Even though I'm not a fan of this particular film, there are definitely some scenes I would love to see in HD... and yes, because the old DVD is absolutely atrocious.

Agreed that DVD release of TPM was so bad too much video nose in the transfer and it looked awful. It wasn't that way when the film came out in theaters back in 1999 and the blu-ray release hopefully we be so much better than the dvd release it will be night and day with TPM and it will be HD.

Artifacting, the picture was soft, edge enhancement... yeah. It was a train wreck.

Yeah that one was pretty bad, the video noise is really noticeable when you put in a Blu ray player in my opinion. However, I loved the sound, during the lightsaber fight it always shook my house I loved it

The audio on the Laserdisc Phantom Menace cleans the floor with the DVD copy.

Yeah, it just doesn't look 'Star Wars' though. Look at Anakin's face; he looks like a Hummel figurine . I think that's what kills it for me. Had he looked like Jake Lloyd, then it would have been better.

BTW, these comments will not keep me from buying this set .

Lucas held a massive junket at Skywalker Ranch to promote the Phantom Menace DVD, and so DVD critics from IGN, Home Theater Forum, DVDFile etc. were wined and dined and they all came back raving their heads off about the DVD. I saw it, and thought it looked like the master used for the VHS and Laserdisc versions several months prior. Sort of amusing to see the disc trashed with such frequency these days, and vindicating.

Whilst I think the image itself is really good (apart from the fact that Luke really is portrayed as a ghost..), it's just that it is missing detail.

The boxsets are movieshots and then stylized, but still have facial detail etc. On the Complete Saga, it looks like it is all drawn and as such it doesn't work as good imo. Hopefully this makes sense

I can't believe they didn't ask Drew Struzan to draw something amazing for The Complete Saga box, what were they thinking doing this... thing?

Also disk arts looks awful, they should use Struzan's posters, they're gorgeous and iconic:

I said it before and I'll keep saying it: the artwork is so bad, it's unbelievable how it was approved. And by "bad" I mean, the poor effort that was put into it.
I wanted to see some space on the main cover! (it is STAR wars, right...?)
I wanted to an image from the movies on the DVDs (Darth Maul on I, clones on II, yellow-eyed Anakin on III, for example)

Red face

Isn't Phantom Menace an early DVD?

I can't remember the DVD release date but it looks about as good as the OT on DVD but anamorphic. It is dreadfully bad, I think the gap between the VHS and the DVD in quality is not as much as it should be, it is that bad.

I think the VHS actually sounds better!

On a different note - the FSK that rates movies here in germany has tested some more material from the upcoming Blu-Ray Set:
Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope (Blu Ray Version) (New Edition) 125 Minutes (24 fps)
Star Wars Episode II - Attack Of The Clones (Blu Ray Version) 142 Minutes (24 fps)

Movies that are released again on a new medium are only reviewed by the FSK if they are indeed altered versions or different cuts. LotR for example has not been reviewed again for it's Blu-Ray outing...

Furthermore on Disc 7 there is something called "Boba Fett: First Look" (8:39 Minutes)
That's the Boba Fett-Cartoon from the Holiday-Special I think...
Was the info that General Grievous is going to be introduced in AOTC official or just a rumor. That would explain the new required rating, wouldn't it?

I am VERY curious to see what's new in ANH!

Sounds exciting.

Thanks for the info.

Do you always buy U.S. BDs?

I do, and that's why I got myself the Oppo BDP-83SE, and it has never let me down.

Shame that the one for Sith is so poor though. Struzan complained that his original composition was changed, which is fair enough, but even his likenesses are strangely angular and awkward. I think even he'd had enough with Star Wars at that point.

I love it too. The mood and the facial impressions are great. The studio just messed with Struzans layout a bit, the size and position of Vader in the background was changed a lot.

I really think the artwork is alright, not perfect, but certainly not worth rampaging about. The transfers and the movies themselves are what I'm after in this release, whereas the artwork ranks somewhat lower in terms of importance, however, my opinion of the artwork is that they're not bad at all.

Sorry if this was asked before, will all the bonus features from the DVDs be carried over to the blus? Should I keep my DVDs or can safely sell them away?
