I went ahead and picked these first three movies up. Hell, it's only 13 bucks.

Nobody gave you a straight answer, but yes that's a good set to start out with.

It’s the only Blu-ray set of the originals to start out with really since every BD release is Star Wars have used the same masters.

I heard that people aren't overly happy with the blu ray releases because of some CGI that Lucas added? Seriously, I know almost nothing about any of it other than people aren't happy. I'm wondering how much any of that will bother me since I've never seen these movies without the CGI.

I watched Empire Strikes Back again last night (Despecialized of course. Despecialized all day, every day, never accept anything less) and one word... WOW. What a movie What a spectacle. In my opinion, one of the best movies ever made, one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, the best sequel and hands down the best Star Wars movie

I don't think the CGI will bother anyone who watches them for the first time. They did add some CGI here and there but it doesn't change the movies. You might not even notice all the things. That Blu-Ray release is great so enjoy. They did add some dialogue to Return of the Jedi that ruins one scene in my opinion but I don't think it will bother you.

Ignore all of it. Watch them yourself and form your own opinion on it.

And the deserved response to the finished (which seems relative since they're supposedly open to further upgrades) product should be a big hint to the powers that be to release the unaltered versions.

That’s a bingo.
The Star Wars machine doesn’t seem to be missing a beat sans no UOT on HD.
New fans are born into the galaxy every day as we get more and more removed from UOT on HD fandom.
Don’t get me wrong, I would very much like to have UOT on HD, but at the same time I have wasted a decade griping about it. But hey, different folks!

This is the biggest reason that people overlook. It's not about the old fans anymore, it's about the new ones. That's basically the point of The Last Jedi. If the UOT doesn't get an official release in 2020, it's probably never happening. Hold onto your LE DVDs.

Keep in mind a lot of these changes might not even bother you. I’m only sharing them so you know what the complaints are about. Changes or not, the BD set does have a ton of extras so I think for the most part you’ll be happy with the set.

True. But what I meant is that the official word is that the release of the theatrical versions is still up to Lucas (he probably retained final cut privilege of his six movies when he made the deal with Disney) and he's understandably not interested in releasing something that's he's not comfortable with after he wasted time and money to complete his vision. He made it clear for years, it's literally nothing new:

I’m the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they’re going to throw rocks at me, they’re going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

I’m all for artist intent, as I figured that’s what you meant. Just didn’t want to really poke the hive with that as it’s been done, quite a bit, over the last decade.
So I went in a slightly different angle.

The only thing that contradicts this is John Landis mentioned at a Q&A thing about 2-3 years ago that Lucas told him Disney are restoring the originals. Perhaps he misinterpreted this for something else. I think this was around the time the digital versions came out so maybe that was it. There was never a followup statement on this.

Just my opinion, I dont really think George cares anymore. He went from 'it's my vision' to 'it's my money' after a few years and now that he's not in charge if Disney wanted to do it I dont think he'd object since its not his money but again that's just my opinion. I think Disney just wanna milk in as much as they can with the new movies and from what we've gotten so far I think its safe to say they are.

I'm sure the new fans will also want the original versions when they hear about what was done. Many fans who want the originals to be released on Blu-Ray saw the Special Editions first. I did and I'm sure there are a lot people like me. I saw the movies for the first time in early 2000s.

I also saw the SEs first. I also love the UOT. I also want to get them in HD or even 4K. But Disney/LFL apparently doesn't see evidence that the market would be big enough to justify the cost of reassembling and/or restoring the UOT.

But there's still time. We're close to the point at which things will become hopeless, but we're not there yet.

On another note:

Found a copy of The Art of Revenge of the Sith for $5 a few weeks ago. 'Twas a steal. And flipping through it, the stuff in there is exquisite. It also has the entire screenplay printed at the end. Now I need to track down books for Eps. I and II, but no rush. I'll find em cheap eventually.

I don’t really see how people will eventually forget about the original versions of the OT or not know there was digital tinkering in them. If they were modern movies then it would be easier to be fooled, but they’re from the late 70s/early 80s when they couldn’t do effects like that back then. I’m talking about stuff like the little rat aliens and dinosaurs at Mos Eisley, the singer in Jedi Rocks, Sarlaac Pitt creature with the giant tentacles, etc. Stuff that’s very obvious wasn’t in the original versions.

It would be like watching The Godfather and seeing Marlon Brando petting a fake-looking CGI cat and having extra blood squirt out from characters who are shot to death that’s obviously CGI blood like in The Walking Dead. Maybe in several decades people will forget when CGI started but I don’t see anyone being fooled until then. Also, dont the end credits mention people who worked on the special editions? That alone shows the films aren’t the originals. I’m surprised George let the words “special edition” appear in the end credits if he wants to act like they’re the only versions.

How the heck can anyone forget about them -- every 3rd post in any SW thread bring it up. I'd guess roughly every 20th post on the internet likely mentions some version of the tinkering.
