I don’t get how Rogue One is supposedly the most like the OT.
As far as aesthetics go, sure, it replicates the iconography of A New Hope to fit into that timeline, and the VFX for the ships is an assimilation of the model builds of that time. But as far as the tone and feel are concerned, it’s the most unlike the OT out of any SW movie. It feels more like a gritty war movie, whereas the OT (and other saga films) is fantastical and filled with whimsy and mysticism. That’s not necessarily a bad thing since it’s a spin-off and has the freedom to be different, I’m just pointing that out as to why I don’t agree with the OT comparisons. For example, I can’t imagine anything like that Vader hallway scene happening in the OT just like I can’t imagine something like this happening during the Battle of Scariff: ![]() |

I dunno about "the most like the OT", I've not really seen that thrown around a whole lot? But as a bridge between the PT and OT, the digital and the analogue, I think it's wondrous.

Some thoughts/questions about Rogue One:
Do any of the rebels know that [Show spoiler] We know that Jyn Erso told some of them that, but I don’t think it’s ever spelled out if any of them believe her. I’m taking about the ones who didn’t die. It seems messed up if [Show spoiler] but that’s life...I wouldn’t mind a spin-off movie/series with Chirrut and Baze. Those two characters were great and it would be cool to see more of them. I know there’s a novel that deals with their lives pre-Rogue One, but witnessing their story in a movie/show would be welcome. The Rogue One soundtrack is pretty damn good. I listened to the whole thing on YouTube and it pays tribute to and is respectful of John Williams’ Star Wars scores while still having its own identity. Some of those themes are still stuck in my head. |

Rogue One has its good points like the action scenes and the scenes with Vader. However I’m not a fan of CGI Tarkin and overall I find the movie even more depressing than Episode 3. And of course no opening crawl is a slight negative as well.

Speaking of spinoffs, did you know there's one planned for Cassian Andor? But anyways, of the four new Disney SW films, Rogue One is absolutely my favorite. TFA is a fantastic thrill ride, but due it retreading old ground it comes in second (but, a strong second, like if these were graded with points, it would be only a few tenths of a point behind R1). The first parts suffer from "moving the chess pieces around the board syndrome", but they're such interesting pieces and showing us new parts of the world (like someone else said, showing that the Rebellion had factions within it) and then the final act is a slice of fried gold and is an absolute showstopper, it makes an awesome film. And I do think it's tone is closer to the OT. It is grittier, but knowing that it's starting the whole plot of the OT, and it holds so close to the visual aesthetic, it truly feels like it should be considered a part of the 4-5-6 story. Like, if you went back to 1984 or something and showed it to someone (like dubbed to a VHS), they could totally believe it was always meant to be part of the story. I could even see a theoretical Bluray set with the original versions of the OT and this included as a sort of "Galactic Civil War" set. Make it look like one of the old VHS box sets and I'm there on day one. |

Boba Fett’s theme from The Empire Strikes Back is my favourite - the bit where the Han Solo carbonite slab is being escorted through the Cloud City corridors.

For anyone who thinks that Rogue One doesn't feel like the original trilogy but does think it captures it with it's aesthetic and ship builds, well that's at least something then that undeniably contributes to it, but on top of that id then personally add the thing that makes it more feel like the original trilogy for me (and shows obviously that people take different things from the films to what they think makes it feel like a Star Wars film) is that it has a more serious and mature feel to it which the original trilogy also had.
Even tho the original trilogy had it's fun or silly moments, that isnt what makes it a Star Wars film for me. When those moments happen in the OT i dont laugh at them or react all that much, i can take them or leave them, they are just there. And also i was a kid when they was released so silly things at that age are fine, i guess now im older i prefer the serious natured stuff which the original trilogy also had and expressed it better than the sequels do. I dont mind humour in them, but Im not a kid anymore so i dont care for the silly/childlike stuff that's in the new trilogy, (or it's not what makes a Star Wars film for me) I dont watch childrens films, the only childrens films i watch are films i first watched as a child. Any modern childrens films arnt made for me, they are made for children. Those comedy moments aside, the rest of the OT plays out like they are actually mature grown up adults talking and expressing themselves in an adult manner. Tarkin, the officers of the empire, they are British older gents who convey maturity and express an imposing air of authority. As does Vader. Even cgi Tarkin in Rouge One managed to do a good job of creating scenes where it felt like a mature adult conversation happening between him and Krennic. Actual arguments, raised voices etc. Compare the gathering round the table at the base in Rogue One & TFA, in Rogue One it came across like how adults talk, arguing etc of a serious and believable nature, a sence of drama, and urgency etc. In TFA that same scene is empty & lacking in comparison. Id also say the hallway scene with Vader in Rogue One is more likely to happen in the OT, or it certainly is when it comes to the more mature nature of the OT. Or given a choice out of the 2, that hallway scene would certainly fit more in the OT than what it would the sequels. The sequels are way to child friendly and fluffy to have a scene like that in them. In comparison the sequels have more of a child sensibility about them, or could be described as having a live action cartoon feel about them. The characters are abit light & fluffy in comparison. The Hux equivalent of Tarkin is like a 21yr old bank manager, meaning someone who doesn't look or behave old enough to be taken seriously in authority, or that he also hams it up like a pantomime character or a cartoon character. Kylo Ren, the equivalent of Darth Vader is like a teenager who is mocked by most of the other characters, and looks like his bottom lip is gonna start quivering and he's gonna break into tears in most of his scenes. Even the fight/lightsaber scenes in the original trilogy have more of a serious realistic and raw feel about them. In TLJ for example, that fight between Finn & Phasma was pathetic in comparison and again felt like a scene from a cartoon. So il take my Star Wars films with the serious adult tone, and others can have their Star Wars mean the silly scenes, like Finn & Rose catching a ride on the legs of a scout walker. Activated my 7-day free trial of D+...and A NEW HOPE is definitely a new master; the famous star destroyer finally has green lasers again. Huge purple push is now gone; skin-tones are normal. Looks great... but since all the digital SE nonsense is still there, I'll go back to my 4K77 v1.4 now.

Doesn't look like they've re-done any effects; all the Mos Eisley stuff still looks ludicrously cartoony. Just much better color time and much better detail with no frozen Lowry grain.
