Yes, I know. And people still refer to Obi-wan dueling Anakin or Anakin whacking the younglings.

nodeerforamonth wanted to know why people never refer to Vader as Anakin and I was pointing out that people do refer to Vader as Anakin.

I don't know how one could call themselves a "Star Wars fan" if they only really love two out of the ten movies.

Eh, how many Halloween movies do I have to love before I can call myself a Halloween fan?

Is it one? I hope it's one

While Bobbyjoe766's stance may be a bit harder than others (although I can see where he's coming from, as ROTJ was relatively disappointing), I'm sure there's quite a few fans who "really love" half (or fewer) of the SW movies to date.

It probably isn't at all uncommon to find people who only enjoyed the three OT films, possibly along with Force Awakens and/or Rogue One. As such, gatekeeping the phrase "Star Wars fan" and restricting it to only those who actively enjoyed the prequel trilogy and Last Jedi is not a reasonable position.

Discounting the entire "saga" makes Star Wars and Empire much stronger, actually.

Why do people still think that the general feelings towards TLJ are majority negative?

I never said that, but it's undeniable that at the very least a significant portion of the fanbase's positive sentiments towards the sequel trilogy's potential that The Force Awakens generated was completely squandered by The Last Jedi.

Hey at least the last Halloween movie was pretty decent and didn't feature a guy roundhousing Michael.

It's a lot like The Force Awakens. Copies the original, but still good.

That's mostly because of peoples's personal expectations and fan theories they wanted to come true but didn't.

It feels like people are always more willing to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt than they are with Lucasfilm. MCU movies are always coming out on a consistent basis within months of each other, and the metaphorical cement is always wet in fans' memories. As time goes on, the harder cement dries up, and so, the longer it takes between sequels, the more concrete peoples' nostalgic feelings are about the installments that are already out, and they can’t accept any new developments in the sequels without thinking “This character would never do that!” or “Why wasn’t this brought up before?” That's the problem with making more Star Wars sequels decades later. Everyone has too many preconceptions about what Luke would and wouldn't do, and it affects their viewing experience.

My only personal expectation was that TLJ wouldn't be a meandering, disjointed mess with nonsensical plot twists and the addition of completely unlikable characters, but here we are.

The originals are all I need in a UHD release but I wouldn't say no to them including the '97 versions as well. At the very least that would allow someone to seamlessly incorporate the the Victory Celebration music into the original RotJ (the only change Lucas ever made that I consider a massive improvement).

Christensen's force ghost in '04 and Vader's scream in '11 are my 'Han shot first' moments. I will never watch those versions again.
Yeah now that I've seen the unaltered versions, that's all I want on UHD. I still contend that most of Lucas' changes are harmless or even beneficial, it's just that the small number of bad ones are REALLY bad.

And it's funny cuz I never saw the unaltered versions til 2014 or 2015, in the lead-up to TFA. After Revenge of the Sith came out in 2005, Star Wars was basically over as far as I was concerned, so I fell out of touch with it. Didn't stop loving it, but with no new movies coming out, I stopped caring. (And it didn't help that the one new movie we got between RotS and TFA was that damn Clone Wars debacle lol)

I don't feel like getting into an argument on this subject right now (or ever really ), but I for one was not disappointed by TLJ because of my expectations or fan theories. I was more than fine with Rose's character, Leia's "moment", Luke being in self imposed exile, the death of Snoke, and I actually kind of liked the whole Canto Bight detour. I was disappointed because it did not feel like a Star Wars film. Every single other SW film hooked me from the very beginning and filled me with a sense of mystery/wonder/amazement/etc, even the PT, especially the first time I watched them, but TLJ was pretty much the exact opposite. There weren't any new and interesting worlds or characters and very few (good) surprises/twists (for me anyways).

I keep meaning to (re)watch it and write a more in depth review with comparisons to the PT/OT/TFA, but I haven't gotten around to it yet

Oh and one more thing, even though I feel it's easily the worst SW film ever made (that's not too bad considering how much I love all the others), I'm still able to enjoy the movie, and I absolutely love watching it in 3D

We hadn't seen a salt flat planet yet in the main saga.

It’s worth pointing out that Marvel can pump out three movies a year since 2017, with releasing films consecutively since 2010, and every release earns BILLIONS worldwide outgrossing with each progressing installment and yet when Disney released five Star Wars films between 2015 and 2019, they actually grossed less and performed lower than the previous release.

Perhaps the general public just isn’t into Star Wars as much they are with Marvel. They literally felt more fatigued with five years of continuous Star Wars than a decade of 20+ Marvel movies.

There's one little problem with what you're saying. The Last Jedi came out a year AFTER Rogue One, and it grossed MORE.

Rogue One was in 2016 and grossed $1,056,057,273.

The Last Jedi was the following year, in 2017, and grossed $1,332,539,889.
