I only like the original trilogy in their original versions.

I absolutely hate the new trilogy. Hate it with a passion.

I felt George Lucas was giving me the finger during the whole new trilogy.

Agreed.

It's interesting to hear the Lucas apologists come up with all kinds of wacky rationales for the "make it up as we go along" universe of Star Wars. The PT is the best example there is of over the top CG trying to make up for a combination of terrible writing and bad acting. As others have said... Lucas was surrounded by "yes" men during the production of the PT... he needed a person like Irvin Kershner to give the films the soul they are so obviously lacking.

Considering the PT films are on average way better than the OT films, I just don't see your point.

If you're into the "neato!! explosions and flying shiny things" aspect of Star Wars then I guess you're right. The PT was the most superficial collection of "film-making" I've ever experienced. The films were lifeless.

Considering I'm talking about the story it's self and not the special effects, then I certainly don't agree.

The PT had the larger and more interesting story. And Palpatine's rise was the best aspect of any of the films.

I wouldnt call anyone that accepts or enjoys the PT as apologists. Maybe we just can take the good with the bad and get some enjoyment out of them? There is no crime in this. The acting was dodgy at times, the CGI stuff did get tiring here and there, and the love story wasnt done that well. Fine. But, it was great seeing the leadup to what we get in the OT and that was the point of the prequels. I knew George would employ all the toys at his disposal for the PT and that was OK with me. I didnt like it all but it wasnt some deal killer.

Just as we are called "Lucas apologists", sometimes I feel like those clinging to their Laserdisc versions of the OT with closed minds and an anti-prequel crusade are a little out of whack too. You telling me you didnt even like Revenge of the Sith? C'mon... thats just not believable. The OT has some suspect acting and campiness too.

Cant wait for these to come out on blu-ray. It somehow "completes" my blu-ray collection for the time being.

That's exactly what I meant by "make it up as we go along"... the PT storylines were held together with string and bits of tape if we're talking coherence and continuity. Midochlorians... 'nuff said.

I don't mind the Special Editions of the OT... there are moments in the PT that are interesting but, as a whole, it was just completely out of step with what was created in the OT. There was barely a connection. In ANH I got the impression that Mark Hamill's Skywalker was a teenager who really existed in that world... the acting was such that he seemed to be a part of that universe. In the PT everybody seemed like cardboard cut outs. I'll argue with anybody that if the OT didn't exist that the PT would have been about as pivotal as the Resident Evil or Riddick films... mostly spectacle.

How is Palpatine's rise a "Make It Up As We Go Along" aspect of the films? That doesn't even make sense.

Also.... Yoda: "The Force is strong in your family."

Clearly there was some biological componant to the force. Plus the symbiotic aspect is a major metaphor of the films.

People really seem to miss the point of the Midis, simply to have something to complain about. Read up on them sometime.

Don't watch it, then.

I am starting to get so tired of all this bickering and complaining, I sometimes wish he never ever releases the originals again.

Been wishing he would have stuck to his guns over that since the last unaltered VHS release.

You know, the "Never Available Again On Home Video" release of those versions.

But then he caved to the fanboys and released them as a bonus disc on DVD. Should have never done it.

How does "The Force is strong in your family" imply anything about a biological component of the Force? "It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together" seems to imply otherwise.

I've been skeptical of Lucas since "Vader betrayed and murdered your father" somehow became "Luke, I am your father". It was clear that he massaged the storyline to fit his needs... the thing that I thought was ridiculous is assertion that he had it all in his head from the very beginning. That's a crock. For some reason I hear that Jon Lovitz pathological liar character in my head every time I hear about the evolving storyline of Star Wars. "Yeah... that's it... Vader is Luke's Dad".

Again, the Midis are Not the Force it's self. They're just a biological aspect that is attuned to the Force.

And...

Obi-Wan: "Your father... was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and *became* Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view."

To Obi-Wan, much like to the Force.... Anakin died when he fully embraced the Dark Side.

Now all I hear is the Robot Chicken "From A Certain Point of View" show tune in my head... you've given me a perfect example of Luca's patchwork, on the fly, creation of his universe.

I think you give Lucas too much credit. I don't believe he owns the Indiana Jones films - they were Paramount releases and Paramount is currently owned by Viacom and run by Sumner Redstone.

The right to release Star Wars (even though Lucas does hold a certain amount of content control) is held by 20th Century Fox, which being Fox is a Rubert Murcoch company.

Murdoch and Redstone hate each other. One isn't going to hold back a release to help the other.

Jurassic Park is owned by Universal, which is part of NBC/Universal, currently owned by GE but soon Comcast will be the controlling partner. They couldn't care less what Fox and Viacom are going to do.

Star Wars is an exception, but 99% of the time, the Director is a hired hand. It's rare that they even get final cut.

How dare he release something that fans of his films crave. Much better to stubbornly stick to a silly marketing campaign from years past.

Everything Star Wars owned by Lucasfilm, Fox only paid by Lucasfilm to release the films. I believe Indiana Jones is also the same.

I believe you are correct.

That's why Lucas/Spielburg was able to kibosh the Blu-Ray releae of the other Indy films when CS came out.
