Well there was that story that 4K scans of all three movies had been completed a while back, and they were confirmed to be the 1997 Special Editions, right?

But Edwards said the 4K restoration he watched had just been completed. Its entirely possible that Lucasfilm did 4K scans of the Special Edition negative, and then used that as a base for reconstructing the original versions. And they had just completed doing that for A New Hope.

We can only hope that's the case. Hopefully the special editions are the 1997 versions.

AFAIK nothing was ever confirmed re: the sources used for the 2012 Lowry 4K restoration. But yes, I said the same thing earlier, that the negatives that were used were probably the reconformed SE cuts and that ILM/LFL have been beavering away on restoring all the original material ever since.

Though it's worth bearing in mind that Edwards isn't talking about the restoration having been finished just this minute, as he says they watched the restored movie before starting anything on Rogue One so that's got to be a good couple of years ago.

I thought Reliance had a 4K scan of the original A New Hope? Or maybe I'm fudging that up with something else.

You're right -- they listed it on their site (don't know if it was 4k, the SE or the original, they just listed Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi), and when the news blew up on message boards, they promptly took it down.

Yes, we knew already that Lowry a.k.a. Reliance had done a 4K restoration of the trilogy, my point was that we simply don't know what versions they restored. (what Ernest said)

Sadly I'm going to guess the 2011 SEs.

Personally I don't want to see 4K releases of 97, 2004, or 2011 editions.

There should be original theatrical and a "final" cut which would basically be the fan made semi specialized editions.

You really don't need more than that. I don't want even one version of Greedo firing much less 3.

My mistake, I thought that the Reliance info was that they had restored the original version. Hence why it got any attention in the first place.

Not AFAIK, it only ever said "Star Wars Trilogy 4K 16-bit restoration" on their website before it was pulled. Even without the magic words "original version" that was quite enough to get people excited, how could it not? Star Wars restored in 4K? Sign me up bro!

IIRC steel_breeze (who actually works in da biz) had heard on the grapevine from someone who worked on the restoration that it wasn't the original, but because the person wasn't a fan they weren't all that clued up as to what the differences were (yes, working on this stuff would be a dream for nerds like me, but for the people who actually do it it's often just a day job, nothing more).

Exactly right... and my source from "inside the room" was referencing the 4K restoration of EMPIRE, not ANH. My source said the 20th Century Fox logo was still attached (at that time, anyway; easy to remove) and they were under the impression it was the Special Edition.

Probably not, actually. From what I understand (not being much of a tech guy) the 2004 DVD versions onward were created entirely digitally using a scan of the films Lowry had done in 2K. So those versions are pretty much locked in as those 2K digital masters. Unless they went as far as to redo all of those alterations after having done the 4K restorations, but I'd be pretty skeptical about that.

The original film negatives supposedly exist as the 1997 Special Editions, so a 4K restoration would have to be from that at least, if not from a reconstruction version of the originals, which I'm guessing one or both of those things were done for the 4K versions we're hearing about.

Or they'd just upconvert the 2004 versions.

The only way a legit 4K Restoration of The Star Wars Trilogy can be possible is if they scan 35MM Prints of the films. As far as I know 35MM Film Elements of the Theatrical Cuts still exist and apparently they are in good condition. I'm sure the 1997 Special Editions can easily be restored in 4K since they are only nineteen years old.

Hopefully it was the Theatrical Cuts that were restored in HD. If they were they should release them on Blu-Ray in time for the 40th Anniversary of the original film.
