Gave The Last Jedi another shot this afternoon...I already didn't have a high opionion of it and liked it even less this time. Definitely the bottom of my Disney Wars list.

Just want the original (1977-83) theatrical versions, completely restored with original (or close to) colour timing and audio options.

If the original versions get released after Lucas dies, why does he want to withhold them until then? What does locking them up for a few more years do if they’re gonna be released anyway?

It's kind of hard to say, as I always feel that discussing people's personal lives in terms of movies is like speaking out of school. Let's just say this - he has a reason for witholding the OT that I think people could probably sympathize with.

The whole "we'll get em when he croaks" thing is just a rumor, anyway. There's no guarantee we'll ever see the UOT get another official release.

What could that reason possibly be that would make people sympathize with it?

Not really. If there is any truth to the long standing alleged reasons, then a petty grudge and vindictiveness are things only petty and vindictive people could sympathise with.

I hated seven since the night I saw it. I hated eight since the night I saw it.
I can't wait to hate nine as well.
A movie shouldn't need a sequel to make it good.

If Kennedy is still running Lucasfilm when George passes, we're still not getting the theatrical cuts.

True but then again there’s no guarantee we won’t either. I’m not trying to sound over eager or anything. I definitely feel the more time passes without it happening the least likely it will in the future. That said I don’t foresee the current sets being the final video release. They’re 8 years old already and I think once the whole distribution issues between Disney and Fox are cleared we’ll probably get a box set of sorts of all films after Episode 9 has been released. Whether they will include the UOT is another story but frankly if they are the current SE’s only I can’t see that being enough of a selling point unless maybe it’s UHD. This only speculation and opinion of course.

Ohh please. If this is regarding that video from two years then again she never specifically ruled out the original versions ever being restored. She only said they wouldn’t make further changes.

I agree!
Also, a movie should tell you all you need to know and not make you have to read books, comics and other crap just to get some more information that should have been in said movie to begin with.

People say "it's because he'll owe Marcia millions!" or something like that but I think that's bullshit. Not the money thing, maybe Lucas did restructure the participation points out of spite when they renewed the film in 1997 (I'm no lawyer), but for me it's mainly because Lucas has always been flat-out embarrassed by the OT, particularly the first one, and it's eaten him up for years that people went bananas for a film that represented maybe 30 or 40% of what his 'vision' was supposed to be.

So he's tinkered with it, and tinkered with it, and tinkered with it some more, defacing one of the greatest pop-culture milestones there will ever be in the name of producing a 'vision' that he can abide. It's his name above the door and he wants the movie to live or die by that, and all it entails, while he's still alive to answer for it (see also: the prequels).

But once he's gone his legacy is no longer his to personally answer for, history will be the ultimate judge so if LFL/Disney want to release the UOT then they will be free to do so. I still don't think there's any steadfast contractual impediment to doing so now, it's simply that they're honouring the wishes of the creator.

This was a major problem with the prequels. All the character development that should've been in the movies was instead in the Clone Wars cartoon.

However, whereas the Clone Wars cartoon was actually good, the supplementary material to the sequel trilogy so far has somehow managed to be even worse.

We'll see the original releases...but I think they'll be bonus features, a carrot on the end of a stick. Might even (hang on to your asthma inhalers) just be digital streaming carrots.

Yuck.

I think I'd rather just keep the laserdiscs.

Oh absolutely, I was thinking that yesterday. I can't see a world in which Disney has their own streaming platform - desperate for subscribers, reaching for any available cash cow content - and them not making the theatrical cuts streaming incentives.

If he really cared about his "vision," he would've directed Empire and Jedi himself. The guy is just a hack obsessed with CGI.

I too don’t see the originals ever being released on video again unless they are accompanying the Special Editions. Let’s just hope that if it does happen they are not sourced from 4:3 letterboxed Laserdisc masters!

The only aspect to this that makes me somewhat disagree with it is Lucas had submitted story ideas for Episode 7 which ultimately were not used. Yes I know this may have absolutely nothing to do with releasing the originals but does make me question the whole ‘respect to Lucas’ topic.
