The 3D re-release is the 2011 Blu-ray version exactly, but in 3D. In fact, many people suspected at the time that most of the 2011 changes were added so that there would be more flashy gimmickry to make the 3D more impressive, as it was planned at that time for all 6 films to eventually be converted into 3D.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for the conversions for the other 5 movies

Also, I originally thought that the DNR pass done to the Blu-Ray transfer was a misguided attempt to match it with the squeaky-clean digital look of the other two prequels. Now, though, I think it was done that way simply because they used a mastering that was prepared for the 3D conversion, similarly to what happened with the UHD transfer of Terminator 2.

I think you're right. That would explain why ROTS still has fake grain on the BD.

I just got to see STAR WARS projected from an immaculate 70mm print. The original STAR WARS, pre-special edition (“A New Hope” was on the crawl, but otherwise unaltered). It’s an impossible dream come true, and I’m so extremely grateful for this opportunity.
Quote:
It was a 70mm print struck for the UK in ‘81 that was never screened because it tore the first time it was projected. There’s about two seconds of major damage right as the Death Star explodes, but otherwise it looks like it could’ve been struck yesterday.
Quote:
The Academy got special permission from George Lucas to screen it in a double bill with ROGUE ONE, and that’s huge, because this is the first time Lucas has signed off on a public screening of the original version of the film since before 1997.
Quote:
What does this mean for future STAR WARS releases? At this point, no one can say, but Lucas allowing this screening is something that would have seemed impossible literally one week ago

Bet that was a treat to watch.

And that's why Lucas STILL holds sway over his films despite having sold LFL lock, stock and barrel to Disnee. It's a very encouraging sign that he'd okay a screening of an original-ish print, but for anyone who's wondered why they haven't been officially restored to their OG versions up until now, you have your answer: even an original print can't be screened without express permission from his Lordship.

He agreed to it so that some people could see how horrible that half-completed film is.

If the theatrical cut of Return Of The Jedi is ever shown in the theater again I am going to smuggle a bull horn in and when Vader looks back and forth between Luke and the Emperor I am going to yell "No, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" through it loudly to ruin everyone's experience

I doubt spending the entire movie *****ing about how none of it matters because Rian Johnson is just going to shit all over Luke anyway is going to enhance anybody's experience either.

I am glad that Rian Johnson didn't direct Return Of The Jedi. When Leia tells Luke to run away instead of facing Vader he would have.

The point of this screening to was to showcase the VFX work and compare the techniques used to those in Rogue One. (There was a presentation and panel discussion a couple days before.) As for whether it means anything going forward, who knows?

BUT it is something that Lucas himself approved the screening.

That's actually pretty huge. Technically he made an exception back when he allowed the originals to be released as "bonus material" on DVD, even though he made sure the presentations were left sub-par for the time and only included them with the same DVD release you likely already bought in the first place.

Still, signing off on a theatrical screening of a (mostly) original version of the film is quite an unexpected move for somebody who said he wanted the originals to all deteriorate on old tapes until nobody knew anything but the updated versions.

I don't know if it's wise to read much into it, being that the purpose of this specialty screening was specifically to compare and contrast VFX techniques circa the original release with those more recent (an esoteric audience that requires the original version and is unrelated to mass-appeal storytelling).
