While getting a hold of all the takes of John Williams would be pretty cool, in reality it is like having the Pet Sounds box set. I enjoy the "extras" a few times, but it doesn't break my heart to not have the the skeleton before it is in final release form.

That is why I got rid of the box set so long ago. Thanks for the reminder.
There are people who have put together discs of the "alternates" from all the releases, for completeness sake...

I am sure they have. I have been doing jobs like that lately. To go with that kind of project would make my head explode right now.

There are way too many changes over the years to do branching versions! The best we can hope for is a Blade Runner Scenario for EACH movie.
Here is my post from a few years ago:

Quote:
They should release all versions of each movie together, but Separately!

A New Hope
- Theatrical
- Red Cyan 3D
- Special Edition
- DVD Edition
- BD Edition
- 3D
- 2 Bonus Features Disks

The Empire Strikes Back
- Theatrical

Revenge of the Sith

************************************************** ********************************************
Newly edited version of this:
************************************************** ********************************************
They should release each movie Individually but include all versions of each movie that came out previously. For each film, add 2 distinct Blu-Ray Bonus Disks FILLED with Special Features to each movie. I want them to use all 50Gb on the Bonus Disks! Port over ALL Legacy Special Features! No Movie in this "set" gets The same Bonus Disk. They are all different from each other, like Harry Potter's "Creating the World of..." Disks
Pretty much, turn each film into a Blade Runner-Like Set!
Each set should be at least 6 Disks!

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace - 6 Disks
- Theatrical
- 2001 DVD Edition
- 2011 BD Edition
- 2015 BD Edition
- 3D Conversion
- 2 Bonus Features Disks

Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones - 7 Disks
- Theatrical Film Edition
- Theatrical Digital Edition

41 discs? I just want three, the Original Unaltered Trilogy. If those are included in a 6 disc set with the 2011 versions on UHD then that's fine, but I'll never watch all those other discs.

This is a Blade Runner Scenario... To please everyone and shut up all of the complainers...

Apparently, it doesn't seem to work...

I don't want to buy the special editions again unless I have to, and I really dont want to buy 3 or 4 more discs of each special edition and the prequels again. Don't get me wrong, I would if I had to, but I already have enough of those movies. I just need the Original Unaltered Trilogy.

I am at the point now that if they did release the UOT but only in a big expensive box set I would pass and be content with the Despecialized versions I already have. I will never pay for the Prequels or Special Editions.

Despecialized sucks compared to straight 35mm scan.

See the glitchy corrider during the princess rescue or the final badly pasted in dark dim rebel soldiers during end sequence. The only redeeming feature of despecialized are the fantastic audio tracks.

I respect the work put in, but ultimately inferior.

Compared to a 35mm release print, there's more detail in despecialized. Do the comparison yourself. There are more than enough 35mm scans out there. Despecialized blows them away.

However, if it were a scan from the actual negative or something closer to the negative, that might be a different story.

Uh no.

The despecialized is in 720p which is a downsample from bluray which of course is a downsample from the scan of the special edution negative which is also digitally tinkered 2K scan of the theatrical negative.

And you think there is more detail than the recent 4K scan of a theatrical print? Please get that vision checked pronto....and yes I have compared. NO COMPARISON. Despecialized is inferior and Harmy has admitted so.

If that were the case, why isn't Harmy using 35mm scans and just being done? No need to despecialize anything.

Show me some quotes from Harmy.

I'd still pay top dollar, assuming that they are fantastic, pristine restorations (within reason-- not if they were only in a $400 set with a wooden shelf)

But we are getting to the point where the Despecialized versions are good enough, should an official release never happen. Especially if they keep getting better-- Harmy is releasing a V3 soon, and if a 4k version of the Complete Saga versions come out he will have an even better source to work with.

Please use Google the information is not hard to find. I have my reasons for not posting that information here because it violates the rules of the board.

As for why all that time was put into basically restoring a film with inferior sources like Laserdisc, DVD, 8mm....you got me. When I watched the youtube doc I said why spend all that time and energy?

It appears I wasn't the only one to think this. You find a 35mm print (maybe several) and scan it in at high resolution, which is what happened.

While you may foolishly think there are tons of these kind of large scale scans out there, the facts are that people don't publish it if it does exist.

Despecialized is old news and it is basically a fan edit. You saying it has more detail is flat out not knowing what you are talking about...respectfully. Get hip and perhaps you might change your view.

Going with Harmy and his hodgepodge cut and paste job is plain silly. I am sure his information was used, but the only real answer is to scan the original print and be done with it....which has happened.

p.s. On a side note, when you disregard someone's work...like a team of people taking pictures of an image using a DSLR camera and working on it for 3 years and saying some mishmash of home media frames as Harmy did are better well I try to respectfully say, that isn't wise.

Actually, no. There is no "scan of the original print" in the wild, mr "hip." There are only scans of 35mm release prints, which are much worse than a blu-ray, even at 720p.

And if you can't support your theory with facts, then you've outlived your usefulness. I've downloaded the 35mm scans. They're unwatchable, unless you live for nostalgia of heavy grain and less detail.

Who are you? Mr. lame-ass Mike Verta?

Everyone that used the BDs as a basis has said that there is no real difference between them and a 720p version...
