I prefer they kept it as close as possible to what screened theatrically in 1977 or have both versions of the title as a branching option.

yeah i much prefer the "episode iv" being there because it matches the other movies. but the likelihood of getting THAT but no OTHER changes feels so low that i'm not gonna get my hopes up

It should be the originally released 1977 version, if for no other reason than having that version available in the best possible condition for history's sake. Honestly if they wanna make everyone happy, just restore every version of the movie (release, SE, DVD, and BD - cuz those ain't perfect either) and just release a big OT boxset.

Are you just going to keep repeating this fallacy, regardless of how many times you've been corrected? Is this going to be like the "Berne Act" BS you were spewing in an attempt to justify your theft of copyrighted material?

I can go either way on it...it probably shouldn't have it, but I would not mind. Ideally, they would branch seam the option.

Ew...God, no. Empire would've been a micromanaged, unmitigated, if not "disaster," at least a minor calamity. Judging by J.W. Rinzler's books, Lucas did just fine by getting the sequel-rights away from them.

That would be awesome. The only change I would keep is the new celebration music in Return of the Jedi.

I could go either however I guess I'd rather it have the 'Episode IV A New Hope' subtitle so it fits with the other films.

Yeah, I could go either way. As you say, I'd also expect it to have the subtitle just to fit with the wider Disney saga, but hopefully a home video version would allow the option of both.

That's a very good question. Not that this absolves the sheer idiocy of many of the changes, but if Lucas had changed the movies in this manner before the home video era took off then yes, I don't think there'd be anything like the furore that greeted the alterations 20 years later because people hadn't had the chance to burn the movie into their brain.

I'm sure a lot of folks saw it plenty of times theatrically but even so, the mind can play tricks with that kind of linear presentation (like with people who swear that Luke swung and missed when he first tried to cross the Death Star chasm with Leia) whereas on home video you can rewind and return to your heart's content.

It would be very easy to have it both ways on Bluray, but as I grew up watching these (over and over and over...) on VHS with the Episode 4 in there, that would probably be the way I would watch it.

Honestly I would like if they released it with a seamless branching option to allow the movie to be watched with or without "Episode 4 - A New Hope" in it.

I can see some people wanting it to be as close to the absolute original release by not having it, but since it was a change made relatively early in the film's life (and not 2 decades later or more), and the other films all have episode numbers on them, I can see some people wanting the subtitle for consistency.

I've said this many times before but Disney should release a Blade Runner type box set that includes all versions of the films with good transfers.

That way everyone is happy.

Even though the theatrical cuts are my favourite versions I'd love to have the 1997 editions as well.

I could care less about the 2004 and 2011 editions though.

I found the complete saga (2015) version on eBay, brand new for $17... they are the DVD versions originally released. And the prequels are from the 2006 special edition releases but come with the bonus theatrical versions.... is that set a legit version? I was thinking of buying it for the theatrical cut.... but I'm not sure since I don't know if it's real.

Yup, this. I kinda grew up on the 97 and 04 versions, so having them would be nice (but not essential). The original versions, unaltered in any way, are most important. The 2011 versions can be buried for the rest of time with no complaints from me, though.

The Blu-Rays that were released in 2011 changed the movies again. Shouldn't that collection have those versions of the OT?

For sure... I just wasn't sure if they did those for the bluray and stuck the DVD with the old releases...here's a link so you can get a better idea.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/262766687550

There's several like that on eBay. Some cheaper than others.

Releasing the originals as is wont be the answer since then youll have SE supporters getting grudgy because those versions are now being taken away. So Id be onboard for a Blade Runner like set. Although the OUT is my bread and butter I do have a soft spot for the '97 SEs. I had mentioned a few posts ago that I did see the SE of ANH in the theatres but again I only a few memories of it. After seeing the SEs on TV and even borrowing the SEs from someone at one point, I finally got my own SE set for Xmas '99.

I have the 2-disc limited edition sets for the OT (includes UOT as a bonus feature). It is from 2006 and goes for a pretty penny on Amazon (new from $50 $75 each), but can be had for a lot lesser used. However the quality of the theatricals in this set pale in comparison to Harmy's.

I'm pretty sure that set is a bootleg (all be it, from what I hear, a pretty well done one) that uses the updated Blu-Ray saga set box art with Vader on it.. That set is also listed on Amazon, but not sold directly by Amazon. Basically it's just copies of all of the individual DVD releases of the films, each of which were 2 discs. The prequels had bonus feature discs, and the OT had the theatrical versions dumped from the laserdisc masters on the second discs.

Some reviews on Amazon claim it to be "legit," probably because it looks pretty official, but it's only available through 3rd party marketplace sellers and on places like ebay. It is not directly carried by any major legit store or site (i.e. directly through Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc.)

Unfortunately these things are getting more sophisticated to easily trick those who don't know better and don't know what to look out for. Shout Factory even has a page warning people about this on their site.

I always get nostalgic watching the 1997 editions because they're the versions that I grew up with and they introduced me to Star Wars.

There's questionable changes in them but Lucas didn't go as overboard with them as he did with the later versions imo.

Plus that version of ROTJ has my favourite version of the ending: Sebastian Shaw as Anakin and the Victory Celebration music cue.
