I really don't mind what they do with the OT SE's I'm sure we're in for a treat with some new SFX. I'd love some more dynamic Trench Run stuff but I don't know how far I'd want them to go from the original.

On a humerous side if the Death Star could blow up an entire planet like Alderaan why did they wait to clear Yavin? Why not destroy Yavin then Yavin IV? Just blow everything up! Or did the Empire accountants say 'I'm sorry we don't have that in our budget it's one planet one moon a month, you can't go over your quota...."

Your assumption is that the Death Star is free to fire at will as often as it wants. But I would guess that it takes a while to generate the enormous amount of energy it takes for one shot to blow up a planet so perhaps they only get one shot every few hours or more. The amount of energy needed to run the space station alone might also explain why it moves at such a slow speed and doesn't have hyperdrive.

I love all the talk about "original intent", etc. If the "original intent" (i.e., the first draft) survived, ANH in particular and the rest of the movies would've been very different.

Among the things that stood out to me that I didn't know before (or that I forgot sometime over the last 34 years) from watching that YouTube documentary are:

1) All the Luke and Biggs scenes at the beginning were terrible and really ruined the pace of the movie. Great idea to excise these filmed scenes, but for big fans it's fun to see them. There's a 2-3 minute scene I'd never seen before, despite all the Biggs/Luke stuff I've seen over the years. They're noticeable drunk and touchy-feely, and it's weird.

2) Even up to when they were filming the gang on the Death Star, Lucas had Obi-Wan living and in fact delivering the "attack on the Death Star" speech that some other random old guy actually delivered. Lucas said that while they were filming, he suddenly realized that Guinness was just sitting around with not much to do, so he figured he'd kill him. Guinness wasn't happy about it.

3) Even to the second draft, what we now know as Leia's hologram was originally a hologram by Deak Starkiller telling Luke (his brother) a bunch of mumbo jumbo about "the Forces of Bogan", "the Legions of Alderaan" and "the Kiber Crystal". LOL.

The reason i ask is cause a few of my co-workers ordered it on amazon
last night and this morning they received an e-mail from them saying that even though they pre-ordered it and they paid for 2nd day delivery that they may not get it on release day due to the high volume of pre-orders.
My friend also called them and inquired about it and a customer service rep said that they have exceeded their initial shipment of the complete saga on 2/10/11
and that those that pre-ordered after the date will have to wait up to 2 weeks for their shipment.
I'm glad I ordered mine on the day of the announcement. I hope they ship on a "first come, first serve" basis.

I'd considered that. Tarkin does say 'you may fire when ready', there doesn't seem to be a period of delay or wait for recharching. Is it written that it can't travel into hyperspeace? It doesn't seem to have any large thrusters or engines like lightspeed capable craft. Hyperspace vehicles may not need thrusters they may just jump. If they had destroyed Yavin first the shockwave alone would have devastated the smaller moon.

From Wikipedia.

Quote:
The first Death Star is depicted in various sources of having a crew of 265,675, as well as 52,276 gunners, 607,360 troops, 30,984 stormtroopers, 42,782 ship support staff, and 180,216 pilots and support crew. Its hangars contain assault shuttles, blastboats, Strike cruisers, land vehicles, support ships, and 7,293 TIE fighters. It is also protected by 10,000 turbolaser batteries, 2,600 ion cannons, and at least 768 tractor beam projectors. Various sources state the first Death Star has a diameter approximately 140 kilometers. There is a broader range of figures for the second Death Star's diameter, ranging from 160 to 900 kilometers.
And I farmboy blew it to pieces.... Tarkin really defended it well with a dozen Tie-fighters. Hopefully for the BD they can push the boat out.

I'm waiting for day one in-store purchase. I don't think we'll have to worry to much about lack of stock. I think eveyone will be catered for.

Almost every story starts out one way and then changes a bit. No storyteller has it "all planned out from the get-go." My point is that these changes you're talking about are ones that occurred during pre & post production (before the movie was actually finished). And these kind of changes happen in almost every movie/story. Scenes get cut because they end up slowing the movie down; the creators come up with new ideas during filming.

I have been on sets as both talent and as part of the production staff, so I now how it goes. Nonetheless, there are still some people who claim Lucas had it all planned out in 1974. Clearly that's not the case.

I think Lucas has some kind of basic idea (planets, creatures some plot guidelines etc) and they then start on the design on those then he goes to the script. And in the parlance of Indiana Jones he basically makes it up as he goes along....

And I'm 100% fine with that, a lot of people work in that organic way. Some people find it quite creative some prefer structured outlines. I think the epic saga he originally outlined is a distant memory on faded green lined legal pads. And I'm 100% cool with that too....

I wasn't trying to insult your intelligence. I just meant that nobody ever really has it planned from the start.

Yep, and if you see the CG model, not only is it shiny new(er), it has a blue striped paint job (page 195 of The Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith).

Isolated and blown up from my HD version.

Hey no worries, I didn't think that you were. Some people seem to think, however, that Lucas is the exception and had everything mapped out from the get-go. While he may have had a basic story or theory, it obviously changed and was very fluid (for the best, I think) based upon just some of the examples I listed.

Funny how the Clones Wars is such a huge deal, yet it never existed until, at the earliest, the third draft of the script.

I'll pick it up in the store the day it's available. It's too big a release to order online.

The laser needed to cool down. So if they blew up Yavin first it would have taken them longer to blast Yavin IV to pieces.

The design was improved for the 2nd Death Star (way shorter cooling times plus an improbed targeting systme), thatīs why you can see it blow up multiple capital ships.

Since I am at the Battle of Endor, I think it would be nice if we actually saw the Executor shooting, instead of only seeing it's shields being blown up by two small starfighters and destroyed by 1 kamikaze starfighter (which doesn't make a lot of sense but oh well)..
