Are they Star Wars movies? I can also come up with plenty of non-SW examples where the prequel is meaningless without reading the first books published. Try reading The Magician's Nephew before any other Narnia books, or Gardens of Stone before Flowers in the Attic.

"Ruins" is a strong statement. But are the SW films more effective when watched in production order? Yes, yes I think they are.

He complained about sand because he was looking back on the troubled times he had on Tatooine.

Sorry, but to get the proper experience, it just doesn't work correct that way. But of course one has to put away the prejudice, and with so many Star Wars fans, just like baby boomers, there is no way that kind of brainwash talk will ever be undone.
The proper experience? The were released theatrically in this order: IV-VI and I-III. So no one should've watched the original trilogy films when they were released theatrically? They should've waited until the prequels came out?

Why wouldn't someone start off with IV? Why would Lucas release IV as the first film if he didn't want you to watch it first? Abrams' position is very sensible. Demanding someone watch the prequels first is brainwashing.

The only reason why you're "supposed" to watch the prequels first is so that by the end of Jedi you know why there's a younger guy as Anakin and it's supposed to be more meaningful. In my opinion the impact of that scene isn't any more effective with the prequels. It's already effective in the original version.

Mr Lucas could've given us the original versions (remastered) alongside the SE's,when they were first released on DVD,back in 2004.

Star Wars was most definitely not a fluke. I haven't been at all shy about criticizing The Creator's self-indulgent tendencies (going all the way back to the theatrical release of Jedi) but there's no question that even through his lowest moments he was a very imaginative executive producer type. Even the worst of the prequels have some very cool 'big picture' ideas and visuals.

And there was a time when he was also a pretty talented writer and director. Granted, that time was several decades ago but even if you're inclined to take Empire out of the equation, THX-1138, American Graffiti and Star Wars were a hell of a streak.

That's not just luck or the stars aligning or being in the right place at the right time.

There's got be some talent involved too.

Sure. A lot of things can, but don't, happen in life.
The question then becomes are you going to move on or cry about it forever?

It's been 17 years, and the hate towards the PT still feels very fresh in pop culture. I wish they were the kinds of movies that got better appreciation among the masses over time. Like Blade Runner.

I don't think there's a fair argument that Lucas was or is not talented. Of course he is talented. But artistic talent also has to be tempered by good creative judgment. It seems that Lucas is at his best when there are constraints put on him by other creative people.

You make it sound like a binary choice. A third choice, "Continue applying pressure until we get what we want", is apparently not okay anymore, according to some people.

Well, I think the collective power of the fans' wallets still means something in this market. Especially since a man who had no need for more money is out of the picture now.

There's also the Silver Screen edition of the first movie if someone wants to watch a scanned film print.

How much more pressure need be applied?
Torches and pitchforks, clearly haven't worked.

There is a simple answer to this which I already stated. FINANCING. Lucas made it clear in early interviews that there is a larger story and he wanted 12 films initially.

The beginning isn't as interesting as dropping down in the middle of the action.

I trust the artist, not what the old fans want based on nostalgia.

And despite what some people think, yes I believe George plays to a bigger audience that transcends a generation that can't let go. Asking an audience to re-experoence the proper vision now that he has money is believable.

When I heard onthe commentary that Lucas said he wouldn't allow himself to imagine some things because e knew he couldn't afford it, I totally got it.

Can you understand that? If I could afford it you bet your ass there are things I would have changed if allowed to dream. But of course there are fans that will tell him what he should make and pity we will never know what woud have been.

TFA is alright, but less than everything Lucas made IMHO.
