Yeah, well, this isn’t exactly a step in the right direction....

Why is the ‘97 cut of Star Wars being shown at the TCM festival and how is that even allowed?

yeah Im suprised at this, and goes against the usual Lucas's policy of "there is only 1 version".

I remember getting the first DVD release and watching the three films and getting more aggravated as they went along. When the bottom scene popped up I threw my hands in the air, jumped up and ejected the ROTJ disc and drove back to the store that I had bought them from early that day and traded them in for store credit.

But......please, "why"? I am not sure if this has been directly asked, but no one I know would prefer a mono track compared to the full sound of the surround mix. I understand some changes were made, but besides that, "WHY"?

One is the Oscar winning Mono, the other isn’t. One has sound effects that sound like they are from the ‘70s, the other doesn’t. It’s not about how many channels there are. If the surround mix faithfully reproduced what the mono had, the mono wouldn’t be needed. That is ‘WHY’.

Anything other than mono is a gimmick, in my opinion. I don't like 3D either.

JAWS is a great example of an Oscar-winning soundtrack unnecessarily messed with. The 1975 original was (and still is) perfectly fine.

The only way to make that scene look right is to turn the contrast all the way up.

They look more like the sabers from Spaceballs.

What with A New Hope seeming to get a saber overhaul on DVD--with bright, digitally rotoscoped overlays--was it the original plan to do that for all three films (as a corrective for the Lowry contrast adjustment)? I remember reading about what a rush job that whole set was...and figured they just ran out of time for Empire and Jedi...ultimately finding no further time to apply fixes to most of the blade effects in the blu-ray editions many years later.

..

Apart from the bonus disc with the Empire of Dreams documentary, that 2004 STAR WARS original trilogy DVD set was worthless.

Not entirely true. They got rid of Luke's Emperor Scream from the end of The Empire Strikes Back
