If they're going to add a 7.1 mix to Star Trek, then they'd better do it to Star Wars. I know different studio, different expectations. Does Fox even have a single movie with a 7.1 mix?

Watch the 'making of' on the DVDs, where he clearly states that he thought of a cool way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of 'A New Hope', so he decided to re-release them in the theaters, have some of the special/visual effects fixed that had really made him sick ever since its release, and also to see whether the things he had in mind for the PT were actually feasible, and to bring them more up to date for modern audiences...many reasons as usual.

Yes, but did he make an archival copy of the original version during the restoration or does that version simply no longer exist?

I think they original copies are still around but they just never been re-worked on, remastered if you wish and he won't be doing any work on them either since he as no wish in releasing them. If you buy the DVD release from 4-5 years ago you can see what they look like. I am not sure again but I believe even these were done from the Laserdisc master and not the original. In the bonus features of the Special Editions, there is a few mention on how bad the original negative looked after 20 years. I guess it would be in need of a lot of restoration in order to be release on Blu-ray and he won't really bother doing it since it's already been re-work for the Special Edition.

In a case like this, maybe Criterion or some other independent company could pick them up and work on them and release them but Star Wars belong's to Lucas and the chances of a deal like that happening are none to 0%

Did you read the post?

Some of the effects in the OT made him sick to the stomach, so why would he want to release them, if he can't stand the way they look!?!?!?

It's over! Accept it, or stick to your VHs, Laser disc or DVD.

It makes perfect sense. Just read my posts above.

He is a member of the Film Foundation, because he doesn't want any darn studio executives tinker with the classics, like turning them into a 3-D theme park ride, coloring them, or something like that, but every creator has the right to tinker with HIS OWN movies for crying out loud!!

Why is that so hard to understand for some of you???

Again, they are HIS movies, so even if he is a member of the Film Foundation, he has EVERY RIGHT to improve HIS movies, because HE created them, they are his vision, his composition, his work, his legacy.

This is the very last time I respond to such a post. Some people simply cannot be helped!

About the Star Wars fangirls topic yeah my sister is almost a huge a fan as me, she is only 22 though so she missed the original release, well ok so did I honestly I am only 27, but I had the toys and watched them on TV and VHS and the re-release but anyways to that point yes there are some girls who are as obssessive as us guys, my sister is of the opposite as most people though not only does she only consider the SE the proper version, its the first she saw, she also likes the prequels alittle bit better than the originals.

And yeah I take the view of honestly the changes are so insignificant and most in fact DO make the movies better I am still completely baffled why so many people rant and rave how they can't stand the minor changes in the SE. But to be fair I am a big enough fan I would enjoy the Theatrical release if given to me because i have them already on VHS, LaserDisc and DVD. But I am a collector I want them all to HAVE THEM all not because one version is better. Honestly how hard is it to just take a deep breath, watch the movie and HAVE FUN without thinking too damn much about what was changed and what wasn't.

The prequels I can sorta understand why some people might not like them as much but I have no clue why anyone could honestly hate them they kick ass they are true Star Wars through and through, I went to each one multiple times in theaters, watched everyone on DVD more times than I can count.

When this comes out on Blu Ray, assuming I have a better job by then or I have enough notice to save up and pre-order I will buy and watch them on day one.

That's too bad. I understand why he thinks the SEs are superior, but the first of the films in particular is historically significant and it would be nice to see it preserved in HD.

I have those DVDs, but I guess I'll have to keep them if I want to re-watch the original versions, even though they're not optimized for 16:9 screens and the windowboxing is annoying.

Yes, they were taken from the SD masters used for the LD releases, which is why I wondered if the original negatives simply no longer existed.

The first film in the OT is a historically significant film, and one could extend that to the entire OT. It would simply be nice to be able to see them in their original form on Blu-ray. Those effects may make him sick to his stomach now, but they were revolutionary in their day.

With the exception of the Han/Greedo scene, I agree.

I am quite sure they are still around, I doubt they would be toss out but they must look horrible and would probably need a lot of work to be release on blu-ray. If this was anything else but Star Wars I would hope that some independant company would come along and take a chance on them (would probably cost them a bundle to fix them) and then release them. But since it's Star Wars it won't happen. Star Wars is Lucas and he won't let go of his toys for all the unobtanium. in the universe

As much as I do enjoy the Special Edition, I do agree this scene is the one that make's the most changes. It does alter the character of Han. It's not enough for me to make me hate Lucas like some do but it's one scene I wish he could have yes enhance but leave with Han shooting first from under the table. He's a rogue and he would have no problem doing so when a guy as a blaster poiting at him.

I'm more concerned about the AQ than the PQ on this one:

The "A New Hope" DVD had a serious audio fault. The music tracks in the surround channels are reversed, e.g. the violins are front left but right back, the brass is front right but left back, etc.

This doesn't affect the sound effects track, just the music.

At the time Lucasfilm famously denied this was a problem, clearly because they didn't want the hassle of a re-press.

If they remix the sound again for these HD versions - and I'm assuming they will - they'd better get it right this time!!!

I wonder which "version" of the originl trilogy will be included in this set.

There's the originals from the 1970's onwards, the speeial editions from 1997 and the remastered editions from 2004.

Furthermore, I hope this set includes ALL the extras from the previous DVDs that were released over the last few years.

Not really tempted to double dip though since I had David Prowse (Vader), Peter Mayhew (Chewie) and Kenny Baker (Artoo) sign my original trilogy boxset last year.

OK... simple. Star Wars used to be remembered as setting a new standard to the motion picture industry. As a child the effects were bar none the COOLEST THING EVER! Sure NOW the effects are quite dated, but that is what makes it a classic. You don't see CGI thrown into the classic King Kong, or the original Clash of the Titans. Could you imagine the response if such classics were "fixed" and trashed the originals?

I don't mind Georgie boy fondling his own creation until it is no longer recognizable at to what it was... but PLEASE offer the classics that we grew up with!

I'd also like to have the choice whether to watch the original effects or the re-done effects. The Star Trek TOS boxsets come to mind: both versions on a single disc with seamless branching. I think that would be the best way to offer Star Wars on BD to fans.

Thumbs up

We better get remastered old films before hitting Blu-ray. The newer ones are already up to par. I hope we atleast get a 4/5 on PQ from films 1-3 and perfect 5/5 on the newer ones.

We are over a year off .....no need to stress over this yet..

The theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy are not going to be on this set. People really need to get use to that fact.

I could be horribly wrong but I just don't see Lucas changing his mind on this. This set will include the definitive versions of each film.

He'll probably only revisit these films in 3-D in the future. I don't know what else he's going to do with these films on home video after Blu Ray. There's really no point to mess with them anymore after Blu Ray....
