When Obi Wan speaks to Rey in TFA, the voice transitions from Guinness to McGregor. If he appears to her, I think it will likely be McGregor.

But I don't think it makes sense to say that it wouldn't serve the story for Obi Wan's force ghost to be portrayed as looking like the same actor that played Obi Wan's force ghost three different times when neither incarnation has any direct connection to Rey anyway. And even though I don't think the technology looks all that great for Cushing or Fisher, I think that once they add the force ghost filter it will probably look just fine and so Guinness would be much easier than those two were.

My bet on how they have both actors (that part I totally agree with you on, I think they'd want to do both in some way) would be that McGregor Obi Wan appears either in an opening teaser scene or a flashback, and Alec Guinness ghost Obi Wan tells the full anecdote and how it fits into whatever larger story they're telling now.
Some good thoughts, but Guy Henry (who played Tarkin) is hardly a bum who's just grateful to be there and having his face turned into someone else's, he's a working actor playing a part. It's not about being summarily replaced by pixels, it's about contributing a real performance and I like to think McGregor would want to honour Guinness in that way, if asked. A cameo would hardly take up a lot of his time either, I think Guinness filmed all of his stuff for Jedi in one day!

I don't think anybody would interpret what I said as disrespectful to the craft of motion capture acting, I'm saying Ewan McGregor is a movie star, so for him to spend a full day sitting in a chair getting balls glued onto his face so that they can shoot his scene just to replace his movie star face with a different movie star's face, that seems unlikely to me. I think it would be really cool of him to do it, because it would be above and beyond what I'd expect of a movie star. But if he shoots the force ghost scene, I think they'd just use his face.

Novel explanation: force ghosts age backwards and will eventually "die" when they become babies. (And then somebody can pitch Disney on a "force ghost baby" cartoon.)

I don't think I'm allowed to post the Cowardly Lion jumping through the window GIF again, but yeah, Geoff. Maybe I should move on to simple DERP! cat gifs everytime someone claims Fox can tell LucasFilm when they can or can't release Star Wars...

Now that Disney has made the conclusion of Jedi a lot less final, there's no need to keep that arbitrary rule in place.
Right now the "official canon" is this

The 3 OT
The 3 PQ
The 2008 Clone Wars movie
The CGI Clone Wars TV episodes (finished and unfinished)
Anything made after April 25, 2014

As of now Siths can't become force ghosts. Although Yoda did see a Darth Bane force ghost in a clone wars episode that was a basically a hallucination.

I was kind of hoping that youtube video would have more actual quotes from Star Wars things and less interpreting reasons why it would make sense to assume that Sith can't. In a canon where we all accept "Oh, yeah, Obi Wan Kenobi just straight up lies to Luke about his father" as a handwaved explanation because the story changed behind the scenes, there's nothing in the real canon that would contradict the emperor coming back as the ghost pulling the strings. (I hope they don't do the "Sith have horcruxes" thing.)

The window crash gifs are like the good side of the force...created balance throughout the thread.

Anakin Skywalker died when he became Darth Vader, so his ghost is Hayden Christiansen.

My question is - when are we going to see Dark Side force ghosts? They need to do force ghost Palpatine while McDiarmid is still alive.
But Anakin was good again when he died so he should be old too.

Obi Wan and Yoda appeared to Luke as old Jedi because that's the form that Luke was most familiar with. Anakin didn't really have a reason to appear as he did when he died, so he appeared to Luke as a young Jedi. Rey never knew Obi Wan, so he could possibly take the form of a younger man if he appears to her.
I don't know if there is an official explanation for how force ghosts work or not, but I assume the same thing-- they appear how they want. I personally think the UOT version with Sebastian Shaw makes more sense, because the older man is clearly the same person Luke unmasks on the Death Star, so he would appear to Luke as the fatherly figure he should have been at that point.

In the case of the revised version with Hayden, you can just assume he chose to appear as he was before he was turned. The purpose of it I think was supposed to be for the audience, to bring the story "back" to the prequel films and add that extra closure to them, as Lucas has stated he wanted people to experience the films in Episode order once the saga was completed.

Only because Georgie-Boy couldn't be bothered with making sure the timelines matched up properly.

Right. Because it was already established that Obi-Wan was older ("pupil of mine") than Anakin in the very first film? Seems to match up to me, other than the Sebastian Shaw's age - in any case Shaw's actual performance is still intact (Vader/Anakin dying, not just standing around for 10 seconds smiling).
