So we're all aware that there some "leaked" info at Celebration of the unaltered versions coming out? UHD nonetheless. I deal a lot with buying and selling Disney movies. They seem to pay attention to releasing obscure stuff you'd assume no one would ask for like "A country coyote goes Hollywood". I feel far more confident in Disney getting us these for home use.

There is no "leaked info." There's "rumors and conjecture." That's it.

I honestly believe Disney will get these films released. It's too big a deal for Disney to pass up. They bought these franchises (and FOX) for a reason. Disney will no doubt release these in dvd, blu-ray, and UHD at some point.

People have lots of hate for Disney, but George Luc@$$ did us all a favor by selling the franchise to them!!

As for the 4k80 project, I'd love to see it happen but if they are looking at "years" to get it released I believe we will actually have an official UOT in our hands before the 4k80 release.

I didn’t hear that he destroyed it, but rather that he submitted the Special Edition instead of the original in spite of the LOC’s request.

Obviously after Episode 9 is out, a complete collection released by Disney will follow. Makes sense, anyways.

I forget when Library of Congress got Star Wars.
But story goes that after one of the revisions: 97,99,04,11, he submitted A New Hope to take the place of the copy they already had. Library of Congress denied it.

Yeah that's the one I read ages ago, the Library of Congress has a rule about having copies of original theatrical versions of movies.

So when they added "Spartacus" last year, it was the censored version? What about "The Wild Bunch"?

"Star Wars" was put in the LoC in 1989. Interestingly for this conversation, "Empire Strikes Back" was only put in in 2010. I wonder if things have gotten a bit conflated -- it seems very likely that Lucas would've submitted one of the later revisions of that film, whereas the differences between "Star Wars" as of 1989 and "Star Wars" as of 1977 are minimal enough that I'm curious if the LoC would've been knowledgeable and pedantic enough to insist on the original at that time.

I'm guessing it was the restored versions of both, so who knows.

Yeah, when it comes to "Star Wars", I approve of that rule, but there are obvious examples where something other than the original US theatrical cut has, at the very least, equal artistic merit, if not outright superior. My hope would be that their general preference is towards the original US version but that they aren't 100% rigid in that. I'd have no problem if they put the special edition in the library as well, alongside the original, like how they have both versions of "Dracula".

The following is the response from the Library of Congress' librarian Zoran Sinobad:

"While both STAR WARS (1977) and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) are on the National Film Registry, the Library has not yet acquired new prints of either one. When the request was made for STAR WARS, Lucasfilm offered us the Special Edition version. The offer was declined as this was obviously not the version that had been selected for the Registry. We have not yet requested a print of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, added to the Registry late last year.
>
> The Library of Congress does hold the original release versions of STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI, but these 35mm prints were acquired as copyright deposits in March 1978, October 1980, and June 1983 respectively. All three are classified as archival masters and as such cannot be accessed for viewing/research. The existing condition reports for STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (there is no report for RETURN OF THE JEDI) indicate that the former has minor scratches but is in good shape overall, while the latter has extreme color fading. We also have an additional 35mm print of the original STAR WARS (received June 1979) with English subtitles for the deaf.
This is from https://savestarwars.com/lucas-nfr.html so don't know the truth or not but sounds about right

It seems like there is still some missing information (they didn't get a print in 1990? George Lucas was already planning the special editions then, even though most reports are that he only decided to do those after the existence of Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park?), but I do appreciate the link, I'm gonna hold back on further questions rather than continuing this sidebar.

Well, this sidebar is vastly more fun than the endless prequel, special edition, inane questions, bashing and all the other childish and pedantic crap that usually occurs!

I missed the email yesterday to get the limited BottleBux rewards set. Of course it was sold out. So I ordered this. I actually like it better than the #/200 limited set.

It’s as much conjecture as saying Thano’s snap was going to be undone in Endgame. The writing’s on the wall.

What?!

Lucasfilm suddenly and spontaneously doing something they've refused to do for 15 years is as inevitable as a happy ending in one of the biggest superhero movies ever?

Whatever you're smoking, pass it around.

If you think the story ends with Disney refusing to release something that a large number of fans want to pay money to own, then the drugs you're using are just as potent. I don't know if the release is imminent, but it is inevitable.
