Politicians are greedy and only interested in their own means, so they could easily fall for the mother of all Jedi Mind tricks as they are mostly weak willed. The strong willed start to creat the rebellion in the deleted scene (which should have stayed in the movie).

Let's face it Sideous was a powerful dude. He even tricked Vader into thinking he killed his own wife and then was powerful enough to make Vader think "Your kid is still alive and I could have told ya that, but its cool. Just go bring your son to me." Guy was a master of the Mind F#$#. So, thinking he had the entire Senate under a mind trick is not really crazy.
I agree that everything worked way too conveniently for Palpatine. He's a Sith Lord, not God. LOL

Either that or he was just the smartest guy in the galaxy. The Senators, Jedi, aliens, etc. all seem very unintelligent to me. Even Yoda. And by the time Palpatine finally takes over, it feels like they were just asking for it.

Also remember he was strong enough and gaining enough power that he was able to blind the Jedi. Mace says something about the Jedi not being able to forsee or something like that in AOTC. IF Sideous was strong enough to do that, I am sure he was more than powerful mind trick the entire sentate. Basically, all he needs to do is speak and wave his hands, which he does do when talking to the senate to get them to follow along (much like Obi Wan in the OT does to the stormtrooper, "These aren't the droids you are looking for...").

He also mentions that the Jedi are arrogant, and he has perhaps grown strong enough to blind them to this fact. It is this arrogance that leads to their downfall. Mace leaves Skywalker behind and takes the keystone cops with him to arrest Palpatine. Yoda thinks he can take Sideous by himself and we all know how that worked out. Obi Wan fails to kill Anakin (if you have a guy that badly beaten, you FINISH the job). The Jedi fell victim to their own arrogance which is part of the dark side I think, and they may have been blind to it by Sideous the entire time.

This is just me playing Devil's Advocate with ya is all. Not offering up excuses for Lucas but just thinking why I think things worked out the way they did.

So, we are to assume you are buying the PT only, right? Or does Lucas have you by the balls too?

Sorry, but I can no longer argue with somebody who admits to being a douchebag.

Are you seriously going to let him watch Anakin burn??

That could prove very traumatic! It's a tough scene to watch for me, and tremendously heartbreaking.
One of the most powerful moments in cinematic history. Period.

We'll watch it chronologically, starting with number 4! But, I wasn't sheltered when I was growing up, and I think I'm OK! Of course, everyone does...

I've known for over 30 years.

The novelization (ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster) of Star Wars says "Senator Palpatine seized power and declared himself Emperor".

Oh yes, it's right up there with 'I know it was you, Fredo' and 'You're gonna need a bigger boat'.

While I totally agree that Lucas was making it up as he went along, he did say years ago that the prequels would be much more political and slow-going than the rock-em-sock-em originals. IIRC he said this in one of the interviews he did for Rolling Stone after the original film came out.

Had we liked Anakin, imagine how much more powerful that scene would have been.

I was watching some Star Wars thing on YouTube the other day and my uncle walked in and said, "Hey... That's the guy that ruined Star Wars!" He was referring to Hayden.

Of course, we all Hayden didn't ruin Star Wars. It was some other guy.

I have to go back and watch them again, but I'm also pretty sure that at some point in one of the OT movies (most likely ROTJ), somebody actually does refer to him as "Emperor Palpetine". Yes, more ofen than not, he is simply referred to as "The Emperor", but I'm pretty sure his name is specifically referenced at some point.

I was already familiar with that being his name long before the PT was around, and I was never one to read the books or get much into the EU stuff in general.

I thought maybe I vaguely remembered one of the Imperial officers referring to him as Emperor Palpatine, but I couldn't find it in ROTJ when I recently popped it in after reading your post. When he arrives at the Death Star, nobody says anything but Vader. I watched ROTJ many times as it was my favorite of the three when I was a kid, but I don't remember him having a name at all. Just "Emperor".

I sure feel silly now. That guy must be a very good actor to pull off such different characters because I had no idea. Aside from both being old, there are no similarities.

You might have thought it to be crap, but it seemed to get a lot of attention - enough to spawn the other two films in the OT, and a whole universe of books, toys, the PT, and a TV show.

I am not sure who put you in charge of security for the Star Wars Fan Club or if you were charged with rewriting membership benifits.

That is pretty funny - especially since you already said:

So Mr. Lucas has lots of artistic skills, yet his "crown jewels" are crap....
hmmmmm.....

Source? In reality, most people don't care becuase they never paid that much attention. The others who might prefer the SE of the OT, are also those who were born in the 90s and have no frame of reference for appreciation of the OT (and they are probably JarJar fans )

Reference comment above - either he is a creative genius or his movies are crap - which is it?
NONE of the movies are crap what i mean is when you compare the 2 pic wise the originals look like crap and that is probably why he will never put the originals on blu-ray.

According to your home theater gallery, he has you firmly by the balls. Others just want to be entertained for a couple hours.

Also, you seem quite certain that some Blu-ray.com members are kids, and use it as an insult. This, in itself, is immature and childish.

Nice toy collection, by the way.

LOL, take a gander at his home theater gallery/original trilogy museum.

Yea, but that does not work on everybody. Looking at how Luke failed to do that trick on Jabba, doing the 'mind trick' on the entire Senate dose not wash.

What I was wondering about that scene, is since his former 'best friend' was suffering so horribly, then why the hell did he not administer the final coup de gra?

I have the OT memorized. He's always just "The Emperor" or (in Vader's case "Master").

Well, the original 1977 novelization of the film isn't exactly "EU"

I had known it long before the PT came to theaters, despite the fact that I had only seen the OT previously.

Right on that.

One of my friends took his eight year old(I believe that was his age) to see RotS because he became a huge Star Wars fan due to the prequels being geared directly towards young children. So when he took him to see part III, they had to leave during the Emperor's 'Monster Mash' transformation scene as that was too much for him take, and then he ended up puking in bed later that night. And when he told me about this, I mentioned that they were lucky to get out of there before those later scenes showing major third degree burns.

Way to go there Mr. Lucas.
