Yeah, but people are going to be upset one way or another regardless of how they release it.

Probably because most of us don't trust the studio to do it properly and give people what they really want.

Just went through all the changes for every subsequent home video release of the original trilogy. And I have to say, most of them actually don't bother me that much. Few of them are unnecessary, but they don't ruin the film either. Some of them are actually great additions and there are only a handful, which I'd remove entirely. I'd say if we could remove the following Special Edition changes, these altered versions would still be great versions of the original trilogy.

A New Hope:
- Reinsert Ben's original scream/call to scare off the tusken raiders.
- Han needs to shoot first. Period.
- Remove the Jabba scene.
- Remove the added CGI rock in front of R2.
- Enhance or remove some of the CGI stuff when they enter Mos Eisley.

The Empire Strikes Back:
- Reinsert Vader's line "bring my shuttle!"
- Cut Vader walking to his shuttle and his arrival on the star destroyer.
- We need Boba Fett's original voice back.

Return of the Jedi:
- Get rid of Vader's "No!"
- Replace Hayden Christensen's force ghost with Sebastian Shaw again.

That's basically all I'd change, then I could enjoy these films just perfectly fine. Still hoping for the unaltered versions, though.

I especially love the new celebration score at the end of Jedi. Works so much better. Might be the best change Lucas ever did. Yub Nub never did the job for me. The new score is a perfect representation of how you feel by the end of the movie: you are happy because the war is finally over and won, but also a bit sad because of the ones you lost in the war. But most importantly you feel hope for a brighter and better future. The perfect closure to a perfect trilogy.

PS: I think I actually like the 1997 SE of Jedi the most. Jedi Rocks never bothered me either So if we could get that version, I'd be all over it.

Watched Episode 1 last night, after it was over, I watched the last scene (Naboo Parade) in my OLED's fake HDR mode. Man what a beautiful sight, except for all the CGI sticking out like a sore thumb. The effects are going to need some work if they want to drop this in UHD.

Besides matte lines the only change that Lucas made that you could argue was needed was fixing the Wampa arm.

I absolutely agree. I'd also change the following:

ANH:

Wolfman needs to come back to the Mos Eisley Cantina.
Luke's lightsaber needs to be blue instead of off-white.
The original blaster beams for the remote need to be restored.
The line, "There's no one here." can go.

ESTB:

Several of the musical cues have been altered and need to be restored.
Vader's lightsaber needs to be red instead of pink.

ROTJ:

Jedi Rocks needs to go. The additional shot of Boba Fett should stay.

I would also clean up the garbage mattes for all three films.

Oh yes, Wolfman needs to come back. How could I forget about him

And of course I agree with the improved lightsaber fx and garbage mattes.

It was added in 1997. That's why I said additional.

Thanks. I actually deleted my post because after reading your comment again I realized you made it pretty clear that the extra Boba Fett shot was added in the special edition. But thanks for clarifying that it's been added since the 1997 version.

Not a problem. While we are on ROTJ I'd also probably clean up the Sarlacc beak since it's some of the worst CGI in the trilogy. I saw all three of these theatrically in 1997 and even though I was born in 1982 I grew up with the OUT on VHS. I had ANH recorded off ABC I think as a Christmas Special from the early 80s. I had ESTB recorded off HBO from about 1985 and then I had the legit VHS of ROTJ. I didn't care for most of the added stuff in 1997 and I still don't.

Those musical cues are apparently from the 70MM version and were also on the original LP soundtracks. When they were remixed for 5.1 digital for the Special Editions they used the 70MM cues rather than the 35MM that people grew up with on home video.

Ah, that would explain that discrepancy.

I was actually mentioning this so many pages ago and I got blasted for it.

Glad someone was able to get through.

The only fault with at least one capture I know of, is the absence of the superior 70mm print audio (well withstanding the mono print which was last theatrical mix). Thankfully it is not hard to sync that one up.

Basically the entire post-production process (for visuals) would have to be re-enacted to the tune of several million dollars and that's simply not gonna happen.
Thanks for mentioning the two identical posts, I deleted one of the.

I agree with you on that. Especially since most Star Wars fans consider The Phantom Menace to be the worst Star Wars movie. I don't think that Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Lucasfilm would be willing to go that far on creating a new master for a movie that is already disliked by so many.

They're good stewards of their archives.

Now, I'm an admitted idiot when it comes to this stuff, but wouldn't a new master have been prepped for the 3D release, like Jurassic Park and Titanic and Mermaid and the Wizard of Oz? Geoff and CaptVeg probably know. Me - I'm sitting in a corner on a stool hitting myself on the head with a wooden spoon.

To make it 3D they would have needed a digital master of some kind, yes. But it was probably 1080p considering when it was done (in 2011). At best it was 2k.

I am not buying this at all. Lucas stated that the Phantom Menace was a loss compared to the amount of money they put into it. The fact that it grossed over a 100 million makes me think...WOW!

From what I understand, they had to do a frame by frame conversion, and while I didn't appreciate it at the time, I still put faith that Lucas puts everything he could into his work.

Again, for someone that was there. I remember the people clapping at the re-release Special editions and CG graphics were not that old. Time and technology has a way of distorting, but the facts are that we are judging from spoiled eyes today vs what it was then.

I would say the same for a 2012 release. There were doing 8K scans of Gone With the Wind right at the beginning of bluray life, why wouldn't they put half that effort into a Star Wars film?

And for the record, this information about the Phantom Menace being only "2K" totally is in difference to the fact that it was filmed 35mm. There is no way that the scanned print was only captured that way for distribution, unless it was to accommidate the 2K effects...which I highly doubt.
