That "classic" DVD is actually a bootleg. Those were all over ebay until the Trilogy was officially released on DVD in 2004. I have to admit though the artwork is better than the official 2004 release, lol.

I got those DVDs as a teen, thinking they were legit. Not off of eBay tho.

Listing where?

They nicked the artwork from the VHS special edition releases (from 1997).

I had these as a kid growing up. We went through several copies of each film.

Then I got these which I still have today. I also bought a back up which I also still have.

Then I bought these and then sold them the same day. I finished Jedi and ejected the DVD and drove back down and got store credit. According the the cashier I wasn't the only one.

And I haven't bought the OT since.

Did those early special edition releases say anywhere on the back of the case that the films had changes done to the movies? If not, seems like false advertisement.

Not sure about the first release of the Trilogy on VHS but the DVD box set that I posted above doesn't mention it anywhere. On the widescreen VHS box set it does say something to the effect of "own the original versions one last time". As sue happy as Americans are I always expected a lawsuit when Lucas relented and released the laserdisc ports on DVD as a bonus.

The 1997 VHS and Laserdisc releases were marketed and labeled specifically as the "Special Edition," and I think the summary on the back cover talked about the revisions, but every release after that has just been "The Original Trilogy" or "Episodes IV-IV" or something to that effect.

Yes.

But yes like BNex99 said after this any mention of alterations was more or less dropped on later reissues.

This wasn’t the first Trilogy I owned but my favorite was the ‘92 Trilogy in terms of packaging. Yes it is more or less the same as the 1990 set but the back covers of the cases were changed to (IMO) better designs and the fronts were proportioned better.

If we're talking about artwork, I will always love the 2001-2006 DVD covers.

Those were the theatrical one sheets - the VHS used those.

Not to mention the bootleg DVDs for ESB and ROTJ didn’t use the SE posters.

I wish I kept my recorded-off-TV versions from a Sci-Fi marathon. It was around 93/94, they were uncut network-wise, had the tractor beam line, and I think they were even widescreen. It would be purely nostalgia value now, since I have the faces set, but still.

If Disney were doing anything other than a straight re-issue of the 2011 BDs then they'd surely let us know about it.

they should include both versions of the classic trilogy in these releases, the theatrical and the special edition, best of both worlds.
