I think the problem that most people have with the SE cuts is the change in the storytelling, not the new FX work. Han shooting first being the most notorious change. I also hate the "Bring my shuttle" change near the end of EMPIRE. It ruins the flow of the climax and they had to mess with one of John Williams most exciting cues to make it "fit". That being said, I think that JEDI actually benifits from the SE treatment. It's a slightly better film in that version.

I'm not saying that Casablanca is without merit. Just not something I enjoy.

I'd rather watch it over Godfather or The Dark Knight though. That's for sure.

If you can get the whole saga for $60, then go for it. Granted, you dislike the new ones, but ROTS is ok (it's on the level of ROTJ, if not better) and if you have a 5.1 set-up, there are some nice moments in Eps I & II.

As for soundmixes, in Ep 2 dvd, the lightsabers sounded awesome (subwoofer? Yes please), anyone think they'll make them the same for the other 5 films?

All three of those films are favourites of mine. Although The Dark Knight has its share of problems.

I originally posted this in the Star Wars discussion thread, but I might as well post it here too, as it may help some disgruntled OOT fans see...:

I think the core problem with the fans of the OT is that they have lost their inner child. and dare I say it, never grasped what SW was about in the first place.
Yes, The SW movies play out like Saturday matinee adventure flicks, but there is much more depth to be had.

However, I believe that most people thought that was what SW was all about, and liked it because of Han Solo and bad-a$$ Darth Vader.

They can't understand that Lucas saw them very differently:

He saw it as a family story. People with real feelings, real problems, who had
to overcome what we all have to face in life:

Loss. Loss of loved ones. Loss of control, Loss of power....

Everything is in constant motion, and cannot be stopped.

As long as you don't understand this you are bound to suffer a great deal.

There is only one way of being able to cope with it successfully:

Letting-go, using compassion and unconditional love.

Anakin was unable to do so, as he thought he could actually prevent Padme's death becoming a reality, but in the end HE HIMSELF made her death become a reality, by clinging on to the illusion of control, greed for power etc.

He made his nightmares about Padme reality. How tragic is THAT?!!?!?!

In Ep. IV-VI we follow his son who is tempted very similarly.

Now, at first it was easy as they were the bad guys, but then Vader told him that he was his father, so naturally, Luke was conflicted and confused a great deal.
Luke then tried to save his father as he believed there was still good in him.
He thought he could turn him to the light side again.

In the end, the very, very end, Luke finally realized that control is impossible, and that one can only do what is right:

Let-go and stand for what is dear to you. You can't fight it, you can't destroy it.

This move made Vader realize his grave mistake, and his ever-swelling love for Luke overwhelmed him.
He too, eventually, and at long last, realized that love and compassion are the only ways to salvation!

And that's only the core story!!!!!

I love Star Wars more than any other movies ever made, because the stories are simply marvelous, most complex, and yet, they play out like a Saturday matinee adventure with warriors wielding their peculiar swords, clone armies firing their laser guns....

Think about the politics, and how relevant that message is.

To me there is only one:

The Complete Star Wars Saga

I love Akira Kurosawa films, Terrence Malick film, and David Lean's masterpieces, but George Lucas has created something many thought impossible:

Something so entertaining and beautiful, and artful (especially the PT),....yet full of universal moral values, complex themes and mirrors, metaphors,....
and don't forget the music by master John Williams!!!!

Those are the best scores ever put on film!

Needless to say it is beyond me how anyone could not love the PT or OT.

To me the dialogue and acting aren't a problem either, as it's the SW style, which I love.

Well, I guess I am lucky to be a Buddhist and share the same thinking as George.

Oh, one more thing:

Until very recently I thought the Jedi were kind of blind and powerless in the PT, besides their amazing physical skills, but a post by one of the fans here made me think about it, and now it's perfectly clear to me:

Whenever you have an institution of something, be it a religion, or a political party, the quality always drops to a dangerously low level.

The spirit of Greenpeace for instance.
Christianity.
You name it!

The Jedi had become clouded by the dark side.

Another thing is you can't always be on top.
Life is like a wave, and if you don't act like one too, you'll quickly find yourself
crushed by one.

Yoda going to Dagobah was the best thing that could happen, as this isolated world gave him deep insight and proper perspective again, which makes the swamp scenes in TESB that much more powerful for me!

Luke become a real Jedi, because he had to face true obstacles of epic proportions!

I could go on and on, but I urge you think for yourselves.

Movies, as any other creation man-made are flawed, so are Lucas' space operas, but darn, they are still mighty fine, and stand tall above most other movies out there.

This is my short love letter to Star Wars.

May the force be with you. Always!

I'll agree with you on the Bring my shuttle scene. Doesn't even sound like James Earl Jones. It does pull you out of the action. At least Lucas didn't change the ending to "No, I am your mother". That would have been awkward

Default Star Wars, eh?

Never saw the Star Wars movies in their entirety, so I might consider renting it, having a Saturday night Star Wars Blu-ray fest (), and if I like it a lot, the Complete Saga is a sure buy. I wouldn't like to have one half of the main story (Original Trilogy) and not the other (Prequel Trilogy), 'cause then I'd be missing out on a lot of storyline.

Judging from the thousand-something comments I've read on various Star Wars-related forums, some fans would like the original unadultered versions on Blu-ray, and they seem pretty firm about it (i.e., "I'm not getting this stupid release unless Han shoots first! Blah blah blah!"). I'm sure this would be nice, and provide folks like me to see the differences between the Original and Special Editions, then see which one works for me. However, if it's not included, I wouldn't sweat it, after all it IS Lucas's work. Just that having both versions of the trilogy would be a boatload of awesome. And it'd supply Georgey here with more money from the hardcore fans. And we know how Georgey is with money.

After Star Wars, I'd wonder if a Blu-ray release of Indiana Jones would be possible. I started watching the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull the other day on an HD TV channel, and it was pretty interesting. Never saw the first three films in their entirety - yeesh, what's with me and old movies? - but I'm sure they're pretty cool. I'm kinda used to old Harrison Ford now, not the young one.

I have some audio gear.... and audio is pretty important to me, but I don't buy "demo material"

I wouldn't say I really don't like the new ones (although I might have said that ) What it really is, is the fact that I don't know how many times I would watch them (some of them... if ever...) I still have a lot of DVDs I purchased with good intentions that I haven't gotten around to watching. Also, while I REALLY enjoy the originals... I'm not sure I would ever watch the bonus material... so that aspect isn't a huge concern.

Knowing me, I'll buy the Saga, then my kids will be watching it 7-8 years from now while I'm in the other room yelling "Turn down that racket!"

You probably could have rented/watched them in the time it took you to study the fan-base

Speaking of shuttles, hopefully Capt. Needa finally gets his own one on his way to apologise to Vader instead of using that TIE-boarding craft for the upcoming set.

That one shot has always bothered me.
