It would be nice to have the Original Theatical Releases of each movie and not the doctored movies.
I have no problem with modified movies, the Directors version of THE ABYSS and BRAZIL benefit from this, but I prefer the original version of STAR WARS, the one without the totally ignorant "Episode four" at the beginning. |

So it appears there are some interviews/documentaries on those discs as well. Well, technically interviews cut with behind the scenes footage, etc. But really, what was Empire of Dreams? Interviews cut with behind the scenes footage, deleted footage, and scenes from the film. Hmmmmm..... |

On the OT bonus disc, "Empire of Dreams" is about 2.5 hours. Plus there are picture galleries, bloopers, and three other featurettes on that disc about the characters, creatures, the legacy of Star Wars, the evolution of the lightsaber, etc. Not to mention just about all the OT trailers minus a small handful. About 4 hours total. The three prequel DVD sets have bonus discs that are pretty loaded. Each one has a roughly 60-minute documentary on the respective film plus other docs, webisodes, featurettes, galleries, and trailers. I'm not even a big prequel fan but the bonus DVD's are worth watching and owning. About 4 hours for each bonus DVD, if I remember correctly. They claim 6 hours of bonus features for each prequel set, but I think 2 hours of that may be from the commentary. Either way, 4 hours of bonus features for each film, not even including the commentary, is pretty good. Easy way to get them cheap: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Wars-Prequel-Trilogy-DVD/dp/B001FVKUAI/ref=sr_1_3?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1309140549&sr=1-3 OT bonus DVD if you're region free: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Bonus-Disc/dp/B000FAGGWQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1309140659&sr=1-1 When you consider the four DVD's worth of special features I mentioned above, not to mention all of the other stuff that exists, that explains why some, including me, are so disappointed in the extras on this release. Blu-ray's capacity gave them the opportunity to load this set up. A BD-50 can hold 20+ hours of SD material and a BD-25 can hold 9+ hours. Most, if not all, of the past special features were in SD. The "Documentaries" disc that they're giving us wasted 221 minutes, almost four hours, on the 501st, Spoofs, and "Star Wars Tech" from the History Channel. They could have left those off Disc 9 and gave us "Empire of Dreams" and "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga" which account for 216 minutes. An even swap, so to speak. There were four original documentaries on the OT. They're giving us three but leaving off the fourth, FSWTJ. Puzzling, especially when you consider that 40 minutes of it is exclusive material not present in the other three. For simplicity's sake, they could have even left Disc 9 as they have it now. Add a Disc 10 that includes "The Beginning", "From Puppets to Pixels", "Within a Minute", "Empire of Dreams", "From Star Wars to Jedi", and maybe even "George Lucas: A&E Biography", "Star Wars: Music by John Williams(BBC)", "Star Wars: A Musical Journey", "Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed", and "The Mythology of Star Wars", since they're all likely SD, and that would have substantially improved this release. Considering that they're all likely SD, a BD-50 would have worked fine. Call the disc "Star Wars Documentaries II". Don't get me wrong. I'm buying it. I'm just really disappointed in the bonus features. There was so much available to them that could have been on this set. Disc 8 should be interesting though, along with disc 7 for prequel fans. God did not create youtube. I think youtube should be shut down because they break tons of copyright laws. they have stuff in there that should never be free...like the holiday special. I paid for the tape like 15 years ago at the convention. and the quality of youtube video sucks compared to DVD and BD. Youtube is for just browsing..

It's overlong and does not manage to tell an interesting story about the 501st. I think the only ones who are actually going to care about this are the 501st themselves. |

You mean Steven Speilberg? The same Steven Spielberg that had THREE versions of Close Encounters of the Third Kind? The same amount of A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi editions. I own the 30th Anniversary Edition of Close Encounters, and it includes THREE versions of the film. Theatrical, Special Edition and Director's Cut. For those of you new to Planet Earth, Spielberg and Lucas are good friends... |

but it's a whole other world, to join them you have to dress up in a stormtrooper or some other guard. I DONT DRESS UP! I quit that on my 13th halloween. Unless it's halloween night and I go out to party. The guys in the 501st have a military attitude about them that I don't like. and how come jedi or sith cannot be in the 501st? I see a lot of problems with the group as they are bias. Basically, if you don't work a convention and put on a costume you aren't one of them..and why would I want to work during a convention anyway? Zzzz. |

back on topic, the 501st doc is yet another example of just cramming anything on the Blu-Ray that people will have already seen before the set is even released. With so many things locked away in the archives they could have come up with things a lot better. It looks like the 9th disc is a pretty big waste of time. You can bet the old docs are just straight from the old laserdisc masters too.

Anyway, I too am pretty disappointed in the 9th disc of special features. I don't care to learn about a group of adults playing 'dress up' and if I want to watch Robot Chicken or the Family Guy I can go on youtube/Hulu. Good times. Last edited by Deciazulado; 06-27-2011 at 01:33 PM. |
