I don't know stvn. My 7 year old remembers stuff from when he was a baby that freaks us out. He actually told us over the weekend that he remembers me before his mom. Now keep in mind, she had a c section and didn't get to see him until they brought her back to the room. Me, I was there the whole time. So who knows how that stuff works

So first it's too Star Wars, and now it's not enough! Make up your minds, dammit!

Seriously though, I mostly agree about that sequence, plus its the one part of the movie that kind of looked like a modern CGI cartoony sequence and not like the retro classic Star Wars feel.

You know what I did like at that part, though? When Han Solo shoves that pirate in the creature's mouth to distract it while he runs. It was a classic Han moment, and I envisioned Lucas making a Special Edition version where he re-edits the scene so that the pirate trips on his own, and a big fan movement of "Han pushed!" or something occurs.

"Through the Force, things you will see. The future, the past, old friends long gone."

"Do you remember your mother?" "Just images, feelings."

It isn't a big stretch that Leia's memories of Padme are images through the Force.

I actually dug that whole Rathtar bit. A lot. Reminded me of the classic-era Marvel comic books. We got to see just a bit of what the "Han and Chewie Adventures" must be like. LOVED that he went back to being a smuggler... LOVED that he was so cavalier about how he used to have "a bigger crew"... even loved the silly design of the creatures -- which were right out of those late-70's, early-80's Marvel pages. AND, on top of everything else I've been rambling on about, it was something STAR WARS without being another desert planet or another death star or another rebel base. A highlight, for me.

George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art -- potential designs for the museum, and they look like Star Wars spaceships...one in particular resembles Queen Padme's Naboo flagship. Here ya go...

TFA was just a typical JJ movie. Something we've seen before, sugar coated to try to look new, but after a few viewings, falls apart. His heart is in the right place, but he does not have an original bone in his filmmaking body.

Forget it, he just wants to reflexively criticize anything to do with the prequels. Even though Leia says she doesn't remember anything specific other than "images and feelings" - which are things (as Ernest noted) you see through the Force.

Well, if you count the incessant use of lens flare then sure, I guess. (And I've been ninja'd by Goofnut, I see)

But annoying quirks get annoying real quick, and the rest of it (like the smash zooms during action scenes) has been done plenty of times before, I've always felt that JJ thinks he's a purveyor of Hollywood confections in the mould of Seņor Spielbergo but he's nearer Michael Bay in terms of how vacuous most of his feature films have been thus far. IMO.

Why do you think I keep wading in? I'm trying to understand why I don't like it and hope I can finally unlock the means to enjoy it (because I WANT to believe) but as you said in another thread that may take another 13 months yet.

I've been kinda itching for a rewatch anyway, gonna fire up that VUDU copy and see what happens. Last time I tried watching it (when I had the BD), I basically zoned out once the intergalactic Triads and the Scottish dude showed up, followed by Attack of the Rejected Monsters Inc Creatures. Then tuned back in once the Falcon crash-landed on Starkiller. The middle of this movie is just... mush.

Of course not. My tone was meant to suggest I felt they had a bland, 'generic monster' feel to them.

On Star Wars creatures, I'd like to see something more mammalian again, similar to the Wampa. Nothing wrong with reptilian and bug-like monsters, but most of them have been in that vein so far and variety is nice. Give me a big, nasty, furry thing.

Heh, now that you say it, I can kind of see Abrams as the missing link between Spielberg and Bay.

What was vacuous about Super 8 or M:I:III? He didn't write the TREKs either.
