I don't think Mace Windu messed up Palpatine's face during their fight. During their duel, Palpatine was teasing Windu the whole time like a little b i t c h (Windu was no way a match for the more powerful Emperor), pretending to be losing as a way to get Anakin to turn. I think Palpatine's regular non-scary face was just a disguise...

That's fine. I'm sure they despise fans like yourself, so it would all even out at the end of the day.

It was the Darth Force lightning, it fried his life support systems. Vader would have lived otherwise.

Palpatine wasn't blasting Luke with full force lightning during most of the scene.

He was torturing him instead. At least up until "Now young Skywalker, you will die."

Considering how good he was at plotting, given his rise to power and manipulation of everyone in the Prequels and even his OT plots, that was one of his first real mistakes. Since torturing Luke instead of killing him immediately gave Vader the necessary time to decide whether or not to turn on Palpy.

He was probably fully confident that his apprentice of about 20 years wouldn't risk his own life to save a son he had only known for about 3-4 years and sparsely during those 3-4 years at that.

Even though both Palpatine and Anakin succeeded in their mission to destroy the jedi and rule they also suffered greatly:

PALPATINE: Having become disfigured beyond belief having to forever hide behind his cowl and hide his face from others.

ANAKIN: Being severely burned and scarred beyond recognition having to forever live inside of a life support system forever.

It's like that old saying what goes around comes around and boy did it come around to them.

Also, StarWars.Com states that Palpy's appearance was caused by the reflected Force Lightning.

"The Jedi eventually discovered Palpatine's Sith leanings and confronted the Chancellor. Sidious lashed out with blinding speed, brandishing a previously hidden lightsaber blade in a sudden strike that killed all of the Jedi Masters Mace Windu had assembled to arrest the Chancellor. With Anakin Skywalker's help, Sidious was able to defeat Mace, though he was severely scarred by the reflected power of his dark side lightning. To conceal his disfigured visage, Sidious returned to his simple Sith robes."

"Skywalker witnessed a stunning sight: the Chancellor, cornered, with Windu looming over him with his lightsaber blade extended. Palpatine unleashed a torrent of Sith lightning at the Jedi Master, but Windu was able to deflect it back at the Chancellor. The evil energies twisted Palpatine's face as they flowed through him, scarring and disfiguring his once handsome features. His eyes burned yellow, his voice grew ragged and deep, and he became a well of dark side energies."

It was as Luke said that his overconfidence was his weakness he was so overconfident that he could turn Luke he also thought that Vader was not that strong enough to stop him.

Also Vader picked the emperor up from behind so as to avoid his force lightning he knew that if he went head on that Palpatine would hit him in the blink of an eye also by picking him up Palpatine also was hit by his own lightning trying to stop Vader.

Great, there you go throwing logic and citations into this....

It makes perfect sense, and I can't believe there are even other theories out there. Seemed pretty cut-and-dry to me.

Well, see, now we know this explanation was full of B.S. While Palpatine wasn't a horribly ugly person, I don't think most people would go around calling him handsom in the first place (before his scarring).

I dunno. He's no male model, but he wasn't ugly by any stretch of the imagination. I'd concur with handsome.

It depends upon whether you think the scarring was caused by "force lightning" or whether you think the scarring was caused by use of "the dark side" and/or by hate. I always felt that Palpatine's hatred of the Jedi and his own use of the force lightning caused the damage to his own body, which is why Luke was spared such damage. Or maybe it was just karma.

I always thought that was odd myself, Luke did suffer physical damage later in life in his training with the dark side of the Force though, didn't he?

We have to factor in the fact that the lightning was also being reflected by Mace's saber directly into Palpy's face. Where as it was cascading all over Luke's body. As for physical damage suffered by Luke, the EU did establish that the lightning had calcified his skeleton.

Also thought it was odd that while the Force Lightning did blow Windu off the Chancellor's tower and against another building, it didn't seem to scar his body on the way down.

It's funny to see the people who think Sidious was throwing the fight versus those that think Mace actually was beating him. Regardless of the official word, a lot of people are still in both sides of that.

I think Palpatine and Windu were pretty evenly matched, also their lightsaber techniques gave Windu the advantage as his all-out offensive style was more than a match for Palpatine's own. Palpatine simply held off Windu just enough to make it look like Windu was doing all the wrong things when Skywalker landed so they could kill Windu together and turn Anakin to the dark side.

Mace had his lightsaber to deflect the bolts BUT i believe Palpatine was purposely waiting for Anakin to make his decision to turn.
