I wonder if Lucas ever intended to explain where the characters from the PT are during the OT:

1)WATTO
2)Poggle
3)JarJar
4)Captain Typho
5)Captain Tanaka
6)All of Padme's family
7)Mas Amedda

Are they discussed in the books? I'd guess that given the size of the Star Wars "universe" and ability to travel etc.... it's just sort of assumed that the Ewoks are just building wooden horses etc... during the PT, and JarJar is doing whatever JarJar does during the OT

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but is George going to replace the Yoda puppet in Episode I with a CGI Yoda? Also what others changes are confirmed?

He is quite fond of the puppet Yoda in the OT so I doubt it.

Is it that.... or is it the fact that he can pretty much change things here and there in the PT, and they're often seen as "improvements" but when he messes with the three that people typically care about the most he gets chastised

(for the record, I don't want to see a CGI Yoda in the OT)

I did hear that he's interesting in tweaking OT Yoda (movement, facial expression, etc.) but that's hollow ground so if he does indeed plan on it then he should tread lightly.

What am I saying, it's George Lucas. He's already jumped the shark with all the changes. Don't be surprised when he removes the dialogue concerning the Force surrounding all of us and has CG Yoda explain to Luke that midichlorians give each Jedi a power level.

remember the blu-rays will be THE CLOSEST to his vision and that is confirmation enough that we will see stuff changed.

Dude, enough with the RLM-style assumptions. Where is it said that the transmitter is or isn't proximity related? Maybe Watto's got a remote detonator somewhere? If the boy don't come back from his day at the races: KA-BOOM!

As for Shmi not being freed earlier, it's made explicitly clear in Phantom Menace that the Republic have no influence in the Outer Rim. Even their currency is worthless. The Jedi aren't in the day-to-day business of freeing slaves either, with Qui-Gon freeing the gifted Anakin being the exception that proves the rule.

Lucas launched us head-first into the Star Wars universe with the original film, giving us some info in the title crawl and then BAM - we're right into it. His mistake was trying the same trick with the prequels, as those films were made to fill in the gaps of the OT and I think people expected an orgy of self-serving dot-connecting rather than the, er, "freeform" stories that we actually got.

Lucas didn't have to explain everything away in the original movies, we just got swept along with it, and I honestly think that he expected audiences to be able to do the same thing with the prequels. Sure, the story is more convoluted than the simplistic OT and definitely needed more work - although the structures of the actual films are VERY similar - yet the bare bones are there for anyone willing to actually dig for them. Heck, most of the groundwork of Phantom Menace which the RLM review complained so very much about not understanding is explained right there in the crawl. But in this golden age of nit-picking - brought to you by the Internet™ - people obsess about the smallest of details (visible poison gas = WORST MOVIE EVER etc) which leaves them unwilling or unable to step back and see the bigger picture.

George is of course guilty of this himself, which is part of the problem. He's a perfectionist who's constantly tweaking, updating and revising his work whether he made it 35 years or 35 minutes ago (a holdover from his early days as a documentary maker). In a way, these movies were made by the ultimate nit-picking film-maker for the ultimate nit-picking audience, and instead of satisfying the latter it created a perfect storm of fanboy angst that will be remembered for as long as the name of Star Wars is known.

I know I'm tying myself in all sorts of knots with this post, but it's been on my mind for a while and I just wanted to vomit it out in all its glory.

Yup, dude's got an obession with all things taking off/landing related. He even added that superfluous Vader/Star Destroyer sequence to Empire.

I always thought Lucas was a 'race car' kind of guy, ya know? His first film had a lot of sexy shots of 1960s cars and the big moment in THX-1138 was the chase at the end. Guy just is fascinated with cars and movement like that. Even Luke and Anakin are good at being mechanics/pilots. Hell, Han Solo spends most of his time in Empire working on the Falcon. Lucas is a product of the 1950s for sure! I think that crossed over into all of his films. To be honest, I would not be surprised at all to learn he was a NASCAR fan (god help us).

Anakin may be mechanically inclined but that was just part of his character, I think Lucas is more a fan of tinkering. Someone who's such a huge fan of technology probably wouldn't have so many essential characters who use a mystical power like the Jedi and the Sith do.

I dunno about NASCAR but he loves his Formula 1. It's no coincidence that the podracer engines sound very similar to F1 cars.

He is a HUGE fans of racing. Always was! I see him often during F1 races on TV walking around the cars before the race. He almost got kill at the age 0f 17 or 18 (I don't feel like looking it up) with a small fast car he had back then. Even today he can be seen in many celebrity races.

There was nothing stopping Padme from freeing Shmi and though Republic currency was worthless on Tatooine, they could've traded her freedom in exchange for something like a spaceship. Though the Jedi and the Republic are not in the habit of freeing slaves, you would think they would have been willing to make an exception for the mother of a boy who risked his life for them in a pod race and then later destroyed the Trade Federation droid control ship thus effectively ending the battle on Naboo and saving thousands of lives. Padme, Naboo, the Jedi, and the Republic REALLY couldn't have done SOMETHING to help Anakin's mother for all he did for them?

Why would he? There's no need to go into technical details with Luke about the force. He's just a dumb blonde from the outer rim.
