True... If I were to have one thing that I din't like bout the prequels, it would be the Phantom Menace in particular... to me it seemed too much like a type of 'Young Star Wars' spin off, it was a bit to kid-ish!

None the less, a great whole set!

Would also love to see the original 3 in their original glory!

Yes, it would be cool if George finally released an anamorphic widescreen version of the OT with a good sound mix and re-mastered PQ so everyone could also own those versions we grew up with but if he never does then he never does.

Of course they do. You think Lucas is going to let a great copy out in the hands of pirates? I pointed this out in earlier posts and people whined....but he did release them. Yeah, the new versions of the old films are not bad. The theatrical originals though are 4:3 and the master the Laser disc came from in 93 is what they used to create those discs.

People wouldn't feel a need to pirate them if they just released them in HD. 90% of people that pirate do so because there is no alternative, we/they would much rather buy a real copy. When they aren't available, and there is no other option, is when most people pirate.

Though Lucas doesn't seem to care much about pirating of them, because there was a HUGE market for the OT because they waited so long to release the films on DVD, and they were easily available on eBay and the auctions were never reported/canceled. They seemed content to let people do this for half a decade until they finally issued any version on DVD.

You know, this whole Lucas thing is just dumb...

Doesn't it seem that he has no care for his fans... like he intentionally does the same thing over and over again for the fun of it... Most movies get the right treatment the first time, and the creators don't play any games!

Between Star Wars and LOTR, it is just ridiculous...

Us Star Wars fans will buy his releases every time he does this, and he knows it, and seems to get a high off of it!

Just release the WHOLE set on Blu-ray, with all the versions so everyone can be happy... NO MORE GAMES!!!

I mean are they not just movies... and were they not made for us, the audience... so give it up already!!!

Ok, that's it, I'm done... in any case, can't wait, love the whole series!!!

The discs are not improperly labeled.

When I talked to Lucasfilm's VP when these discs were released I took him to task on the quality of the theatrical cuts and he said they wanted to do something special for the individual releases of the movies on DVD so they went to George and said "Why don't we include the theatrical cuts as a special feature."

Therefore the theatrical cuts are the special featue which the reviewer in the link seems to be too dumb to realize.

Since they are a special feature they looked for the best quality version available which was the Laser discs and used those transfers.

Since when has a studio remastered a special feature? Almost never, so why should Lucasfilm remaster the primary special feature on these releases?!

It makes perfect sense, since Lucas wanted to show Anakin as an innocent kid, therefore the film is more innocent and brighter than the others. I like that about it, because ROTS is so sad and tragic, I immediately want to watch TPM again.

this review is the dumbest thing i've ever read!

if people want to watch a pristine, 5.1 version of Star Wars, watch the 2004 re-releases

if people want to see the movies as they originally aired in theatres, they watch the theatrical version that is not quite as pristine and has 2.1 audio.

I'd rather them NOT just slap the 2004 audio on the theatrical version (obviously not for the whole film, but it would cover about 90% of the video) i'd rather hear and see what people watching the movie in the theatre saw and heard at that time.

The problem with that is that the masters used for Laserdisc aren't the best quality available. It's just teasing the fans. Releasing them in crappy quality that hardly anyone will buy just so he can say that nobody wants the originals. Lucas should look at how Ridley Scott did the Blade Runner cuts. Not only is every cut present, but the Final Cut has been done with much more care and respect to the original version.

Uhm, you are aware of the fact that the 70mm prints of Star Wars (A New Hope) offered a 6-track mix prior to the dawn of Dolby Digital, aren't you....? As long as they had access to that mix (or restored it as close as possible to its original glory) they could slap that as well as the original Dolby Stereo onto a restored BD edition along with the restored footage. It could be as close to pristine quality as the 2004 version if they only bothered and didn't take any short cuts (ie cheap and lazy) like they did with the limited editions. It doesn't have to look like crap and it certainly didn't when it premiered despite what some young, ignorant kids may think.

I love this part from it-

"This is minimum effort DVD releasing at its worst. Actually, it's worse than that. This is a DVD release so bad I'm almost certain it was intentionally designed to suck."

Only Lucas...only Lucas.

I guess you're right... it's a good point and really contrasts with ROTS perfectly!

Thanks for that!! Makes me want to watch them again!

Keep in mind it was 70MM 4.2 (L-C-R-S+2 boom channels), not true 5.1. This was the way for all the Star Wars films. Also for the first film, certain mixes such as the 35MM Dolby Stereo and 35MM mono mixes have different sound elements. The THX LaserDisc was the first one to have missing elements restored from all 3 mixes ("Close the blast doors!").

Yes, I know. I just didn't want to put his young brain on information overload. The case in point was that there are sound mixes present that bests the one offered with the bonus DVDs. 1977 wasn't the deep dark ages in terms of surround sound as he appears to think.
