I don't want to say too much here, but I always thought the prequels had higher-high moments (great action sequences) and lower-low moments than the newer two movies.

A more even keel Star Wars for better or worse.

If we're ranking, it's only Star Wars and Empire that get a free pass for me as excellent films in their own right. I like the prequels, Rogue One, Jedi and Force Awakens about equally. They're all flawed but it's possible to have a great time with them if you don't think about them too much.

Well said sir, that just about sums up my feelings towards the post-OT movies. There's nothing in TFA or Rogue which excites me like the pod race in Phantom Menace, or which hits me in the feels like Obi-Wan's "I'm so sorry" to Padme in Sith. But when the prequels clunk, they clunk HARD - and yet I'd still take that over the middle-of-the-road averageness of TFA. For better or worse it looks like Rian Johnson has taken Star Wars to new places - figuratively as well as literally - and I'm cautiously excited about what we're gonna get.

I have a prequel at the top of my list as well:

1. Revenge of the Sith
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. A New Hope
4. Return of the Jedi
5. The Phantom Menace / Attack of the Clones

To be clear, I love all of the films listed above. It's merely an order of preference.

If Disney does release the unaltered OT at some point, I wonder if the originals would take over the as the main versions of the films in the minds of the general public. Or would most people still prefer the special editions?

No one in their right mind actively prefers the SEs. It's more like the general public at large doesn't even know about the damage that's been inflicted on the OT over the last 20 years or that there is a SE to begin with...

Well coloring/rotoscoping Obi-Wan's lightsaber in that one shot and doing the same to Vader's lightsaber in that other shot in A New Hope in the special edition is clearly an improvement on the film. Now if they'd just put the blue color back in R2's panels in the Battle of Yavin that would be just as awesome of a special edition change.

Oh come on now, why fix something that actually needed it when the Ewok needed to blink?

How could the general public not know about the main differences between the originals and the special editions? If you watch a movie that was made in 1977 and you see digital rats and dinosaurs walking by, you’d have to know that isn’t how it was originally.

Not to mention the technology and budget didn't exist in 1975-76 to create complicated shots like R2-D2 hiding behind a rock. Rocks were a scarce and valuable commodity in the Tunisian desert, and papier-mâché just wasn't quite ready for feature films yet...

Off topic, but how do you change the font style on here? My posts used to be in either Times New Roman or Arial (or something similar). Now it’s this weird font with overly-slanted quotation marks and apostrophes. I can’t tell if it’s an iPhone setting or a Blu-ray forum setting.

The digital dinosaurs in the Mos Eisley Spaceport in is the worst! It's like george lucas just watched Jurassic Park and he was so giddy that he went ahead and put in dinosaurs into Star Wars like an idiot. It's just so unnecessary and stupid!

I like the prequels better then every SW film except Empire. At the same time I also watch the prequels more then I do the other SW films.

I'm more than happy with the special edition of ESB. I like the way Lucas opened up the architecture in Cloud City. I don't like the CGI in ANH. ROTJ is a mixed bag... but I mostly don't like the changes.

So you're happy with them COMPLETELY breaking the pace and tension of the escape from Cloud City to see where Vader goes and use alternate angles from Jedi to do it? It's like he was answering a question that no one EVER asked.
