What would be so bad about it? I do not get it!
There would likely be a lot less complaining, but I think the argument would still exist for preservation's sake. I think a lot of the UOT fans (like myself) simply do not like the changes in the Special Edition, and for us it significantly hurts the films.

I can't speak for everyone, but I think the Final Cut of Blade Runner is fantastic-- THAT is how you alter your film. I also feel it was great and important that they restore the other cuts along with it. But if I was being perfectly honest-- if they didn't remaster the older versions, I wouldn't be particularly angry about it, 'cause I prefer the Final Cut.

Even the Indy set-- they did some minor, extremely subtle tweaking to fix a couple fx issues. Couldn't care less about that. I didn't see an online petition to get the unaltered versions of those out.

The problem with the Special Editions are they AREN'T subtle. A lot of the alterations are extremely in your face, and entire sequences are added in or completely changed. To top it all off, the changes are for the worse in many people's eyes.

So basically what I'm saying is that the clamor for the UOT is just as much about dissatisfaction with the Special Editions as much as it is about preserving film history and the version one grew up with and all that.

That would mean George would release the original versions .

If one was at least 15 at the time, you might remember more, but that would make you at least 49. It's time to not care so much.

The 'Special Editions' did not start coming out until 1997.

And by then a large majority of it's fans had seen these films hundreds of times, and the ONLY noticeable change to the film was the addition of the 'A New Hope' title change.

It's pretty cool that the newer generation is getting it's versions on the set, but not so for the ones who started it all, and made it possible for the prequels to even exist.

Sure, but there is only one Star Wars Saga, and it's divine.

SW fans will always find something to complain about. That seems to be their air supply.

I recently saw/heard the old Jabba the Hut song in the From SW to Jedi documentary, and I thought it was perfectly horrid, and I mean really, truly horrid. Luckily, GL will never put it back in. The new song and aliens are a billion times better. The rest of your suggestions sound good to me, although that's nothing terribly new either.

I'd also like a CG Jabba and Yoda (Ep.III) in the OT.

You will. You will.

A few days ago, a friend came over and we talked about SW, and he has only seen the PT, and just bits and pieces of the OT. He said that he loves the PT, but the old ones look way too old for him, and that he wished that they were like the PT.
I told him that the story is still good, and that is what matters in the end.

I can see how some of the changes were probably uneccessary and how people can feel a bit upset at it all, but this hatred of Lucas, for me, just goes a bit too far. I believe that whilst much has changed, the essence has remained, Star Wars is still Star Wars, although again, one is entitled to one's opinions. I love the films, I will never say I hate a particular version, so on that note I say, bring on September 2011.

Did anyone go to Star Wars in Concert at the Hollywood Bowl this weekend?

Apparently, they showed clips from the films and apparently the quality of the clips was stunning and that you couldn't distinguish between Prequels and Originals...

A tweet from Scott Mendelson:

If footage shown during Star Wars In Concert is any indiication, blu rays are going to be stunning. Can't tell prequel clips from originals.

found this on youtube, Vader doesn't seem to have a pink lightsaber:

forget my previous post, I don't think it's blu-ray's quality, if you watch the end of the imperial march, we can still see Vader's lightsaber (pink) inside Luke's lightsaber:

Just the name of the movie and its corresponding roman numeral in a light blue. This could just be temporary because the disc art hasn't been finalized, but we'll see. When I have access to a scanner I will scan it unless someone else beats me to the punch.
I present to you the crappy disc art! Glad to see Lucasfilm is going all out with this release.

As long as the picture and sound quality of the films themselves are top notch, I will be a happy camper. However, what has been released thus far hasn't been encouraging.

I suspect the reason that there isn't any disc art is because it's either temporary or that because the discs will be present in three different sets they've chosen to go with a neutral design which will fit in all three.

The disc art is not the real deal yet and we won't know what it will look like until comic-con comes next month in July. By then we will know which deleted scenes and the other stuff from disc 7 and 8 will be on the blu-rays and what store's will have an exclusives collectible box that holds all of the blu-ray's.

I'm a fan of nice disc art and all the little details, but really, when it comes down to it, we won't be watching the discs. I think the silver looks fine though.

But isn't that the same thing as what we're doing here with Star Wars?
As for CG Jabba and Yoda, I for one am glad that apparently even old George himself has more restraint with altering the OT than you do-- so far.
Yes I did. I have said it many times before:
In principle, I am all for a release of all versions of SW.
It's the attitude of the "fans" that has made me change my mind.
They have brought so much negativity upon SW, that I feel I have to protest that more than anything else.
Does this make any sense to you?

Indeed, not exactly mind-blowing, but we don't know for sure whether this is final or not yet, so I'll wait until an official announcement.
The DVDs had great disc artwork, so here's hoping.

The edition of Blade Runner that was shown to one of my college film classes was the original theatrical edition not the Director's Cut/Final Edit. While you can argue the merits of the directors cut, it wasn't the same film audiences saw in 1982. It is important to study art and understand the time period it was produced in (i.e. Hollywood System, The Silent Era, Blockbuster Era). Kind of like art has Art Deco, Georgorian, and so on. You can say the 1997/2004 Trilogy is a product of the Digital Era as the changes made to the Star Wars films were impossible to do in the Blockbuster Time Period.

So, this is why so many people get upset because a piece of art is being altered and removed from its actual time period of production and by doing so parts of said film are lost forever (and Star Wars is a pretty important piece of Hollywood history that we are discussing here). Like removing some of the Mona Lisa's oil painting and using a Magic Marker to clean it up (of course that is an extreme comparison).

Anyway, I enjoy discussing this intelligently with you, and if this post gets moved its cool.
Believe it or not, I agree with you. Good post.

The thing is that the SW saga consists of 6 episodes now, and due to the 16 year jump between the two trilogies, the OT sort of had to be "modified" to a certain extent, or else they wouldn't be one whole saga.

I, for one, as a fan of all the SW films, just need the latest versions, but fans of only the OT should get the UOT, at least if they are civil about it.

I don't have a problem with the disc art as presented in that ad. I'm just looking forward to my Star Wars Blu-Ray marathon come September.
