I agree with Beast on this one; if Lucas says Fett is dead, he's dead.
I agree too. If Lucas did indeed say Fett is dead as far as he's concerned, he's dead.

This sort of stuff scares me because I'm sure there is going to be a bunch of fan fiction written about my favorite TV show, Lost. However, I'll bet they won't be considered canon except by a select few. Why, then, are the Star Wars EU novels/graphic novels considered so canon? Wouldn't they at least need a Lucas seal of approval of some sort before being considered REALLY canon?

Edit: Also, good morning, gents. Ready for another fun filled day debating Star Wars.

I think the EU is mostly considered canon by certain people because for a long while in the early 90's the books were a good follow up to the movies and back then there was just no talk of more movies. I don't really think Lucas as ever considered the EU (books or comic books...) canon.

What would be canon is probably :

the 6 movies
The Clone Wars series
the two Ework movies
and I suppose the future live action series

Does Lucas really consider those canon? If so, I guess I should watch them both.

Also, unrelated question, a pawn shop in town has The Clone Wars season 2 for 20 bucks. Is this worth it? I'd have to find season 1, obviously. I have only caught like one episode of season 1, and it seemed good enough, but is the series worth a purchase?

Im to the point now where if I am going to get into any more books they are going to be pertaining to what happened WELL before what we currently have. Like Darth Plegius stuff, the creation of the Republic, how the whole Jedi thing started, Palpatine as a young man, etc, etc. I will say that some Han Solo backstory that lined up nicely with current stuff would be sweet.

Check out the Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin for the backstory. Titles are
1. Paradise Snare, 2. The Hutt Gambit 3. Rebel Dawn. Good stuff

The problem is that GL changes his mind as often as he changes the films. I distictly remember him saying that he considered, and would treat the Thrawn trilogy as canon. Maybe people consider a lot of the EU as canon because they think of GL as the weak link at this point?

He would probably consider the Ework movies canon as he was involve with them but who can say.

The Clone Wars series is truly worth it IMO. It's well made and with pretty good stories and the PQ is just amazing.

I sort of remember reading about it somewhere as well but I can't recall when or how or where. I always enjoyed the EU (books & comics) and for me I always sort of considered extention to the movies even if certain elements do not match up all the time. That is just a personal thing for me however and I would not debate anyone that would not consider the EU as canon, I think it's mostly up to each person to decide how they feel about it.

While I enjoy quite a bit of the EU, I can only really consider the official productions (the 6 films, the Ewok movies, The Clone Wars, etc) as being truly canon. The funny thing is that a lot of what happens in the films doesn't match up either.

One of my friends told me Lucas completely ignored a whole series of books relating to the origin of Boba Fett. I think that's so typical.

I would think so.

That said, if the Ewok movies & the Holiday Special are canon, but the Thrawn & Jedi Academy trilogies are not... I can understand the displeasure.

Yes, that is so typical to ignore someone else's ideas of the origin of a character you created. I am sure Tarantino would consider the book of Jules Winfield's origin that I am writing to be canon for sure.....

If it's got a SW logo on it, Lucas' people have authorized it and it's "canon." Movies always trump anything else, but everything is a "certain point of view" and subject to a bit of interpretation IIRC. One novel could be the tabloid journalism of the SWU, for example while another series could be more like the Encyclopedia version... which is which is never defined. On purpose. Boba Fett's escape from the Sarlacc was in one of the Dark Horse comics that Lucas himself read and he said he liked it.

Absolutely! Almost all the episodes are next to awesome, and even the ones that are not are still really good. Definitely check'em out. BTW, Landing on Point Rain in Season 2 ROCKS!!! Balls to the wall action!

TFU is most certainly canon. Absolutely no question about that. Lucas even said that. Infact, there is a huge revelation in TFU1.

Wouldn't be the first time. Shadows Of The Empire is supposedly official canon also. But eh.

Lucas said it was. Then again, who am I (and Lucas) to argue with the logic that a video game could be canon?

The story in The Force Unleashed was surprisingly good. I never played Shadows of the Empire, though. I know the soundtrack was great for it.
