Literally nothing I said contradicted that.

I didn’t know what it meant... was told... and decided how dumb and childish it sounded.

Just had to come out of the woodwork to comment on this:

I, for one, sure did not feel "shut down" by this. He really only showed how little he truly understands about the OT. But I will defer to a commenter from the nerdist article who sums it up perfectly:

And then maybe a year later in ROTJ, he considers himself a full-fledged Jedi, able to levitate C-3PO with focused concentration and hold his own in a lightsaber battle. He showed no great understanding of what Chewie or R2 said (needing Han and 3PO or the X-Wing monitor to translate). In sum, Freddie has no idea what he's talking about and anyone with a passing knowledge of the original movies (ie not Nerdist) would know that. Fans are tired of loud-mouthed ignoramuses hating them.

Some people make the basic assumption that there was a three year gap between ANH and ESB so that the audience would appreciate that Luke would not have had an epiphany about pulling sabers across the room unless there had been a three year gap.

Bollocks. Kershner describes the scene on the commentary as Luke discovering his power to do somehting. Not applying three years of training (after trying to see if his body would stretch another three feet in length a couple of times )

Rey being as powerful as she is isn’t a problem with the ST. If these movies were made in the 80s no one would be complaining about her powers and calling her a Mary Sue or whatever. Fantasy movies don’t need to explain much why someone is powerful. They just are.

Is it canon that ESB is set three years after the Battle of Yavin? Sure, some time has passed, but three years?

EDIT

Ah...the Expanded Universe monster rearing it's head again...

"Between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, approximately three years passed, at least in the old Expanded Universe canon. In the current canon, there is no reference for how much time has passed."

I’ve read elsewhere online that a fortnight (14 days) to a few months passed between ANH and ESB. Which is more plausible than saying three years.

Never thought I'd ever write about Freddie Prinze Jr. again after the late 90s, but here we are. His points aren't at all revelatory for those of us who like the sequels and aren't anal-retentive about female characters on film, but it's good that he said them out loud to show the lack of coherence and the hypocrisy of the most ardent haters.

Yes, they should instead better spend their time getting upset at people who don't love movies that they do.

a truly epic rant about modern Star Wars fans, their toxicity, and their inability to admit that at it’s core, Star Wars has always been a fable for children.
Just goes to show that even someone (briefly) at the heart of cultural phenomenon can miss the point entirely. Mr.Jarrus is making the old mistake of confusing intent with outcome.

Quote:
One of the biggest complaints over the past two years from a certain set of Star Wars fans is how powerful Rey is in comparison to Luke at the start of the current trilogy. But Freddie pokes holes in that theory with his precision lightsaber. And he points out the hypocrisy some fans have in relation to how many give Luke a pass on how fast he became a badass Jedi.
He didn't become a "badass Jedi" until well into Return of the Jedi. Heck, does this dude even remember how Empire Strikes Back ended for Luke? Rey on the other hand the first time she uses a lightsabre beats Kilo, a highly trained Jedi/Sith/whatever the heck he is.

There's also the fact that an indeterminate amount of time occurs between the three episodes in the original trilogy while Last Jedi occurs in the immediate aftermath of Force Awakens.

Rey is and forever will be cinemas most famous Mary Sue, in fact the character that introduced a semi-obscure fan fiction reference to the mainstream. Well done JJ, Daisy's not going to resent you for that in the future.

We know *some* time passed, because of Han stating he ran into a bounty hunter on Ord Mantell (sp?), and Vader's fleet is combing around searching for Luke, but three years? Seems a bit much.

A badly wounded and bleeding Kylo. Even Finn gave him something to remember as Kylo was toying with him (callback to Luke giving Vader a smack on the arm).

Because a powerful "Jedi" like Kylo, who as we later found out even Luke was scared of, would be beaten by a girl who hadn't even heard of the Force 48 hours previous? Nah, even in an injured state that's stretching credibility somewhat. As for Finn, who cares about him? He's an impulsive idiot (certainly in Last Jedi)

JJ made her a Mary Sue and Johnson promptly wasted any potential she had for character development. There's nowhere interesting for he character to go, at this point the only way to explain her abilities is "The Force" and that's just dumb and boring.

Why would Daisy Ridley resent JJ Abrams? She wouldn't have a career without him.
