Thanks for those replies to my comments.

I already own the Original Trilogy on Blu-Ray. It is the Combo Pack that Fox released back in 2013, I was thinking about buying the Prequel Trilogy counterpart because I don't own those movies on Blu-Ray, and it would match my Original Trilogy set perfectly.

I don't care much for the Prequel Trilogy but I don't mind watching them occasionally and I wouldn't mind owning them for competition sake.

But I gotta be honest, those individual editions that Disney released back in September are overpriced. $30.00 for each movie is a rip off, especially since they are the exact same discs that Fox released back in 2011. I paid only $30.00 for my Original Trilogy Combo Pack back when I bought it in 2014, it was on sale at Best Buy.

I've heard that the presentations of both the Original & Prequel Trilogies on Disney+ are superior to the 2011 Blu-Rays. I wonder if they will create new Blu-Rays sourced from those newer masters.

They might surprise you. I have a feeling it will be awhile, probably until at least they have another live-action Star Wars show "on the air", or the next season of Mandalorian.

Disney has bet the bank on their streaming service. They want things to remain as exclusive as possible. They would much, much rather increase (and maintain) their subscriber count than sell some Blu-rays.

The OT transfers are a big improvement over the Blu-Rays, they were done from new 4K scans from Lowry in 2012. The prequels are the exact same masters as the Blu-Rays, except graded in HDR. Phantom Menace still has the same DNR'd waxy look, and Episode II still has the teal regrade.

They come from new scans struck in 2014 with an HDR pass. I would think the upcoming UHD sets would use these for both the UHD and BD in each release.

Thanks for the information.

Maybe it might be a better idea to hold off on tracking down a used copy of the Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Pack of the Prequel Trilogy in case the Prequels get re-released on Blu-Ray with new transfers from the new 4K Masters. I prefer owning hard copies of movies I want.

I checked out some parts of the Original Trilogy on Disney+ and the new presentations offer a very nice improvement over the 2011 Blu-Rays. It still sucks that they are the 2011 Special Editions and not the Original Theatrical Unaltered Versions.

Also it is my understanding that the OT color timing has reverted back to pre-2004.

I noticed that too. A good example is The Empire Strikes Back. On the 2004 DVD & the 2011 Blu-Ray Hoth looked blue instead of white, but the new master restored the original white color.

Same goes for the Lightsaber duel in the Carbon Freezer Chamber. The 2004 DVD & the 2011 Blu-Ray lost the deep blacks and featured dark blues. But on the new master the deep blacks are restored.

I've got the 2-Disc DVD Editions of the Original Trilogy that feature the Original Theatrical Unaltered Versions sourced from the 1993 Video Masters created for the Definitive Collection LaserDisc set and apparently the color timing on those is very accurate to the Theatrical presentations from 1977, 1980, and 1983. I've also got the LaserDisc set of the 1997 Special Editions and as far as I know the colors on those presentations are accurate.

Hard pass on any release that is thus disfigured, whatever the resolution. That teal tint is just revolting.

Thank you for the head's up.

On YouTube, I believe they call those discs GOUT (George's Original Unaltered Trilogy), and numerous videos show a 4-block comparison of the same scene with
-GOUT
-some old print
-the blu-rays, and
-one of the "despecialized" editions.

In every single case I've seen, it's the GOUT versions, from the discs that you mention (same as the laserdiscs), that have by far the best colors, despite the inferior DVD non-anamorphic resolution.

I actually spun up my GOUT DVDs in late December. I've seen far worse Non-Anamorphic Widescreen DVDs but it was still a big disappointment that Lucasfilm didn't give us Anamorphic Widescreen presentations of the Theatrical Cuts. But hey at least they are watchable It was a lot of fun watching those versions of the trilogy again and I love the 2.0 Surround Mixes on those discs!

Well seeing as Episode II ended up being slightly lower than 1080p resolution anyway, you're not missing out there, either. I only spot-checked the transfer on Disney+, but aside from a bit of enhanced contrast it doesn't really look like much of an upgrade from the Blu-Ray, definitely due to the limitations of the digital cameras Lucas used. And again, it would have been great if they regraded the transfer more like the original color-timing, but they didn't.

Cue the doctored photo to prove "it was always blue"...

It's either OOP or OOS. You can get the complete saga for about the same price.

Oh, at that price I would've assumed it had the original versions on the disc or something lol. Thanks!

Seeing is how Disney/Fox re-released the first 6 on separate formats, I wouldn't be surprised if the combo packs are OOP.

In Empire Strikes back there appears to be an error in the new effects.

Before they walk in and meet Vader they walk by a window with new effects. You can even see the top of the stairs they will walk down.

But right before they go in and are surrounded the window scene is back to the unaltered version.

Is this an error and if so has any release corrected it?

I think Adywan’s fan edit corrects this but otherwise no none of the official releases have.
