Default Vader's Lightsaber

Was it ever explained why Vader's lightsaber color was changed from red to pink?

I think the overall color change to the movie as a whole makes it appear pink.

That WOULD be a pity indeed, but not the end of the world to me.

If anything, I would say that my expectations (and probably those of many fans to tend to be a bit pessimistic towards Lucas's decisions these days) have fairly realistic expectations. As much as many of us want the UOT released at some point, I think at this point most of us just want this release of these versions of the films to be the best that they can reasonably and realistically be. And that can be achieved by simply going back and doing new, proper transfers. I HOPE that is what happened, but all information so far is pointing towards the opposite.

With all due respect (and I'm really not trying to start a 'fight' here, I'm just pointing out a genuine observation of the matter at hand), it honestly seems, for the most part, to be the people who praise Lucas no matter what he does who expect this to be the single greatest Blu-Ray release of all time. It may sell well because it's Star Wars (heck... they could slap a Star Wars label on a piece of dog poo and it would sell), but it won't necessarily mean that from a PQ and AQ standpoint that this release will surpass all or even most other high-profile Blu-Ray releases.

At least those of us expecting the transfers for the OT to not be much improved over the DVD transfers can either have our expectations met, or surpassed if a new transfer is done for this. We aren't putting this release on an unrealistic pedestal like so many others are.
If this release doesn't play all the bells and whistles, I will definitely be very disappointed in Lucas, as there is no excuse, and it would be so easy to fix those minor things for him.
I don't want to lose hope just yet, as we haven't actually seen the movies on BD yet, but Adywan's discovery of the old error, that I never noticed on the DVD, and probably last a second at most, is still in the movie of the BD version, has dampened my expectations considerably.

I simply don't understand why Lucas wouldn't have gone all the way with this release. THIS IS THE TIME TO GET THEM RIGHT!

At least they are going to have 1080p transfers to work with if Lucas can't get them right.

New ones? BD exclusive ones? Where? What?....

Just because a display at Comic-Com or a trailer uses the old elements is no reason to firmly believe that is exactly what we're getting.

I'm tossing this out as a helpful expression of hope, rather then throwing in the towel altogether...because if the blu-ray set is the old transfer, I'm not buying, and will start looking into trying to purchase a new laserdisc player.
That'd be great, but apparently they were showing BD clips, so ....

He knows exactly what the fans want but will never give it to us as long as we keep parting with our hard earned cash.
I have bought the Star Wars movies on every format available at the time but enough is enough, these films are starting to become unrecognisable to the ones i adored growing up as a child and i refuse to line his pockets anymore in the hope that the next imminent release will be the versions we all want.
No amount of whining on the numerous forums dedicated to Star Wars ever seem to do any good so stop moaning and stand your ground and refuse to purchase another mediocre release from George 'the butcher' Lucas.
So you have already seen THE COMPLETE SAGA on Blu-ray?

At least wait until you actually read some professional reviews, or see them with your own eyes. How about that?

Unrecognizable?

As it seems now, everything is same old.

Yoda from AOTC is still the old Yoda model.

The errors and terribly outdated VFX shots are still there, so perhaps you should think before you post nothing but negativity!?

The dark side has clouded your vision.

Now in these past 7 years the problems have become widely known and reported so the excuse can't be that they were unaware of them. They did admit that it was a bit rushed for the DVDs but come on, they have had 7 years to sort this situation out.

The only movie that is in any way close to how they originally looked is ROTJ. ESB is the worse quality out of the three. Not only did they crush the blacks but they brightened the image so much it destroyed any detail in brighter areas. It's a complete mess. Here are just a few examples showing how the Special editions originally looked vs the 2004 transfer (1997 Special editions on the left - 2004 versions on the right):

Now can these people that are always saying that anyone that is complaining are just "haters" and that there is nothing wrong with the 2004 transfers really say that these versions are the best the original trilogy has ever looked and that there is nothing wrong with them?

