Sometimes it about doing the right thing. Preserving those original special effects needs to be done because they are important groundbreaking pieces of cinematic history. They deserve to be preserved right alongside Metropolis, The Wizard of Oz and so forth. To me, having them in pieces in some file drawer is not how a company conducts themselves as the proper custodian of such pieces of historical importance.

Moreover, those original version are not anything to be ashamed of but something of tremendous pride. Make them available for all to appreciate.

Would you call Blade Runner: The Final Cut "vandalism"?

The Blade Runner set includes every version of the film, so it doesn't matter how you feel about it. Watch the one you want.

In fairness the Blade Runner Final Cut was done much more tastefully then the Star Wars SE's.

Plus Ridley Scott never denied anyone good quality copies of the other versions of the film.

Tonight I showed my dad the comparison videos on YouTube to give him an idea of what was changed. When he saw that Anakins spirit has been replaced with Hayden Christensen he tossed my iPhone aside, got up, and walked away. hehe

Couldn't agree more. It's pretty sad that Lucas refers to them as earlier drafts and half-completed films. They were huge movies, not some random workprint that only a few people saw. Lucas doesn't deserve all the hate he gets, but he does deserve an enormous amount of criticism.

Well first off he's not as obsessed about movies as I am. Second I'm assuming you like that change based on the unnessary sass you are giving me??

I'll chime in here.

I don't care about the phone thing but the change itself never bothered me and quite frankly I don't get why it's viewed as such a travesty? I'm a huge SW fan and most of the changes in the special editions don't bother me at all. Hell, some of them are improvements. The only one that grates my nerves is the Han shot first thing. I despise that one because it potentially messes with a characters nature and behavior. That's a FAR cry from special effects clean up, using Hayden versus Sebastian for that very short end scene, and most of the other edits.

The battle of Yavin is completely better in the SE. Some of the scenic changes are great because they help the prequels align better with the OT visually and this is important IMO for new viewers. The jabba scene at Mos Eisley is fine and introduces us to jabba earlier in the film series which I like.

I know this topic has been beaten to a pulp but for the most part the changes are improvements IMO. Not ALL of them but most of them. If the OT came out in its complete, unedited form I have to be honest....not only would I not buy them but I'd probably not watch those versions again. No need to.

I like a LOT of the cosmetic changes made to the SE's but it started to get silly with the 2011 Blu-ray revisions, like the comically obvious photoshopped rocks added in front of Artoo and that utterly dreadful yell from Obi-Wan. For everything that the SE's giveth they also taketh away, and for that reason alone I'd be all over an unaltered edition like white on rice. I find that ANH is also sharper and snappier in its original form, as all those little SE extensions may not seem like much but they all add up and conspire to bog the movie down, especially in the first couple of reels.

Don't get me wrongo, I'll be there day one for the 4K remastered editions, even if they are the ghastly 2011 revisions, but having the UOT restored would make my millennium.

RotJ gets weighed down by the SE additions even moreso than New Hope. The former is really only watchable in its original version.

Yep, the 2011 changes are at their most utterly superfluous in Jedi, while existing VFX oddities remained unchanged. It's that more than the changes to New Hope which convinced me to get rid of the Blu-rays, the new changes wound me up that much. I don't mind the original SE of Jedi, Jedi Rocks and Boba 'Supaman Lova' Fett included, and I adore the new celebration music cue at the end of the film. But the half-assed Hayden addition to the 2004 version started to turn me off, and with all that other crap tacked on in 2011 it's just too much. Lucas can stick his "NooOooooOoooOOOO" up his arse.
