, even though they and we knew there would be more, it could have been so much better.

Well you could say the same about Vader, so Lucas made the prequels to answer these questions.

Besides, Leia says Snoke seduced him to the Dark Side when she's discussing Kylo with Han.

You know how with Blade Runner, WB put all the various cuts into the Blu-ray 30th anniversary set? Wouldn't it be cool if Disney did that same thing with Star Wars? You could have the original 1977/1980/1983 theatrical cuts, the 1980 VHS cut of the first movie that added the "A New Hope" title, the 1997 Special Edition theatrical cuts, the 2004 DVD cuts, and the 2011 Blu-ray cuts. All cuts in glorious 4K UltraHD as well as 1080p HD.

Absolutely right. But then the original Star Wars didn't skimp on other world-building details like what the current political situation was ("how will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?"). When stuff like Vader's past was put out there it was a tantalising teaser of what had gone before, but Obi-Wan's bit to Luke also did an absolutely perfect job of succinctly summing up the state of the galaxy and what had happened to the Jedi. But there's no such "Obi-Wan" moment in this film, no discussion of the state of play politically, and that's partly what pisses me off about it: it's like nothing has changed in 30 years. So my questions about Kylo are just lumped onto the huge pile marked "UNANSWERED TFA QUESTIONS WOT GEOFF HAS".

Double standards, yeah yeah, I know the drill. But whaddayagonnado? You'll need a National Movie Double Standards Amnesty Day if you're gonna get through the maddeningly mercurial nature of other people's crazy minds.

Obi-Wan: "Vader/Anakin was seduced by the dark side. That was more than enough."

No reason was even given for why Kylo went bad.

Probably like 500 pages or so back, I saw a member make a breakdown of each of the movies. It looked to be really well thought out.
