Anybody here besides Peter-THX and I that remember this re-boot of the opening shot from Star Wars?

It's going to look great, I wouldn't worry too much about it. One has to imagine that the movies will receive the best possible treatment. Even if the transfers come from the 2004 sources, any problems from the dvds should hopefully be corrected for this release.

That said, I agree that the bread and butter of the set is in the special features. Can't wait for the deleted scenes and new documentaries!

I agree.

I'll admit that more than likely I will buy this set regardless as it will still be a big step up from the existing DVDs and I am interested in the extra features.

But having said that, I do want it to be a new, proper transfer (though that's not looking to be likely), and if it hypothetically had to come at the expense of the extras, so be it.

While one would imagine the movies to receive the best possible treatment, one would also have imagined the 2004 DVDs to receive the best possible treatment and look how that turned out. Some of the problems in the 04 masters are so glaringly obvious, it can't help but shake my confidence in Lucasfilm's quality control. Combine that with the fact that every official promotion for the Blu Rays fails to shed any light on the transfers and color me worried. I have a bad feeling about this.

Well of course they should HOPEFULLY be corrected. But will they be? I'd love some official word that for example the lightsabers don't look like they were painted in crayon (which showed up for the first time in '04) and that the music theme when the X-Wings dive during the Death Star attack isn't on mute, etc.

That's because they ARE the real value. I would pay $200 for those deleted scenes alone. That's all I care about: the archival footage. He can keep the films.

Lucasfilm has said that the blu-ray release will be the definitive version of the films. I think that's worth something. The lack of promotion for the transfer itself I think is a result of most people assuming Star Wars on blu-ray will look the absolute best it can, plus the attention to the special features. Although the 2004 DVD set didn't work out, this time I think we can be more confident since they've had a couple years to fix any issues.

See above - just have to have faith, my friend. The promo footage and sample shots on the official website raise some concern, but they don't represent the true product. Even the glitch that adywan found doesn't tell us much - maybe it's the same source, but the colors and effects should be corrected.

I think 3rd time's a charm! (First in 1997, 2nd in 2004.)

Well flame me if you want, but I am looking forward to this release. I hope the transfers are top notch of course, but I am not worried so much about it.

Cheers!

From what you can tell by that the footage of the Blu-Ray looks amazing again... really no reason to complain by now.

All the footage they keep showing in these videos look great. I'm actually astonished how good some of it looks.

As would I, but I want 45 new deleted scenes not 20. If they are counting the deleted scenes we already have then that means half those 45 we have already seen. That doesn't excite me as much.

I think the PQ is going to be good enough to satisfy 90-95% of the people that buy this box set. It's the other 5-10% on sites like this one, HTF, AVS, etc. that are going to have full on hissy fits if every single thing isn't perfect. I have to admit that if I put in ESB and Vader still has a pink lightsaber I'll probably have an aneurysm.

Agree with everyone that the footage in the video earmullet posted looks pretty solid. I also liked hearing the fan testimonials.

The kid at 0:58 who said his favorite flick was AOTC reminded me that we should avoid cynicism and see these movies through our own young perspectives. Together they tell a great story and any flaws or nitpicks about individual movies dissipate when you put everything together.

Looking forward to some official 1080p screenshots or footage soon!

I just watched the video. Cool video, by the way. It was 360p. What part of the video shows anything that is representative of the video quality for the Blu-ray? You couldn't be referring to the ANH or ESB footage playing in the background since a 360p video can't give us any indication of video quality from a Blu-ray disc supposedly playing in the background.

What do you mean? I wasn't aware of anything having been definitively established about the A/V quality of this release. So, how can we say whether it's good or bad until it's actually reviewed by a trusted, knowledgeable source? Since we cannot, you really can't say there is nothing to complain about by now. Nothing has been settled or established, for that matter. Nor can anyone say there is truly anything to complain about yet since it hasn't made it into anyone's hands. It's too early to know where the A/V quality will fall, good or bad. It's impossible to praise or complain at this point.

The same encoding error from the 2004 transfer and the overly bright screenshot from ROTJ concerns me, but there is certainly no way to pass judgment on this set, good or bad, before it falls into someone's hands for review.
