NOW I understand...

Lucas COULD just do a reboot and remake the entire set of films. But my guess is that he wouldn't want to actually use actors - just a full remake ala Avahtahr... BUT instead of making them from scratch, he is going to slowly over the years, keep changing the work print, slowly replacing characters with CGI, then the sets, dialogue - heck before he is done they will be totally new movies devoid of any original content.

BUT he is going to keep rereleasing it as the work progresses - one iteration at a time. Similar to Microsoft, he will change the name to make it easier to understand. For example:

Star Wars Episode IV will have the following identifiers:

Starwars V4-1977 - A New Hope
Starwars V4-1997 - A Newer Hope with cooler lasers.
Starwars V4-2011 - Still Hoping but now in HD
Starwars V4-2013 - Hope isn't lost - but we fixed some more stuff.
Starwars V4-2017 - Hope you'll buy this - in 3D
Starwars V4-2023 - No Hope for the orginal actors - all gone thanks to CGI!
Starwars V4- 2039 - The ultimate collectors set - now with digital copy!

Brilliant Geologist!

But seriously though, I've actually heard rumors that for the blu ray, Luca$ is going to replace the original puppet Yoda from Empire and Jedi with one that's entirely digital like in Clones and Sith. I don't know if this is true, but if he does it, I have a feeling that will probably be the last straw for most people, maybe even the most devout Lucas apologists.

I was told Lucas said he has no intentions of replacing Yoda from the OT.

That is a very good thing but also surprising.

It's a shame, if true, because while the muppet work was fine for the early 80s, an aged version of the Ep3 model could be so much more believable.

What I like is that the Lucasfilm rep said they aren't going to call them the Ultimate Editions because they're digging up new stuff all the time. Where are they digging up new stuff all the time? How big is their cupboard? Wouldn't it be easier to find all the stuff first then make the Blu-rays? Or will they produce the BD's then some janitor will go "you won't believe what I found in the Star Wars cupboard! This is worth re-doing the whole set again!"

I don't really mind what happens to the SE's of the OT. Some Trench Run stuff in ANH can be improved, especially the close-ups of the model work. They've always looked oddly zoomed in to me. They can redo all the SFX if they feel the urge.

If there's one thing I hate in a movie it's when three-foot tall green jedi knights aren't believable.

I wouldn't be against the change, but Lucas already said it wasn't gonna happen.

Also... when you do stuff like "Luca$", you only hurt your argument.

Especially since if he wanted to, he could really milk the franchise. Like releasing the original versions.

Or releasing the Holiday Special, even though he's made it clear he has no intention to. Or numerous other things.

Frankly the films haven't even been released that many times. A lot less than some films, that's for sure.

There's only one thing George likes more than selling lots of merchandise and that's his ego. Giving the UOT the treatment it deserves at this point would basically be an admission that the SE's aren't worthy of replacing the theatricals.

Star Wars (the "vision") is protected from everyone except of course Lucas himself. The franchise is victim to his every change of mind and stupid ideas that he may come up with years down the road.

Compared to movies like Terminator 2, Star Wars hasn't been released that many times. I can think of a couple different DVD releases, a couple different VHS releases. One for original, one for SE in each case. That's not that many, especially if (like several people here), you believe the SE are different films.

And Terminator 2 hasn't been released nearly as many times as Evil Dead 1 and 2 or the original Halloween.

Nope. Because there hasn't been as many releases as you seem to believe.

And he hasn't gone out of his way to release the original cuts, holiday special, Ewoks & Droids cartoons, etc. Example, why did he wait so long to release the OT on DVD? Was that to "Milk It"? So to say he's milking things is wrong on so many levels. If he wanted to, he certainly could.

It's true. And I'm talking about legitimate releases, not just repackagings.

Right. The OT has been released three times on home video (four if you count the ld > dvd port) and the PT has been released once.

And the dvd and bd announcements were both met with cries of 'it's about freaking time'.

That hardly constitutes milking.

Correct. There's 2 legitimate DVD releases. The rest are repackagings to refresh them at retail.

There's the original release with the Empire of Dreams "Bonus Disc", which was later dropped to give people a cheaper option. And then there was the second release, where the movies were released with the Laserdisc Encode of the original versions of the films. The second release also was the first time the films were available separately on DVD. So we have a total of 2 since 2004. Not very many considering some films.

If Lucas was really "Milking It", there would be the Original Theatrical Versions released of not just the OT but also the PT.
And the '97 versions of the OT would have been released as well on DVD. Not just the 2004 finalized cut.
