I've never made a film, and then tweaked it over and over, so I don't know how all of this really works.
Anything's possible, but it depends on what the man on top thinks needs fixing.

The 2004 transfers had two primary problems: gamma and color timing. Screenshots from the website suggest color timing issues remain (pink lightsaber) while the gamma has increased.

My whole stance on this is that there is some evidence (screenshots, the glitch from adywan, etc.) to believe these blu-rays are sourced from the 2004 transfers. Lucas always talks about it being too costly to restore older prints as well. If you look at his history he has a patten of being stubborn and not fulfilling the fans' reasonable wishes. The original prints were remastered for the Special Editions - no reason that can't be done again (unless they were lost or burned). Money and time are not issues.

However, nothing is truly official until reviewers or customers have the discs in hand themselves, or Fox releases additional details. Since they haven't released details about the transfer, other than saying it presents Star Wars in the best picture and all that, that makes me skeptical, but that's just me.

But, I cannot fathom how anybody can be more than cautiously optimistic that the issues from 2004 will not be there and that the picture quality will be the best it can an should be.

There's evidence for the discs being underwhelming and derived from the 2004 transfers, with partial adjustments, based on previously discussed expectations of PQ.

There's no evidence that these discs present all-new corrected transfers, other than empty, vague press releases.

In all reality, most of Lucas' movies have not been stellar BD/DVD releases as compared to say Spielberg.

THX and American Graffiti on Blu-ray are not perfect as they have too much EE and there is some filtering, and some of the Star Wars DVDs were far from perfect, of course.

Clearly, they are using the same transfers from 2004 on the BD for the original trilogy. They still will look pretty good based on the fact the HD broadcasts are very solid; however, they will not look as good as they could. Expect new transfers down the road especially with the 3D stuff.

He won't pay for them with my money. And if these are seven-year-old faulty transfers, DVD/Blu-Ray journalists need to do their jobs and call him on it. For once. Seriously, that company needs to feel some blowback if they pull that stunt again. We feel it, it's time they felt it.

I can't help, but feel that these problems that are still present from the 2004 transfers would warrant a recall were it not Star Wars. Maybe thats what we should all do. Demand a recall. Blu-ray seems to have put the consumer somewhat more in control, because the people buying Blu-ray expect only the best. What with the audio being swapped in ANH, the video glitch in the Battle of Yavin, and various other problems I think it warrants us demanding a recall and making Lucas fix these problems. Don't confuse this with me wanting the additions changed. I am fine with that stuff. Its the video problems and audio problems I cant stand. I doubt it will happen, but it would be nice if for once Lucasfilm had to do things right. Hopefully, the journalists and reviewers will make a point of pointing out the problems and call him on it.

Also, all the 2004 transfers really need are colour enhancement, I've never really noticed any sloppy effects, just sometimes the colours look really off (perhaps some effects could have done better, but their annoyance is negligable compared to that of the colour issues). If they release only the special editions, but include all of the original footage in the form of deleted scenes, it would be perfect
If Star Trek (TOS) can do a seemless branching remaster + original, then so can Star Wars. For shame Lucas, for shame.

Yes; at least we could see the original Jabba palace band sequence, the original Ewok song and Han shooting first.

I think if these are the same transfers than the 2004 release for the OT all the fans must boycott the release to force Lucas to react or make a petition or something to get the things move!

Yeah, that will totally happen. Reality, you will buy whatever SW they put out, and you will like it. And even if you personally don't, 99% of everyone else will, and a good chunk of those twice.

If this turns out to be true, then the LOTR green-tea party will be nothing compared to what's coming...

I agree with you. If these are indeed lazy transfers, then I would certainly be in, but right now it's still speculation, so I will wait and see.

The original Jabba song was god awful, and the Ewok song was even worse. I am super happy that he got rid of those horrendously embarrassing scenes, and replaced them with fun and awesome ones.

I really can't believe people honestly liked those.
I bet it's because of their childhood memories.

Lucas does have a point though, because no matter how many people cry "I will NOT be buying this!!!!!" since the release was ever speculated, you just know they'll end up doing so anyway.

Not if everyone sticks to their guns. I have been a life-long fan of these movies, but I am at the point that if these BDs aren't up to par, then I'm ready to push these so far down my wish list that I won't buy them until the are available from Big Lot's (closeout store). I'm just fed up with subpar BD releases in general, not just Star Wars.

I think if we ALL decided not to buy this it wouldn't even matter. The people who go to this website are a tiny fraction of the people who buy movies. Casual movie watchers will buy this up for sure, it doesn't really matter what we do.

Iīm not trying to excuse a potential lazy transfer. I will be let down like most of you but the shots on the official site look pretty good donīt they. Iīm still hoping for more enhancements and improved effects and I will be disappointed if nothing has been done with all the time on their hands. But the fact that they used scans from 2004 doesnīt mean the movies are not going to look good. I think thereīs nothing wrong with the actual scans (besides the Yavin battle error Adywan pointed out, maybe) but with the contrast and the colors... the black crush has been fixed for instant.

Hereīs a comparison between TE DVD, SE DVD and BD for shits and giggles:

Theatrical DVD:

2004 DVD:

Thank you for sharing. Pretty cool pictures. I'll wait for reviews, but it's looking to be a halfway decent set.

Not so much as like, but nice to have. Just like the deleted scenes we are getting. Besides, a lot of the 'older' people who saw the OT in the theaters remember it that way so for some it's hard to adjust . I do like the newer Ewok ending and the added planets celebrating. I don't mind the changes in the SEs that much, but it's nice to see the OT as it was too.
