They certainly look the best of the bunch.
Uh...actually it's the opposite.

George was so hellbent on filming digitally that he messed up. The cameras he used to shoot those films in were only capable of 1080p.

"But Blu-ray is 1080p, perfect!" you might say.

Not really...that detail we all love so much that comes out from the 2K (minimum these days for new transfers), 4K, and now even 8K from real 35mm film prints...doesn't exist for these films. 1080p is the best they will ever be, because that's how they were filmed.

Hopefully it will be acceptable for this release, but it was a huge error on George's part, because with real film we can keep scanning and upgrading it with better tech, but those two films will forever be stuck with early 2000's tech. Forever.

In terms of clarity and image, the original trilogy will likely be better on Blu as it is from a real film source, not "they just sent this to us brand new from the manufacturer a week before shooting" HD cameras where the tech is over a decade old at this point.

Considering the big FU Lucas gave UOT fanatics by releasing those letterboxed on DVD, he may lessen the OT PQ to match across the board for the whole saga. Imagine the *****ing and moaning that will come from the OT worshiping crowd on that. Have to admit, that will give me a bit of a chuckle.

I just hope the same thing doesn't happen that happened with MIB on BD... Sets & props painfully revealed to the point that I actually prefer the DVD. Trying to watch the opening scenes in the desert is now almost impossible. The fact that it's a set is beyond obvious. The cactus look incredibly fake, the ground doesn't look like ground... Hell, in a couple of shots, you can even tell the night sky is just a black sheet. Considering how much of the OT was small sets, I'm very afraid.

As stupid and shortsighted as everything this idiot has done since 1997. How pathetic Lucas' sense of consistency is. The six films that are being released seen as a whole (and individually, for that matter) are a grotesque joke; 30+ year old films with added CGI, the last two shot on video, meaning that there's not even consistency between the prequels themselves. Simple things as plastic suits done in CGI, ideas so stupid and forced coincidences so abysmal it's hard to believe.

In an unusual move for me, I am actually going to somewhat defend the PT on this one.

In addition to the points made by Dotpattern and Beast (both of whom made good points), in ANH, when Owen sees C3PO, he says, "I assume you're programmed for ettiquette and protocal".

So, we could make the assumption that even though he doesn't realize it is the same droid (since there are many similar droids out there), Owen's previous direct experience with C3PO is what made him immediately come to that conclusion.

And since it had been probably 20+ years since Owen last saw him and his outer coverings had changed, that he wouldn't immediately assume it to be the same droid.

Now, having said that and having defended the PT in that respect, IMO this is still the kind of thing (though a much lesser form of it) that could have and should been avoided as even being an issue in regards to how the PT was written. C3PO could have been written into the PT in a different manner in which he never would have met or interacted with Owen and his family at all what-so-ever, thus preventing this question from even coming up.

Absolutely correct. Droids were like tools/cars and were often sold or just plain broke down. The only thing I think that would make anyone remember C-3P0 was his voice, but even then can we really assume that his voice was exclusive to the one Anakin built? For all we know, Anakin got C-3P0 from a mail order kit, which would have been mass produced, and came with a variety of voices to chose from (sorta like I know my GPS is not the only one in the world with Mr. T as its voice). So, I see no real issue with this. While we may have to fill in few of the blanks on our own, I don't think this is something Lucas really expected people to stop and think about. They are just movies designed to entertain.

You do realise that Mr. T sits a room all day waiting for your car to move to give you directions?

He also pities the fools at rush hour....

Well, Jar Jar already makes an off-screen cameo in Return of the Jedi.

After the Empire is defeated and we're treated to the various worlds celebrating.... we hear a familiar sounding Gungan shouting "Weesa Free!" on Naboo.

Speaking of the tour of worlds in Return of the Jedi, would be interesting if they add Kashyyyk. But its probably not major enough.

On bluray at 1080p they will be stunning. No ones saying otherwise, but Lowery digital did an interview about cleaning up the OT and they confirmed that 1080p is what episodes 2&3 were filmed in and that the OT has the ability to look better. George was questioned about shooting them this way and he wanted to anyways because at the time it was the best. The thing is you can't make detail and resolution appear out of nothing so how the PT looks on 1080p bluray is the best they can look. I'm am talking detail and resolution not saturation and stuff like that. So if we ever move to a higher resolution home format. Episodes 2&3 will have to be upscaled because the original digital print resolution maxes out at 1080p. Its sad really.
