In the OT, per Lucas who was ever into automobiles, he referred to Threepio as a car salesman -- gifted at b.s. Throw in some fretful worrying and some insecurity that he typically rises above despite his chattering - that's the character. I haven't seen that character on screen since 1983.

That was an early concept for the character, which mostly fell by the wayside and really only survives in vestigial form via Threepio's seemingly inconsistent dialogue regarding Leia in several places in ANH.

It will never be as it was, and I do think the protrayal was lazy, but I cannot blame it all on the writing. Anthony Daniels is known to be very full of himself, and I think the art suffers in kind.

It is not like I hate the character, I just find him annoying. When he kicks and abandons R2 in Star Wars I just have little use for him. Yet he is essential to the plot, and him on his own in ROTJ was one of the highlights of the movie.

That, the Owen Lars scene, b.s.ing the stormtroopers on the Death Star...the deleted Wampa scene from Empire, huckstering for Jabba, pretending to be a God to the Ewoks under Luke's orders, then later leading the stormtroopers into the Ewok trap in Jedi. It's there. Ya know, K2-SO is closer to the OT Threepio in certain respects...Threepio's bad-ass brother in a way.

I find it funny that 3PO's 6 million languages ability is never taken seriously...especially by Han telling him to shutup all the time, yet how many times has it been essential to their survival!

Han usually doesn't have patience for the jibber-jabber...except when he's doing it.

Or good old Star Wars can go right off to Lionsgate! Thanks for the Deadpool 3 rights back. It was really our series to begin with says Disney who helped you make it in a 50% and no one knew it until tonight!

I respect that some people like the prequels and prefer the special editions and will respect any changes Lucas makes to these films, that's fine. Save for Phantom Menace, I have no interest in the PT and until a non-DNR version of Phantom is released I am happy with my 1999 DVD of the theatrical version. As for the OT, if you prefer the special editions and the official blu-ray versions, again that's fine..but there are some people who also support the original versions and want to keep them intact and remember them the way they were originally seen in theaters. I'm glad we're fortunate enough that now when we wanna watch Star Wars, we have the option to view the originals the way they were seen pre-1997 in good quality.

There will be people who will use the acting in the prequels as a stick with which to beat those films. They may as well criticise the acting in the Saturday morning serials upon which the Star Wars films are based. But they don't.

Such criticisms are only ever levelled at the prequel films and not the original trilogy so they can only really be treated as being partial at best and, at worst, ill-informed.

No such DVD exists. The theatrical version was only ever released on VHS.

That's not entirely true. There's a contingent who feels that Jedi was almost as bad as TPM and maybe a little worse than Sith.

Some of us saw the (bad) writing on the wall long before the prequels.

I've heard this argument before, here is a counter argument. Taking inspiration from sci-fi and adventure serials doesn't get you out of "bad writing" and "bad acting" jail. Star Wars -Alec Guinness - Oscar nod. Lucas - Oscar nod for screenplay and director and feature film. Film of the Year from Time Magazine. Raiders - Oscar nods for film and directing, piles of critical raves.

Just because Lucas was inspired by some fun things that were made with the limitations of their time, budget and talent doesn't equate with the Prequels, when Lucas had every access to mountains of time (16 years between Jedi and Menace), budget and talent. I've said it once, so I'll own it and say it again...if Lucas had taken the exact same script for The Phantom Menace and started off with that in 1977, there never would have been an Episode II. The OT is the bedrock upon which the whole thing stands.

That's where all the good will came from, creating generations of fans. It's the reason The Force Awakens was such a box office phenomenon. It's the reason the whole thing exists at all.

*shrug* Just my two cents.

That's not all you said. You also said it was only released on VHS. You think if you make two claims and one of them is true, that automatically makes the other one true too?
