Oh, please... :facesmack: 2 things:

1) He's got a blaster pointed at his face. It's kill or be killed. He's in hock to a gangster, so the boy's been around. At this point in the series, as originally written, we have no reason to think he won't take preemptive measures. In fact we see him surreptitiously unholster his blaster. We're all thinking, "Blast him, man!";

B) Han shooting first is essential for his character arc. All throughout the film, he's out for number one. His last name denotes this.

Okay, I lied. 3 things:

The shot just looks horrendous. Lucas' PC sensibilities painted himself into a corner in that, despite all his claims to the contrary, he originally did not script Greedo to shoot first. Look it up. Read it. The shot was never set up that way back in 1975. Now some 20 years later, Lucas doesn't feel good about one of his heroes shooting first (even though he wrote it that way), so he's got to fix it. Now that digital technology is all the rage, he can "fix" this shot to salve his conscience. Problem is there's no available footage of Greedo shooting first. 'Cause they never shot it back in the day. No problem, let's just digitally manipulate the two characters in this here two shot so that Greedo fires and Han jerks his head/dodges. It'll look fine, right? Hmmm. Right...

So yeah, if Lucas doesn't want to put the time and money into restoring the old cuts and releasing them, I'm going to support that choice. Much like I'm going to support any creator in that area. The newest versions are far superior to the old cuts anyway, so no big loss on that.

Not to mention as has been noted numerous times, the original cuts can't be seemlessly branched, so they require a completely seperate BLU for each one. So that ups the disc count and the price of the set. Even more if peope want the '97 SE cuts of the films as well.

If people want to watch those versions, they're available. Lucas hasn't sent Stormtroopers to destroy those LD, VHS, and DVD copies.
No, Lucas might have the right to make changes to his films, not disputing that at all (even though Empire and Jedi weren't directed by him). But he has an obligation to preserve the original films the way they originally were, not just for the people who want them that way, but for film buffs, film students and for the preservation of film history as well, especially since those versions got him where he is today.

Just about every other director is doing it, Spielberg did it with Close Encounters (and I'm sure he'll do the same with E.T. when it's finally released on blu), Coppola did it with Apocalypse Now, Scott did it with Blade Runner, and hell, even Friedkin did it recently with The Exorcist. Lucas on the other hand is the only one who still thinks he's above everything.

And how are the newer versions superior to the original cuts anyway? Sorry dude, but spiffier and more modern looking does not mean better. And if you actually buy into the whole "It complete's Lucas' vision" nonsense then I almost feel sorry for you. As somebody else pointed out yesterday, the revisions have nothing to do with Lucas completing his vision, but with his own obsessive compulsive tweaking. And it's not just Star Wars, he's done the same with THX-1138 and American Graffiti.

Anyone else's heart skip a beat, and have to catch their breath when they saw the Original Star Wars Opening Crawl again on that splendid documentary they put on the Star Wars Collector's DVD!

I was 6 then, waay back in 1977! I remember actually reading the words too!

Memories!

Now my 5-year-old sings any Star Wars tune he hears!

Dun dun dun dun! DUN!
Dun dun dun DUN dun!
dun dun dun DUN dun!

I think the worst thing about not having the UOT on the Blu-ray September set is knowing they'll be another set in the not to distant future. And that means double-dipping on what's probably a lot of BD owners most expensive purchase.

And all this talk about them been on other formats doesn't really help the people who want to see them in HD. Maybe we can just remember them? But I think my memories are only in SD and some of them are black and white and quite frankly disturbing....

I remember seeing Return of the Jedi in my 6th grade class on scrunchy VHS!

Is THAT disturbing?!?!

Edit: Did originally see it in the theater first though! Back in 1983! VHS was an HBO bootleg, I think...for 6th graders! LOL

The original crawl (the one that does NOT say "Episode IV: A New Hope" on it) is also the one used on the DVD of the original version of the movie (the non-anamorphic 'bonus disc' that comes with the individual DVD release of 'A New Hope). I thought that was pretty cool when I first watched that DVD. To my knowledge, all previous home video releases included the Episode IV in the title... at least all of the ones that I had seen. Not that it was a big deal either way, but it was still pretty cool.

It WAS a big deal...believe me.

Imagine my (and everyone else's) confusion when we saw the 1981 re-release of Star Wars for the first time, and "Episode IV" was there!

Everybody was like, what does "IV" mean?!?!

Who knew it was actually a number -- at the age of 10!

LOL

Yeah...sorry.

It was a LONG time ago, in a Movie Theater Far, Far Away...

The Roman Numeral thing was strange to us then though...it was like, what is with the "V" and now the "IV"?!?!

I meant that it wasn't a big deal to do me either way which version of the crawl would be on the "original version" DVD. The fact that it was the one without the Epsiode IV was just a little extra cool. But if it had included it, I wouldn't have been upset.

Maybe Beast forgot or didn't know that Glenn A. Larson signed off on the new Galactica. Leaving personal taste aside, Beast is clearly cherry picking what works of art can be altered by their creators. Beast's post read like one of the Classic Trilogy defenders who are often on the receiving end of his ire.
I liked the original Battlestar Galactica Series. That doesn't make me out of my mind. The new series has never appealed to me, so I don't care for it. I didn't say it shouldn't bear the name, I said it wasn't worthy of the name. It's not as good as the original, and isn't "My" Battlestar Galactia. You guys are welcome to enjoy it all you like. But it's not hypocrisy to not like the new series, or to vastly prefer the old series to the re-imagined revamp. I'm not cherry picking anything, I'm just saying that for me....regardless of Glenn A. Larson's signing off, I prefer the old series.

Vader can't use force lightning, due to the missing limbs and his life support systems.

Bingo. Han WOULD of and DID shoot first. Hes a gambler, a loner, almost a mercenary. Sure, his character changes throughout the films and thats whats supposed to happen. His character is developed as the story unfolds. Thats what the intent was.

Quick question not sure if its been answered before but is the new ROTJ scene being included into the film or will it be added onto the supplemental disc?