The footage they used was from the actual Blu-Rays edited to look like you are watching it on a display in the war room on Yavin. But the footage they used was definitely what will be on the Blu-Rays as this was supposed to show off just how good the Blu-Rays look. They wouldn't use the old 2004 transfer if that isn't what is on the discs
I just checked the shot of TESB on the DVD copy I have, and found it. It lasts like one second at most. Hardly worth committing suicide over me thinks.

If you tell me the exact time of those shots, I will look them up just for the sake of it.

I, probably more than most of you, want them to be super updated, but I will be happy if I get to see TPM in a glorious transfer, and AOTC and especially ROTS should look picture perfect, and sound phenomenal on BD.

I have seen the OT so many times, I can wait for the final 3-D versions on BD, if that's ever going to happen, and if not, the world still keeps spinning, but I am with you, I think it would be really darn lazy and lame of Lucas to have used the old transfers, and not fixed all those small errors.

Look at these comparisons i've made between the 2004 DVD (TOP) and the screenshot from the new Star Wars web page (BOTTOM)

Very different images. The screenshot from the website - even though both images are low-res - actually has a grain structure and the image looks far more natural as it is brighter.

This gives me hope!

May the force be with us!

Either way, they are going to look the best ever, the only question is how MUCH better than the DVDs they are going to look....

First time I've seen those comparison screenshots above. I'm hoping those are the worst examples of the 2004 transfers, because those are pretty awful

Look the blu-ray box set has not even come out and some fans are all complaining about the picture quallity base on some youtube videos and screen captures from the offical site. Wait until the set comes out September 16th and then judge for yourself how the picture quallity will look like. Don't base it off of a youtube video and a screen capture.

I wouldn't get too hopeful. It looks like they just upped the gamma on the image. Here's a shot from the 2004 HDTV version with only the gamma increased:

Pretty much the same. there are some tell tale signs in the darker areas that point to a simple gamma increase. View it full size and the grain structure is all there

They're either holding back actual footage because it's the old 2004 transfer, and trying to avoid fan backlash, or because it's gorgeously stunning.

Well -- why are you trying to? Either you know for certain, or you don't. I believe you, don't get me wrong, but I'm an eternal optimist and will hope 2011 won't go out as the most depressing year in Blu-Ray history (Fantasia 2-disc debacle, LOTR Green Tint Debacle, Star Wars using botched 7-year-old transfers debacle...and yeah. I know Fantasia 2-disc streeted three weeks before 2011...the misery carried over...).

It's probably the former. What we've seen of the new master for Phantom Menace looks absolutely gorgeous. It's a shame that same quality wasn't applied toward the OT.

Just got off the phone with good old George. He started laughing immediately when I mentioned the blu-rays. He's playing with us, he deliberately show the old 2004 transfer at the Comic Con to see if any of us could catch the split-second glitch at the bottom of the TIE fighters shot, apparently we did. The lightsaber shot on the Star Wars blu-ray website was part of this joke as well. In couple of weeks before release date he will put out screenshots of the new transfer and give us a new hope.
[Show spoiler]

Seriously though, if it is the old transfer, maybe they digitally fixed the coloring and sound issue, etc? The TIE fighters shot glitch could be insignificant or overlooked, I mean I never knew about it until Adywan showed it a few pages back. I've seen the DVD so many times I never noticed it. I'm gonna watch A New Hope again today and try look for it, still doubt to notice it though as I would be too deep into the movie, it is one of my favorite movies ever.

I don't know...just trying to hold out hope. The year started with Fantasia receiving a lackluster two-disc set, then we had the LOTR Extended Edition debacle, and if you're right, now we get another kick in the babymakers with Lucas using the infamous transfers from 2004 for the new Blu-Rays.

Still holding out hope....
I'm with you.

For people who just want Star Wars on blu-ray, hey, go for it. Hope you sincerely enjoy it.

For people who want Star Wars as it is truly meant to be seen, sans darkened images, redone visual effects, and other modifications, don't get your hopes up and if the 2004 transfers are confirmed avoid this release and speak with your wallet.
