Hate is a strong word and should be used towards things like injustice, famine and disease but the changes to the OT are pretty hard not to hate too.

I think the detail is sufficient to get the background in the films, but I’m pretty sure they wanted to avoid getting too into detail in politics in the new films. A two minute talk in Takodana could have resolved a lot of confusion.

One of the big complaints about Phantom Menace was all the political exposition about taxation, treaties, and legislative procedure. I'm sure JJ & co had that in mind and intentionally avoided it. Instead, they focused on things from the perspectives of the characters.

But I have never read the books or anything, and I got the general gist of what @TN05 explained from just the movies. Not the details, but the basic idea. So JJ didn't do too poorly.

This franchise isn't called Star Wars for nothing, after all.

And while plot beats might be similar, the characters and motivations are different.

There’s enough in that movie to differentiate it from A New Hope that I just don’t see it as the straight “ripoff” that (apparently) most people seem to see it as.
So let's see, you have a droid, carrying a message, that needs to get to the republic, that falls into the hands of a young character who years for more on a dessert planet that now gets wrapped up into the conflict, a light saber death of a main character on the bad guys base, which is basically a death star again, a rescue of a character on the bad guys base, and the destruction of said base by a small group of freedom fighters that need to fly in close to destroy it before it destroys the good guys base.
No, I can't see how anyone could see it as a direct ripoff. BTW even JJ himself has said he borrowed a lot from the movie to ease people back into SW

You're only comparing them on a surface level. It's the details and reasons for everything happening that make the difference.

Just seen on Amazon that the first trilogy (IV, V and VI) is getting released again, could the untouched originals ever appear on BD/4K?

Bingo.

Which I said in my post. But apparently that went over his head.

Why do you suppose people very often only look at the "whats" and not the "whys" of everything?

Probably just repackaging.

I don't know a single Star Wars or science fiction fan who liked The Last Jedi. None of us have any interest in paying to see further Disney Star Wars. Disney blew it big time, they delivered a terrible poorly paced nonsensical movie that literally shat over established canon which has permanently damaged the fanbase and by extension their bottomline.

But his personal morals came poring back in. Unlike with the Vader incident, in which he almost killed him WITH emotion, he was almost about to kill his nephew WITHOUT emotion, which he realizes is just as morally screwed up! So, he ends up not doing it. It makes PERFECT sense.
I feel like we watched a completely different film. Luke’s knee-jerk reaction to Ben’s visions, was completely based on Luke’s emotional response. He felt fear and anger, and therefore, he briefly thought about killing Ben, to (ironically) stop any suffering. I really don’t understand where you get the idea that Luke thought about killing Ben without emotion?!

If you genuinely feel that Luke thought about killing Ben without any emotion, then that’s fair enough. But can you explain, without posting a video, why you actually think that, because IMO, the film itself shows completely the opposite.

Speak for yourself. I am a huge Star Wars and science fiction fan, and I liked TLJ and have a lot of interest in paying to see more Disney Star Wars, and I know quite a few others as well. Hell, I was at Celebration this year and it seems there's a lot of folks pretty keen on Star Wars still. Sure, there's plenty of fans who threw a fit and don't like TLJ, and that's fine, but don't gatekeep with this whole "True Fan" hyperbolic crap and say REAL fans hate it and NOBODY is excited for more, because that is just empirically not true, dude.
