My thoughts exactly! I have this exact same philosophy with viewing options; Why can't cable TV, physical media, and streaming just be equal? All are options, all are equal, one doesn't have to be superior to the other because if you make one option superior, you're forcing the other options to fight back.

Keep all 3 viewing options equal, they stay for all time, there won't be any worries.

Just because it hasn’t happened in the last 10 years does not mean it won’t happen eventually. Again I really hope that’s not the case.

According to the Rogue One director, "Star Wars" (1977) has already been converted to 4K. The question is whether they did the theatrical version too. The cost to reassemble it would be nominal.

It was confirmed that it was the special edition.

Not doubting you, but do you have a source? I'd like to read more about it.

Once 4K80 hits, I feel like I'm set. If Disney finally does put out fancy new 4K restorations of the UOT, great, if not, I'm no longer sweating it.

To be honest, I really loved running those on my projector in all their vintage dirty/grainy glory. I know a lot of people would love to watch these in sparkly-clean new UHD remasters from the o-negs, but for me personally being able to roughly recreate the theatrical experience from back when is equally cool in a lot of ways.

I'm always kind of surprised to hear about new 4K masters made that never see the light of day. With the original Star Wars trilogy, I think the new 4K masters were created around 2012 - 14? And as far as I know, they've never been used anywhere. Now that we're in the Ultra-HD era we'll probably need even newer 4K masters to stay top of the line (with HDR namely). Doesn't seem like the greatest return on investment to me.

It was because of 20th Century Fox owning the distribution rights for the six movies. Disney would have had to pay a cut to Fox for any new home-video releases. At the time, we all figured Disney was waiting until 2020 when the distribution rights for Fox would end (save for the original Star Wars). Now, of course, that is irrelevant.

In the meantime, Disney was able to make some money on the masters they basically had inherited from the sale. They repackaged the Blu-Rays with a Darth Vader box and snazzy steelbooks, plus released them for sale in Digital HD format.

Now that the sale of Fox is complete, they basically have full control of home video releases and are likely preparing to unleash UHD releases of the classic/prequel films plus Force Awakens and Rogue One. The only thing up in the air is what versions of the classic/prequel movies they're willing to release.

I don't see physical media going anywhere, but it is dying and not as concentrated. The focus is digital and streaming.

This was what I basically meant when I said it’s getting smaller. It may not totally go away but it’s becoming less and less of a fixture.

Bring the UHD releases, since physical isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Would you guys subscribe to Disney+ if it included the unaltered original trilogy as a carrot? Will they show up as digital bonus features next year for the inevitable nine-film box set? Both? Who knows. I doubt they'll never be seen again, it's a matter of how consumers will eventually be able to access them.

If they’re attached as digital downloads to the 4K, then that would make the upgrade that much sweeter. Doubt I would subscribe to the streaming service though.
