Exactly. Sometimes I think this is why so many people think there are continuity issues or plot holes...they're not really paying as much attention as they think they are to the story or the dialogue.

Lucas explains it fully in the commentary for RotS. But it's pretty much common sense.

George Lucas has since indicated (on the Revenge of the Sith DVD commentary) that the appearance of Vader's former self, Anakin Skywalker, as a Force Spirit at the end of Episode VI is due to a combination of Anakin's own latent Force ability, his achievement of a moment of unconditional compassion at his death and redemption, and Yoda and Obi-Wan's spirits helping him extend his identity out of The Force.

And it was said by Palpatine in Episode III that they were looking for eternal life - a way to bring somebody back from the dead. It's possible Vader figured out how the Force worked. Of course, if he shared it with his master, there's a bit of a loophole regarding the possibility for a sequel trilogy. Nothing would stop Palpatine from "coming back".

Edit: nvm, just read Beast's post.

Except if you read some of the books Palpatine actually does come back Luke goes to the Darkside and Leia brings him back

I'm familiar with the storyline, but I really don't think I buy any of that as a true part of the story. Where the films begin and end are where it begins and end for me, personally. I find it hard to believe Lucas really thinks any of these stories are actually canon

Yet plans to release his movies one a year in 3D starting in 2012.

So clearly Seth Rogen blew his comments out of proportion. Must like Rogen's career.

If you're asking me if I doubt Lucas' story-telling competence because of some ridiculous Mayan calendar belief, then I believe a man can be stupid and still retain intellectual property rights.

As far as I'm concerned, the only person who tells me what happens in Star Wars VII through IX is Lucas. Regardless of his belief in 2012 world doom.

I can appreciate some of the novels of what happened afterwards but at the end of the day - Yeah, Retrun of the Jedi ends it.

Still, there are some good reads out there if you want more Star Wars...and we all do sometimes. The books that tok place well before the PT are pretty cool too. I wish they would expand on more of that since most of the plots of the post ROTJ are rehashed/refried.

That I'll agree on. I like some of the pre-prequel stories I'm familiar with. There's a lot of lore to work with there. But RotJ kind of wrapped most of the Jedi stories up for the galaxy - which is why the saga ends there I guess

Plus the EU brought back Boba Fett and killed Chewbacca with a moon.

So while fun at times, I don't see it as true canon.

Yes. He was hit by a moon. That was the last EU book I read. It was such trash.
Quote:
At the start of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Han Solo and Chewbacca were on the planet of Sernpidal when it became a target of the alien menace. Using massive gravity-altering creatures called dovin basals, the Yuuzhan Vong began to drag Sernpidal's moon of Dobido from its orbit to the planet's surface. Han Solo, his teenaged son Anakin, and Chewbacca began organizing a desperate evacuation, cramming as many escapees aboard the Falcon as they could.

Solo and Chewbacca have had many close calls in the past, and have executed countless last-second escapes; Sernpidal was not to be one of them. As the moon rushed closer to the surface, Chewbacca was cut off from the Falcon. Anakin was faced with a terrible decision. The Falcon could not wait any longer. Rather than endanger everyone aboard, Anakin piloted the ship away, leaving Chewbacca behind. Chewbacca stood his ground, howling defiantly at the immense moon as it crashed into Sernpidal's surface, killing the mighty Wookiee.

Just the latest version. With most likely a few more changes and tweaks.

The original versions will not be included.

The EU books had been chomping at the books to kill someone off for a while.

There was talk of killing Lando or Leia for a while. Since people wouldn't miss them as much.

But Chewbcacca got culled basically, from what I understand, he was one of the hardest to write.

Honestly, if taken too seriously, I am of the opinion that the books can totally undermine people's opinions of the films. Because most of the time the books are terrible.
