I'm glad the box art won't just be black or blue. I don't think it should have the floating heads either but.. meh. Something that says, "We don't need pictures because you already know what Star Wars is. You're going to buy this because it's f'n awesome because it's Star Wars in 1080p."

How wide are those 21:9 TV's?

chip: got the original 56" version.

dynamo: it's an LCD set, so chances of screenburn/IR are slim to none. I don't watch much TV, but when I do it's usually sport, which is typically framed very loosely and can be cropped/stretched to fit the screen without incident (watching The Masters right now actually, looks gorgeous).

1.33/1.78/1.85 movies I watch in their proper ratios which means borders down the sides (equivalent 16:9 screen size would be roughly 44"). I always watched 1.33 movies/TV shows with side borders on my previous 16:9 TV, so this is nothing new for me.

But as I said, I'm not a big TV watcher and I bought this set precisely for the unique movie-watching experience that it offers. My collection is skewed towards big-budget nonsense anyways, which means lots and lots of 2.39 movies. And I can't wait to get the Star Wars and Superman BDs running on this bad boy.

I watch film from all eras, and the pillarboxing is too severe on 1.33 material. Having to put up with 1.78 and 1.85 material pillarboxed would be annoying as well. I'm an OAR guy so stretching is out of the question (and HATE HATE HATE when channels like TBS or History stretch SD material).

Gawd, yes.

It might not be as objectionable if TBS at least did a halfway decent job but they're absolutely terrible. I have two Sony 1080i CRT rear projectors whose internal scalers do a better job of stretching than they do.

(I honestly don't think that's an exaggeration either).

Blu-rays are not 16:9 Anamorphic, they are 16:9 straight.

I honestly can't believe it took this long for someone to correct that...

There's no such thing as anamorphic on Blu-ray, they are straight one-to-one pixels in a 16:9 resolution...

The 21:9 set (assuming native 1920 pixels across) is simply cropping off the black video (bars) on the top/bottom of the image. No zooming or 'technical-jiggery-pokery' going on, just cropping off the unused black area.

I hope no part at all. I have never used BD live, and I don't ever intend to do so.

I just want my bonus content on a separate disc, or in the case of this set on separate discs.

Since we know almost nothing so far about the set, who knows. But the Clone Wars sets haven't really utilized it.

Well most people know what I meant. Across isn't the problem. The point is that the black bars are part of the picture they aren't in 2.35:1 straight so even though the newest Philips has a 2560 x 1080p resolution the 1920 x 1080p (less on the vertical if you account for the letterboxing) isn't quite an exact match. So some technical jiggery-pokery as afoot. They will look superb though.

I don't know if they would even bother doing anything with BD Live. A lot of studios seem to be shying away from that now. Even Disney, a company that was previously very gung-ho about it, really hasn't done much with it in their more recent releases.

I think it's a feature that not very many people ever used. Frankly I never really saw the appeal of it myself. I think I tried it out once very briefly on one disc and then never again.

About the only really useful aspect of it was when online chats with the filmmaker or whatever were arranged via BD Live shortly after release, and even that is only a one time thing, so it's not a feature that you can repeatedly use over and over again.

Frankly I think they'd be better off not using it. BD Live often tends to be an excuse to not put extra features on a disc (which otherwise could have been put on it) and instead make them available online via BD Live. I say, if they are going to give us access to these special features, then just put them on the disc! And I don't need to be able to chat with random people/friends during the movie or any kind of dumb crap like that.

Star Wars + BD Live = BAD!

I agree and disagree. If they want more room for picture quality and such, I guess I wouldn't mind if all bonus features were on blu ray live. But not everyone has that.

Well, that's why there's 3 bonus discs of extras. The movie discs will likely just have the movie, commentaries, and little else.

Yeah, I agree with Beast. We already have 3 discs dedicated to bonus content, so there will likely be little on the discs other than the movies themselves, and any bonuses (i.e. commentary) that go with them.

I'd rather movies just put extras on an extra disc if they need more room for the movie on the main disc. BD Live is a joke. Why would I want my extras put there when at any time they could take away access to them?

If it isn't physical, you don't really own it. That's my thing. I completely agree with your sentiment.
