I very much doubt it looks horrendous.

Honestly, the nit picking over these films is ludicrous. Anyone who feels in any way offended by some miscolouration in a special effect seriously needs to get out more.

Star Wars is tremendous fun, but when all's said and done, it's just a piece of entertainment. Let's get some perspective please!

Tony Scott's Top Gun also received a G rating, and so Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis were asked back to add a sex scene. Meanwhile, ADR looped in several instances of off-screen profanity. Top Gun earned its PG.
Its amazing what would pass for G or PG back then. Star Wars had burnt corpses, a scary tentacle trash monster, numerous deaths, and a naked Wookiee.

I'm in the UK and does Anyone know why Amazon says ''Pre-order Star Wars on Blu-ray Exclusively at Amazon.co.uk'' When it's up for pre order at Play.com and HMV too?

It is a "claim". All I could find is this and it's in no way clear that it's based on fact or is simply an urban myth. As the piece says, the UK has always rated Star Wars "U" (suitable for all audiences) and that didn't affect it's box office success. It's an interesting piece nonetheless:

According to Hollywood legend, Star Wars came back from the ratings board with a notice that it had fallen squarely between G and PG. The producers requested it be given the PG rating.

One related theory is that the scene where Obi Wan cuts off that guy's arm was added specifically to avoid a G rating.
- Ditto with the shot of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's skeletons.
- Not to mention the scene where Vader chokes Captain Antilles to death.

Han making a preemptive strike was bowdlerized into him reacting to Greedo in Star Wars: Special Edition specifically so that Star Wars would retain its PG rating rather than being bumped up to PG-13. Certain fans were not happy about this, and also think George Lucas did it because he hates the true fans. The funniest thing about blaming Lucas is that he's been seen on multiple occasions wearing "Han Shot First" T-shirts, suggesting that he isn't any happier about the mandated change, or possibly just pandering to the fans.

Probably because Lucas made such a big deal for so long about everything being his 'original vision', rather than ever being willing to slip out a tacit admission that perhaps he got nudged into a few decisions. In doing so, he basically absolved the ratings people of any blame for the changes and took it all upon himself. Oops.

The original trilogy is rated U (the equivalent of G) in the UK, which doesn't seem to have affected its success

That's what they looked like on the '04 DVD release. Who knows whether that's been corrected or not this time around? It's a matter of waiting and seeing whether the trailer is representative of the finished product. It could go either way. Anything at this point in time is speculation.

All good points. Either way I dont think anything would stop a star wars fan getting this on Blu-Ray. I havent watched the DVD's In over a year because the next time I watch it its going to be in HD

So what? The problem has nothing to do with resolution. A higher resolution will just look worse. If you'd like an HD screencap of that scene, I'd be happy to do it for you.

Now whether it will be the same on the regular Blu-ray, we won't know until September.

What do you mean so what?? It looks like shit therefore it is my opinion that its not a screen cap. of the blu ray itself. Whats the point of arguing this?

For my money, it's pretty certain that the promo video does not derive from whatever new mastering and visual enhancements created for the Blu-ray release. It's just there to present arresting imagery from the entire Saga and create excitement for the new release. Any new footage is most probably still hidden up Lucas's sleeve.

Also, the post from a few pages before -- stating that the work on making these releases final is still very much going on -- is quite heartening. I've never had any beef with the idea of special and improved editions, just with the quality of the enhancements and the way they fit in the overall imagery. If you have optical effects from 1977 side by side with largely experimental CGI from 1997 side by side with better CGI from 2004 side by side with even better CGI from 2010, then the films are not going to look like a coherent visual experience.

If LFL is bringing the quality of effects in all the episodes up to the same high standard, then I, for one, am all for it. Also, hopefully, the new edits and scenes will be done with elegance and tempo that isn't detrimental to the flow of the picture surrounding them. (This is why I never liked the "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" bit, for example.)

Again, Lucas should have the right to do these films properly, at long last. I'd be very happy if he decided to include their original incarnations, for the sake of film history: but at least the inclusion of deleted and alternate scenes points to the possiblity of having such footage included in the Complete Saga Blu-ray.

Everything I've heard about this release so far is giving me cause for cautious optimism.
