you know, it is funny - been away for over a week and nothing has changed, people still whining about him not releasing the original versions. accept it and move on - he has no interest in the original versions anymore and if they ever do hit bluray, it is just going to be the same version as we already have on vhs/dvd. just accept it.

Now the LOTR extended box set is 15 discs and the theatrical is 6 discs, so that is a 21 disc set just for 2 versions of 3 movies so a big Star Wars saga set isn't so stupid now is it? Last edited by adywan; 07-04-2011 at 06:36 PM. |

It's too bad seamless branching (and storage space) isn't advanced enough to enable switching back and forth between the versions in live time. It would be fun to see how he increased the complexity of special effects over time and whether each individual scene plays emotionally better with or without all the added stuff. And by the way, why do you have separate 35/70mm versions listed above for The Empire Strikes Back but not for Episode IV or VI? They all had both 35mm Dolby SVA and 70mm Dolby 6-track mag "baby boom" editions released. And while we're on that topic, there's always been a bit of hypocrisy because the fans who claim to only want the originals wouldn't want either the original 35mm Dolby SVA soundtrack (which has mono surround and almost no separation between adjacent channels) or the 70mm Dolby 6-track mag configuration because the L Le C Ce R mono Surround configuration is inconsistent with the modern home channel layout and it also has mono surround. Do they really want the surround in mono or do they want a 5.1 or 6.1 remix? Or maybe they really want mono because that's how most people saw Episode IV. There were only 8 70mm prints of Star Wars on opening week and they were all in California, New York and New Jersey. And not that many theatres were equipped for Dolby SVA until AFTER the release of Star Wars. Last edited by ZoetMB; 07-04-2011 at 07:17 PM. |

In closing I will say that Lucas created this mess himself. By releasing and letting an entire generation and a half fall in love with his creations. Then by waiting twenty years to change things and releasing his prequel trilogy and then changing the OT yet again to fit inferior films. Nobody that loves and only supports the UOT that I know of has ever attacked the prequels for existing nor even Lucas for making his changes. Sure we may not have liked the new films because we feel they sucked but it is not because they exist. I could care less about the changes he makes to HIS films as long as history is perserved for an entire generation so we can enjoy his vision that he presented to us and continuted to share with us for over twenty years.
This whole situation is another creation by the master himself. Let's see if he still believes in what he said in 1988. Somehow I just know that he became that very thing that other directors from his era did and still fight against. We the original fans will just have to be content to get what we want by other means until the man comes to his senses and realizies just how important preserving film history is. I personally think he is going about it the wrong way. If he would just release the originals in HD (or let someone else like Criterion pay for the restoration) and do it this whole mess would just go away......as so many of you have said its a small niche (just like criterion fans) UOT fans would be happy and go away quietly, but by taking the stance he has it will never go away, in fact I think it will just get louder and louder as time marches on. No matter how hard he tries he can not make a whole set of films or generation of fans dissappear and go away..... Peace! |
