I really wish there were more footage of Mara Jade. Last edited by OG Pooh; 01-25-2011 at 01:00 AM. |

You know... I have to check. I remember that picture, but for some reason, I don't remember it actually being in the film (I rarely watch Jedi). I'm going to put the DVD in and check it real quick. I'm starting to think it's not.
I've deleted the post until I verify it was actually inserted into the SE. Last edited by OG Pooh; 01-25-2011 at 01:22 AM. |

I love ROTJ. It was my favorite of the three when I was a kid.
Now I'm blown away at how different the first half is to the other half. The scenes with Jabba really scared me and made me feel like I was watching a horror movie or something. Almost like two seperate movies imo, between Jaba's palace and the forest moon. I also hope they leave that scene out. Not seeing Luke in the beginning until later reminds me of A New Hope, where we see things from the droids' perspective until Luke comes into the picture later on. I also think it's awesome to see Luke's new Jedi abilities during the escape from the sarlaac pit! Quote:

Her appearance was not listed in her Wiki page. I checked the DVD, but could not find that shot. I guess I remembered it from somewhere else. That pic was from the customizable card game (which I never had).
Watching the scenes from Jabba's Palace, I got to thinking... 1: From the way she was described, I always thought Mara Jade was the girl behind Leia & Chewie (when Leia, disguised as the bounty hunter first brings Chewie before Jabba) in the red jumpsuit with the white belt. 2: The BD release is really going to show how fake Jabba looks. ![]() Anyway, I'll repost that picture even though it's not from any version of RotJ, it is an official Lucas product. That said, I wasn't exactly thrilled with what GL did with Jabba in ANH either. While I prefer men in costumes to CGI, I think these new hi-res formats (like BD) are going to ruin a lot of older works. Hell, even the sets & props in MIB look painfully obvious on BD. If people can deal with Stop Motion King Kong, they can deal with a CGI or Puppet Jabba depending on the scene.

![]() ![]() Even Star Wars has issues. It's matte boxes around the Tie Fighters would have most likely been dismissed by many back then because of the sheer awe of the spectacle. If the effect was composited today using current methods that wouldn't happen or could be minimised dependent on the original shooting conditions. Episode I's model work showed the benefits of traditional special effects model-work composited with the latest techniques and the results were great. Ultimately what I'm saying is that although the effects work was spectacular for the time (and most shots are still spectacular), Blu-ray is now offering detail at home which hasn't been seen since a theatrical run. For older films that will create a new set of challenges as even fans of those films will have had 30 odd years of movie-going viewing since then and will have seen all manner of things on the screen. That changes the perspective of the quality of work. I'm sure no one would dispute that the work is outstanding and that it was groundbreaking, now it's just a matter that it's "warts" will be out for show and some people won't be quite as forgiving as they might used to have been, even when viewing with nostalgic eyes. Personally, I'm a bit of a mix of the two opinions. There are some things like the matte boxes I'd love to see gone. Other things add to and keep the charm of the film and should never be changed. You can see these in the DVD and HD broadcast as well. Note that in these shots the ships (or station) are not against a black background, but other objects: the station in front of the Endor matte painting, the TIEs in front of the pipes & interior. ROTJ was not recomposited completely, they only fixed a few things here and there. They simply ran out of time when Lucas decided that all three films would get a SE release, rather than the first. The horrible lip sync with Han in the Endor approach is still there. The rearmost TIE fighters still "pop" into existence in the "fighters coming in!" shot, and other numerous errors that are pretty obvious and still around from 1983. |

No, I don't agree with that.
One of the numerous documentaries about SW explained that, particularly with the snowspeeders on Hoth, it simply wasn't possible at the time to superimpose the speeders over the background without the background bleeding through the speeder. It was a tricky balance, a compromise, between the background showing through the speeder and the matte lines around the speeder itself. With the digital tech used on the special editions they were able to resolve those issues for the first time since those effects were filmed. It's got nothing to do with contrast and brightness and everything to do with the sfx available at the time. Matte lines are an unfortunate by-product of the effects technology used back then. They didn't show so much in space scenes but they were a nightmare for the Hoth battle. I'd also question the quality of cinema back in the late 70's and 80's. If you can't see the difference in a modern theatre that uses digital projection compared to the film projectors of the past then get your eyes checked. If SW were shown in cinema's now there would be a huge difference in the quality of the picture. Old films that have been given restoration treatment for a blu-ray release are showing detail that probably wasn't noticeable when they were first shown on the big screen. So the earlier point about the puppet Jabba looking less convincing on blu-ray is possibly a sound one, we won't know till we see the finished blu-ray, but I certainly remember someone talking about restoration of old films and pointing out that make up lines on actors that weren't previously visible might show up after the clean up process. The fact is that tv studios have had to rebuild their sets for HD because HD shows up so much more detail. Regardless of the size of your tv, HD will show up more detail and therefore more flaws. So older films that "got away with it" back then will need special treatment to not show those flaws on today's tv and cinema screens. |

I'd love to see a CG Jabba in ROTJ. The old puppet is pretty awful.
Altogether, I would love if they re-did both the Cantina scene as well as the Jabba Palace scenes with CG creatures, or at least new made-up creatures. I like the little giggling creature though. Another thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is the one-eyed monster in the Garbage disposal. It's utterly ridiculous, and could REALLY benefit from a makeover. Also, I'd love to see all the computer screens updated with images that better match the PT, such as Luke's cockpit when he tries to hit the Death Star. Of course, ALL the matte lines should be removed too. ![]() |

I hate to say this, but after watching the lightsaber duels in the PT... All of the duels in the OT (not just the Obi-Wan/Vader duel in ANH) look very lethargic now. I'm sure someone (cough cough) will rationalize that the Jedi are all but extinct... Luke hadn't had the proper training... Vader was older... Blah, blah, balh. But the reality is that the duels just aren't visually as intense as those from the PT. Last edited by OG Pooh; 01-25-2011 at 01:13 PM. |
