Agreed. I mean yes I like continuity but McDiarmid sounds like he is literally reading off cue cards and sounds like he just winged it in ESB. Another reason I'll take the original Emperor although I do like Adywan's version. At least that uses the ROTJ Emperor and cuts the dialogue down to match the original.

Does anyone know if Disney plans on re-releasing a New Hope in theaters this year for the 40th anniversary?

Since when do they have rights to do so?

Or whenever they cut a check to 20th Century Fox. Studios make deals all the time. It's not like Disney is hurting financially. Even with the $4B they paid to acquire Lucasfilm. They made all that money with The Force Awakens through ticket sales and especially merchandising.

That being said, we should've gotten an Ewan McGregor force ghost as well if that's the direction Lucas decided to go with regarding force ghosts. Don't half-ass it, go all the way.
Yoda died when he was old, so his ghost is old.

Obi-Wan Kenobi died when he was an old man, played by Alec Guinness, so his ghost is Alec Guinness instead of Ewan McGregor.

Anakin Skywalker died when he became Darth Vader, so his ghost is Hayden Christiansen.

My question is - when are we going to see Dark Side force ghosts? They need to do force ghost Palpatine while McDiarmid is still alive.

They don't, not directly. If there is to be a re-release, Lucasfilm Ltd will distribute the film thru Fox as per their current agreement.

Oh yeah I guess Fox still has the exhibition rights.....maybe they can work something out. Honestly I'd go watch this for the 40th anniversary even if it was just whatever the newest version is of it.

In Canon at least siths can't become force ghosts.

Regarding the Emperor change, it never bothered people for a quarter century. While it is one of the changes that makes more sense, it wasn't a big deal.

I guess for a "final cut" I hope they re record the lines.

I distinguish between actual canon -- the films -- and "expanded canon" -- expanded universe stuff that wasn't in the films but hasn't been contradicted by them yet. The only reason that siths can't become force ghosts is that George Lucas is a lazy writer who got to the end of "Return of the Jedi" and realized that the story wasn't concluded if Palpatine could still come back as a ghost. Now that Disney has made the conclusion of Jedi a lot less final, there's no need to keep that arbitrary rule in place.

Honestly, I could go either way on it, but I'm surprised that Lucas didn't reshoot it in 1983 when he recast the part.

There was a marathon event before Episode VII. All six films were shown, with the Fox logos. Granted, they were digital projections of the blu-ray masters, like Fathom's 75th anniversary of Fantasia and Fathom's Lawrence of Arabia...but yeah, all the Star Wars films back on the big screen happened 13 months ago.

Fox can't say no. That's the point of hiring someone to distribute your films. They get paid, they distribute your film through various media, they get a cut. Distribution alone is not ownership. Paper boys don't own the newspaper.

My theory on force ghosts is that they can appear in any form they wish. Why else would they be wearing clothes? It's not like they brought their clothes with them when they died.

Obi Wan and Yoda appeared to Luke as old Jedi because that's the form that Luke was most familiar with. Anakin didn't really have a reason to appear as he did when he died, so he appeared to Luke as a young Jedi. Rey never knew Obi Wan, so he could possibly take the form of a younger man if he appears to her.

I think they're wearing clothes for the audience.

Just as we've had repackaged editions of the 9-disc Saga blu-ray set and the individual Blu-ray steelbooks released by Fox well into the 'reign' of Disney, in October 2015 to be exact. Why, it's almost as if there was some sort of movie event late that year that Lucasfilm wanted to cash in on? Some people really will never get it. Horses, water, etc etc.

That's an interesting point, and I can definitely imagine them bringing McGregor back that way... but after "Rogue One", it seems like they're really convinced of how great their fake-face technology is, so -- especially with the ghost filter -- I'd bet on them using Guinness if they had force ghost Obi Wan meet Rey.

They may even do both: have McGregor be the mo-cap subject and the voice but have the appearance be that of Guinness. Then again, they've said that it's extremely difficult to do and they did it in Rogue because it felt like it served that particular story, but it's not something they're going to wheel out just because they can. If we do see a force ghost of Obi-Wan, I think it'll be an aged-up (with hair & make-up, not digitally) McGregor.

I thought about that, but I don't know whether I believe McGregor would do it -- the voice, sure, but to go through the annoyance of facial motion capture just to be played by somebody else, even the novelty of it being Guinness. I'd like to believe he's that cool a dude. But I don't think it makes sense to say that it wouldn't serve the story for Obi Wan's force ghost to be portrayed as looking like the same actor that played Obi Wan's force ghost three different times when neither incarnation has any direct connection to Rey anyway. And even though I don't think the technology looks all that great for Cushing or Fisher, I think that once they add the force ghost filter it will probably look just fine and so Guinness would be much easier than those two were.

My bet on how they have both actors (that part I totally agree with you on, I think they'd want to do both in some way) would be that McGregor Obi Wan appears either in an opening teaser scene or a flashback, and Alec Guinness ghost Obi Wan tells the full anecdote and how it fits into whatever larger story they're telling now.
