The absolute truth is - the Vader in the OT and the Vader Lucas invented 20 years later are totally different characters. Personally the worst decision for me was to make the prequels all about him - first, I don't think anyone was clamoring for it besides Lucas (I never once as a kid thought - "Gee I wish they'd make a movie about Vader as a whiny child!), and second, it basically just ruined the effect of the character.
However the PT had to be about him.

If you recall Lucas made the rough outlines for all the existing movies before Star Wars Episode IVeven was made. He started with Episode IV because that was what he thought was the best one to "sell" to the studios and public so the movie could be made. He himself did not foresee the success of SW, but knew That Episode I probably would not sell enough to lead to more of his whole vision being made.

It is ultimately a story/saga of redemption. Vader's redemption.

Now given that at the point of Episode IV is at the point where Vader is already in need of redemption. It makes perfect sense the PT would show how he got there in the first place.

To keep in line that the underlying theme of redemption the PT needed to be about Vader.

There was a Time magazine article saying there was apparently supposed to be 12 Star Wars films. That would've been interesting to see. But now we've got the 6 and a no doubt awesome Blu-ray release in September.

lol. 4 trilogies might've been quite something. Still, Star Wars is Star Wars, there's always gonna be arguments over something.

I definitely agree that the decision of dropping Han in the PT was an excellent one. I never got what was so special about Boba, or Han for that matter.
Different tastes, I guess.
How is he a billion times cooler? Why because he got more "action" screen time? Boba was 100 times cooler and he didnt even have to do anthing..why? Because we never saw his face!!!! Less is more...less is more.

Old news...Lucas himself said all the way through the 80's that there were 12 chapters and the only two characters to be in all 12 were the driods. In the last film it would be them telling the story through thier eyes. Of course Lucas has lied, flip flopped his way though the last 3 decades.

I know it's old news. 30+year old news. I still think the other trilogies may have been interesting, but I'm happy with what we have.

Not according to this article. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...915986,00.html. "Star Wars Corp. will make Star Wars II and the ten, count 'em, ten other planned sequels"

there is an article somewhere by Lawrence Kasdan that explains what the basic plots of the movies. apparently he left the movies because Lucas wanted to tie things up in Jedi instead of making more of them. the original ideas wouldn't be possible now since Jedi screwed things up. Maybe they need to go the DC route and do animated films to further the saga?

As for the whole Anakin/Darth Vader thing, don't buy it. if he turned his back on being Anakin, why would he try and turn Luke in Empire instead of killing him? if he was truly just Vader, Luke would have been billed in Empire and the shuttle would never have been allowed to land on Endor in Jedi. he may not have been restricted by his Jedi training anymore but it doesn't mean he rejected them totally. Anakin was still there, he just didn't let him out too often and not in obvious ways.

You're buying into the retroactive history that Lucas created. It's flat-out not true.

Lucas did NOT plan out some grand saga about Vader's redemption years in advance. As late as 1979, Vader and Anakin were still two separate characters. This is a fantastic read, for anyone interested in how the story actually developed:

Cool, I will check that book out. I'm a hugh SW fan, but was severely dissapointed by Lucas going back in time to make us feel better about Anakin.
We had great characters already established, and there was so many ways to have moved forward...

It's the same thing as why I didn't like that they tied in Chewbacca, and Boba Fett....less is more, it's good to leave some stuff to our imaginations. It's just personal preference that I know probably some people disagree with. Some prefer to see what Chewbacca did earlier in life. I think it's silly that he was a decorated soldier and then becomes Han Solo's side kick.

A completely different topic - but just curious - does anyone have any doubt that GL always intended Darth Vader to be Luke's father when ANH was made? I know Vader means father so that supports that it was planned all along. But then there's Obi Wan explaining that Vader killed Luke's father and then him backtracking later in the OT. I wonder if they just came up with that idea in between ANH and ESB.

Yes.

Obi-Wan:
"I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did."

I think one of the earlier EU books told a version of Han's backstory with Chewie. Apparently, Han was once an Imperial soldier, who saved Chewie from being shot by his superiors. Because of that, he was thrown out of the military, and Chewie pledged a "life debt" to Han for his aid. This could also explain why Han knows about various Empire procedures, and his decision to work as a smuggler.
