New in the sense that they didn't exist before as commentaries, but I think they're comprised of interviews and old stuff that's been cobbled together to form a new commentary.

And they are pretty good. As commentaries of that kind go.

BTW At a recent q&a with Martin Scorsese at the BFI and broadcast on BBC2 last night, the director said this about colour film in the late seventies.

It was the point at which all films now has to be colour. That's when the colour system was at it's weakest. Because it was cheap and they needed lots of prints. In the right wrong circumstances it could take only 6 months for a print or even the negative to to start to lose its colour. That's one of the reasons Raging Bull was black and white. And even Star Wars. George Lucas shot it as if it had already faded. He said "Watch it. See how the white is sort of pink. So that when it fades. It still looks the same."

I find that ANH is also sharper and snappier in its original form, as all those little SE extensions may not seem like much but they all add up and conspire to bog the movie down, especially in the first couple of reels.

To add more to that, I personally find the "enhancements" to already be more outdated looking than what was originally there.

They did, each film retains the original commentary from its respective DVD edition. But they also cobbled together a second commentary track just for the Blu-rays, using either/or alternate material from the commentary sessions and existing interview sources (I think some of the stuff in the OT is taken straight from Empire of Dreams, but I could be wrongo there).

The only change I actually like in the SE, is the Slave-1 pass-by.

The OUT will always be my preferred version.

I'm glad my favourite - JAWS - hasn't been messed with - much.

He's 51. He did not like the change. He didn't like a couple of the other changes either. I only made that post because I thought it was funny. If I knew this was gonna rehash the whole 'OUT vs SE' discussion I wouldn't have said anything. Hell I didn't even throw in my own personal opinion on the change. I just thought my dads reaction was funny. Nothing else. Again he's not obsessive about movies like I am. However he does like Star Wars so I thought he may find the comparisons interesting.

A movie wins Oscars for special effects and editing, so they release a special edition with different special effects and deleted scenes reinserted. Brilliant!

I'm even sadder to note I'm several years older than your Dad, but still in that age that saw the original SW at a critical age (under 25) where at least argument makes a little sense no matter what side your own. I actually took my school age kids to the theaters that summer to see the SE when they first released. Folks about 5 years older than I am that I've talked with (even film fans and SW fans) are truly amused over the entire argument.

I tired of the Se/OUT arguments (whether small changes or big changes) about 100000 repetitions ago. I just don't understand how people can still go round and round with essentially the same 100 sentences for pushing 20 years now.

It does get tiring to an extent which is why I only pop a post into this thread every so often. My dad actually saw the original SW in the theatres so perhaps thats one of the reasons he disliked a few of the changes. Interestingly enough we too saw the '97 SE in the theatres. I was pretty young then so I dont remember much of it.

One of the tiring aspects to the whole ordeal is people going 'this one's better because--' while I'm more for what I feel should be historically preserved. I definitely think George Lucas should be entitled to do what he wants with his films but there is the whole 'product of its time' thing to think about.

Aaaaanyway...

Super disappointed that the original trilogy isn't likely for a release anytime soon. The best I can hold out hope for at this point is, possibly, all the Star Wars films on UHD.

My dog in the fight is this: I want to watch them the way I grew up with them, which were VHS recordings of the old Sci-Fi channel "uncut and in its entirety marathons" they ran in the early 90s with the stupid Lipton brisk "ahh" and Acura Integra racetrack commercials. Since those tapes have long since disintegrated from overuse (I was 5 and knew how to use the VCR, imagine how that went), I would like a better replacement than those crummy LD transfer bonus dvds.

I'm still holding out that we get an announcement at Star Wars Celebration next month. Me thinks Disney/Fox/Lucasfilm wants to keep this under strict lock and key and we're being put in the dark.

Amazon Video claims to have the theatrical version of Return of the Jedi, but I don't know if they mean the original theatrical version.
